RESEARCH MEDICAL
UNIVERSITY
CLASS OF 2013

Dear Graduates!
Doctor- they are conditions of the soul. Very soon hospitals in Malaysia and many other countries wil be
represented by graduates of the Rusian National Research Medical University, one of the oldest universities
of medical institutions of Rusia. It dates back to 1906, when it was part of women's higher rates Faculties
Faculty of Medicine that had just opened. Today the university has seven Faculties , about 10,000 students
from many federal entities of the Rusian Federation and foreign countries. The medical profesion requires
you to love people, to distance yourself from yourself, from the surounding environment. A doctor must treat
al his patients equaly, regardles of their political or economic status. He shouldn’t see his patient as a
political leader, a source of powerful influence, whether he’s rich or poor, but as a person who is in need of
care and compasion. Without a good relationship between a doctor and his patient, the succes of treatment
is very doubtful. We hope that the six years of training has imparted you these qualities.
Good luck dear graduates. We wish you health, prosperity, and al the best! Let the luck accompany you.
Remember your teachers. Share your knowledge and skils with coleagues. Do not stop there, replenish the
store of knowledge. Progres ahead in medical science for the sake of humanity.
Sincerely,
Dean of Foreign Department,
Rusian National Research Medical University
Dear readers,
PHEW! What an amazing 6 years it has been! From the year 2007, we, the graduating batch of 2013 RNRMU
(previously known as RSMU) have come a long way, and evolved together, as steadfast individuals. Today, as I
look at my felow batch mates, I can’t help but marvel at how the past 6 years have changed and moulded them.
From young, free things we have metamorphosed into mature young adults, ready to take on the world. In this
time, commitments and responsibilities may have not popped up yet for most. Instead we were constantly
looking into a huge looking glas of dreams and aspirations. Wel, now the time has arived for us to act on it,
and work towards our goals.
While varsity life is always said to be rosiest phase of one’s life, let me tel you that it wasn’t a walk in the park al
the time. Ask anyone of us, and we’d tel you that that living in Rusia wasn’t just chalenging, but also an eye
opener. It is here that we learnt life lesons, survival skils and other virtues. We came here as lone individuals;
formed a litle family of our own, and now we’re leaving as a team of spirited doctors. Forgive the melodrama
folks, but life here has a way of bringing out the tragedy queen deep within you.
When the idea of a yearbook first cropped up a year ago, I was realy excited. To me, this was a perfect
opportunity for us to document al our finest memories of Moscow, a momento to be cherished years later, if
you wil. More than that, I see our yearbook as a symbol; a symbol of benevolence, undivided loyalty to felow
batch mates, and comradery. This book symbolizes our 6 years of hard work and perseverance, and most
importantly, strong bonds of friendship that I hope wil go on for years.
This yearbook wouldn’t have been posible without my fantastic team, course. I would like to thank my
wonderful team of writers, who have marked these pages with their wit and humour. As we take a journey
through these pages, we wil walk down memory lane through their eyes.
A good picture can speak a thousand words. I would like to thank my talented team of photographers who
have coloured this yearbook with beautiful snapshots.
Last but not the least, I’d like to thank my two editors, who have worked realy hard to tweak and perfect this
yearbook.
SoSo here we are, felow comrades, at the end of one journey and the start of another. I wish you al the very best
in life. Keep the fire of determination burning within you, for our paths are not laced with prety ribbons and
candies. I hope succes folows you in every decision you make.
Спасибо Большой !
Yours truly,
Editor In Chief,
Vahini Krishnan

Autumn
the year’s last, loveliest smile...
The fall of August – October is known in Moscow as the Golden Autumn. Take a slow walk
on the streets and you can see sheaths of bright yellow leaves lain. Early autumn is an absolutely
fantastic season here. Sunny days are not rare and just amazingly beautiful. That is, till the downpour
starts. Oh boy, what a downpour it is! We wake up to the soft trickling of water against our
window panes and go to sleep with tranquil sound of water dripping from the trees, like a perfect
lullaby.
So I must say this part of the year can be as sweet as meat to a person as it is poison to
another. First of all, it symbolizes the start of a new academic year, so those enthusiastic students
would be chirping away, making plans for the semester, most of which includes new resolutions.
“Oh this year im going to study harder la…gonna make the most of my free time on books” or “this
year im going to stop watching so many tv shows and start working out” or even “this year im going
to focus on saving money for euro tour”…. Of course, whether or not these hearty resolutions come
true is totally another story.
I of course can relate to the second group of people who see autumn as the end to a wonderful
holiday. 2 months of pure bliss at home, surrounded by loved ones and aroma of home cooked
food…..and we’re back to fending for ourselves by binging on whatever looks edible…how is that
not depressing, people?? A new year also means tougher subjects, more challenging “cycles” for
those in 5th and 6th years, and months of anticipation before we can finally head to “Alamin Travels”
and book tickets to go home again. Being a 6th year in the fall of 2012, we had a new resolution
however – to start preparing for the new phase of our lives: Housemanship. Jeez, even the word
leaves us cringing in fear.
To answer the call of autumn would mean to get the jackets come out of the closet. For the
most part, we Malaysians would consider anything more than a sweater as too many layers
( I know, tropical regions and all) but the regular gusts of cold winds might change all of that.
I’d understand why many don’t fancy the autumn season – they don’t look forward to what comes
after. The cold gale and the sea of golden leaves just remind them of the gruelling hard winter that
follows, like the calm before a storm.
Here a famous quote by Stanley Horowitz comes to mind, ”Winter is an etching, spring a watercolour,
summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.”

Interbatch
games
" TOGETHER WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL "
The title sums it all up. Interbatch is an annual sports tournament between 1st years to 6th years.
Interbatch, kicked off in 2008, when the graduating class of 2013, (yes, our very own batch
a.k.a Broccoli) was still in 2nd year.
The main idea of interbatch -firstly to bring all the students together as a batch and eventually
as a comrade of the university, Russian National Research Medical University (formerly known
as Russian State Medical University) and also to find new talents for the Intervarsity games.
“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.”
-Michael Jordan-
Well, as the saying goes, Interbatch as a whole is pure team work. Each batch obviously has
different number of students. So, each and every one of us play an important role.
Every year, we have 5 games, futsal ( male & female ), basketball ( male & female ), volleyball
( male & female ), handball ( male & female ) and netball( male & female ).
Yes, netball for male. And hereby, we are truly proud to say that Broccolians have the best male
netballers!
Additionally, we are also evaluated based on attendance of each batch (another feather in
the cap for us Broccolians), and as well as march past.
This is a very important aspect because just like any other varsity tournaments, each batch will be
evaluated by points system. Well, obviously that means the more gold in your pocket, the better
your chances of sitting at the top of the list. And at the end, as an overall wrap, march past and
attendance points will be added to the list as well. Here, with proudness I say that Broccolians are
always united to win hands down for attendance and march past! It feels like such a great honor
when other batches consider Broccoli as their toughest enemy.
Well, Broccoli….. wondering what is actually Broccoli? Haha, as what you are thinking, yes, we the
graduating class of 2013 call ourselves Broccoli. Why? Well, we distinguish each batch in participating
events by colour code. This colour will remain in each and every interbatch till we graduate.
So, the graduating class of 2013 goes with green! So thinking about what symbolizes green, we
came up with Broccoli (should I just call it king of all vegetables! Haha! ) So, that is how we came
up with the name Broccoli as our logo. Not only we have a Broccoli flag, but also we have our very
own jumper with a small Broccoli logo :)
As I mentioned earlier, Interbatch started in 2008. The pioneer champion was…. WAIT FOR
IT…… who else if it is not our dearest Broccoli, our very own batch! The most memorable Interbatch
for each and every Broccolians till date.
And as for 2009, we decided to take a small rest to let that particular year's graduating batch
taste the victory. 2010, again, we roared and soared high up again to get back what belongs to us!
Again, second victory for the Broccolians! Double thumbs up! Since things were going alternate
ways, the year 2011, graduating class of 2015 took over the trophy.
We are still happy that the Interbatch trophy carries our name twice in 4 years.
Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”
― Helen Keller
Broccolians, as we always known for our unity and teamwork, nothing would have happened if not
for us. Even the smallest thing we have done, somehow, somewhere, it helped us each step going
up the ladder towards victory.

Winter
Baby it’s cold outside!
Brrrrrr! Yes it’s spine tingling cold.If you ask a foreigner what season is associated with
Russia then he’ll more likely answer winter. And that is explainable. In Russia it’s the coldest part of
the year.
By the way, in spite of such bone breaking chills that the winter brings, it’s usual for Russians to
congratulate each other with the first snow. People are pleased with the first snow. Usually it falls in
November.
Locals wear warm clothes. First there are the jackets. Then caps, scarves and gloves are
added on. Russians wear fur coats in strong colds. ‘Valenoks’ were worn to warm in the past. ‘Valenoks’
are special shoes. They are now also made in some other countries.
Winter for children is always like a holiday. It gives them an opportunity to play in the snow. Besides,
if temperature falls lower than 30 degrees below zero, then lessons at school are cancelled. Frankly
speaking, this fact usually pleases children very much. They get an extra day off. Who wouldn’t
want that? Time to let loose and go bonkers. Besides, it doesn’t worry them to go for a walk on the
street with friends..
In fact, not only children but also adults enjoy having fun in winter. There’s an opportunity to
go in for different sports. This time of the year the parks are full of people. Lots of them go skiing.
You’ll also find a lot of opened and closed ice skating rinks. Here you can meet those who stand on
the ice skates for the first time and also those who skate quite well and can even do some tricks.
And all that of course is accompanied with music. That makes ice skating even more pleasant.
As one long treacherous yet ever gorgeous winter marks its end and flowers of spring starts to blossom,
we are constantly reminded that another year shall come, and so does The Hard Winter.
As the great John Steinback once said “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of
winter to give it sweetness?”

Deepavali
Being thousands of miles away from home , Deepavali is always the time when we Indians
get homesick the most. Memories of waking up to the smell of Amma’s cooking, the shopping spree
and new clothes that follow, and of course the money that we get from those older than us! This
year, although we didn’t get to enjoy all of those things, Deepavali held as much meaning celebrating
it with our batch mates.
We managed to organize a get- together and chose the second weekend after the actual
date which fell on the 13th of November 2012. We knew that cooking for the whole batch meant a
lot of food and drinks needed to be prepared and so decided on Chicken Varuval, Chicken Kurma,
Mutton Peratal and vegetables .
The day before the event, the men were given the task of buying and prepping the ingredients.
They however proved the wise old saying of “boys will always be boys” right by letting the fun
begin but also getting the tasks done just in time for dawn. The cooking was done by the girls, who
mostly worked in pairs so that the job would be done relatively fast and efficiently, allowing just
enough time for everyone to get dressed to the nines.
The dressed code was Indian traditional thus we saw the girls donned in Sarees, Punjabi suits and
wearing “Pottu’s” while the boys were in Jippas. It was a rather stunning sight to see even the
Chinese and Malays dressed to impress. Some looked absolutely stunning in sarees although it
being their very first time being draped it in.
After stuffing ourselves with glorious food and taking as many photographs as our cameras
and phone memory cards could allow us to, we then turned the music up and danced the night
away. The atmosphere that night was indescribable with everyone laughing, singing along, dancing
and having so much fun.
Although we have celebrated this festival of lights every year for the past 5 to 6 years in the
very same building, this year however was different because it gave us a chance to renew our bond
and friendship with each other as one, as a family, despite our different beliefs and culture.
All in all, Deepavali certainly lived up to its name this year filling our hearts with bliss, our tummies
with food and our minds with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Winter Holidays
Who could forget the last days of the winter semester: everybody swamped with exams, cooped up in
rooms because the weather outside is too dreadful for anything else; long dark winter nights with cups of
steaming coffee or hot chocolate, trying our absolute best to revise and cramp as much of our textbooks as
we can into our minds. Everything, of course, comes to an end; and for us, the end of the winter exams signal
the start of a joyous time indeed: the winter holidays!
For many, this is the time to finally let down their hair, kick up their feet and relax. With 2 weeks of
winter vacation being too long to remain cooped up in the hostel, and yet too short to embark on the 12-hour
flight back to Malaysia, many instead opt to go on winter trips in Europe or Egypt, which are nearby and
considerably cheaper in winter.
A winter trip is definitely different for many people studying in Russia. For those who are more well-todo,
it could mean a lavish trip staying in lovely hotels, with exotic meals and extravagant shopping. For those
of us who are less endowed or simply wish to be economical, which is most of the students here, a trip around
Europe usually means living in youth hostels and carrying big backpacks, a small sacrifice when it means
seeing famous sights and going to places most of us have only read of or watched on the screen growing up.
Indeed, this experience of roughing it out and interacting with strangers in hostels who become lifelong friends
is such a lovely one, so much so that many swear on “backpacking” as their preferred form of travel.
Watching the sun set over the Eiffel tower of Paris or the lovely buildings in Santorini, swimming in the
warm seas of Alexandra in Egypt or skiing down the Swiss alps, shopping in the famous boutiques in Paris or
Milan or walking along the streets of ancient Rome, enjoying wine in the many wineries in Europe or having a
pint in Scotland; a winter vacation most certainly delivers a healthy dose of rest and culture to the many
students studying here, as well as a well earned respite from the harsh winters of Russia. Winter trips will most
certainly live on in many the hearts of fellow students in Russia, as well as on their Facebook and Instagram
pages.

Spring
The moment when the snow has melted and the grass grows green again, the time when trees start
budding full of fresh tiny leaves, flowers start popping out of the ground whilst the sun finally shines with abundance
and warmth as cool winds blow through your hair… “Spring has returned. The Earth is like a child that
knows poems.” –Rainer Maria Rilke.
Who, as a student in Russia, doesn’t remember their first spring, as the sun finally bursts through the
clouds and signals the end of the long and cruel winter? Sure, there are other seasons where people might
like: winter with his brilliant whites; summer with its sandy beaches or autumn with its colorful displays of color;
but eventually, everyone remembers their first spring, signifying an end to the long dreary days of cold and the
symbol of a brand new beginning.
Spring is celebrated around the world as a rebirth, a renewal of the old. In Russia, youngsters
celebrate the entry of the new season with the “Dream Flash” festival, an annual event held in popular spots
in Russia. The signature of the event is the blowing of bubbles by everyone, who are dressed in colorful
clothes or elaborate costumes with funky hairstyles. Everyone goes around with free hug signs, dancing,
singing and generally having a good time amidst the bubble covered crowds.
Spring also means that the start of the new semester is here, and students can go fresh-faced to
classes after the winter holiday with a fresh spring to their step, no longer burdened with heavy winter clothing
and sub-zero temperatures. The first few weeks of spring can be a bit trying on the spirits, with the melting
snow filling the streets and pavements with muddy sludge and the occasional light sprinkling of rain. Bus as
the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers”, as these tiny discomforts do little to dampen the spirits of
people with the arrival of warmer weather and lovely spring beauty.
With the simple joys that the season brings, it is not hard to see why spring is a season many people
love, and many will miss when leaving Russia behind. We have all experienced the joy and rebirth the new
spring brings with it. In a way, spring symbolizes our youth, we who are young, freshly armed with knowledge
to bloom and face the world before us. Our time spent in the soil, nurtured by the soil has prepared us to bloom
into the world to face our future ahead.

Malaysian
Inter-Varsity Games
Most people think that medical students are studious and studying 24/7 but in Russia the
Malaysian medical students are getting prepared both mentally and physically. When the students
hear the word “inter-varsity” there will definitely be an adrenaline rush in them.
Malaysian Inter-varsity Games (MIG) is a carnival of sports and an amalgamation of a
number of universities in Russia organizing a sport event in the name of Malaysian Students' Association
in Russian Federation. Every spring this anticipated event is hosted by different universities
such as Russian National Research Medical University (RNRMU), I.M. Sechenov First Moscow
State Medical University (MSMU), Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy (NNSMA), Kursk
State Medical University (KSMU) and Volgograd State Medical University (VSMU).
There are Malaysian students from non-medical universities such as Moscow Aviation Institute
(MAI) and State Marine Technology University of Saint Petersburg (SMTU) turn up to participate
in the games. This sports event is participated by over 700 athletes from their respective
universities.
Through this event, Malaysian students are challenged to push their physical limits in sport
action. Not only that, this requires solid leadership skills in bringing the 7 universities together as
one accord. The paramount purpose behind these games is to create unity among all Malaysian
students who will be Malaysia's future leadership and building blocks. During the sport, relationships
are built among the students and it will not just end there itself.
In the coming year of 2014, Russian National Research Medical University is privileged to
host the next Malaysian Inter-varsity Games. Even though the graduating batch of 2013 will not be
physically there anymore, the spirit and the support will always be there cheering up the next
generation of medical doctors.
We have run our race, we fought it well. Kudos, and here’s wishing all the best to the organizing
team of Pirogov Malaysian Inter-varsity Games (PMIG) 2014.
Go M2 Lions!!!

MASSAD
Malaysian Student
Annual Dinner
Russian National Research Medical University ( RNRMU ) has approximately 500 Malaysian
students and increasing as the years go by. MASSAD was first founded in the year 2006 and it had
been a tradition that it was organized by medical students in their 2nd year.
The very main aim of MASSAD is to bring unity among the Malaysian students, at the same
time to honor the 6th year graduates who are heading home as medical doctors, giving out the best
academic awards and a rendezvous for socializing.
Throughout the years, MASSAD had evolved to bring on a more challenging and meaningful
role to students here in RNRMU. Due to the high living cost in Moscow, different culture and
language barrier, MASSAD had been a great platform for the students in RNRMU to brush up their
leadership, communication skills and the adaptability to any changes in life, all these are definitely
something that cannot be learnt in medical books but only through exposure and experience.
As for our batch - graduation class 2013, MASSAD 2009 [Tonight We Unite, Together We
Ignite] has been of great significance for each and every single one of us. The moments of carrying
Tao Fu Fa together from Izmailoskii Park during winter, preparing for the sales during midnight,
getting our 1st Gold in Interbatch 2009 and so on had been a great memory to many of us. Needless
to say, there were times the committees faced hard and frustrating situations organizing this
event which cost 25,000 USD in this Soviet City. But all those hard work and sweat paid off with the
smiles, laughter and joy MASSAD 2009 brought to those who attended it. All these memories which
we will cherish for a lifetime will not be possible without the support of everyone in the batch.
Still, the one thing that we cherish the most is not the successful event that we can organize
but the relationship and unity that we were able to build through this event. By doing so, we believe
that this has already been a big step to the many which are not able to be achieved.
Once again, Tonight We Unite, Together We Ignite.

Summer
“Then followed that beautiful season... Summer....
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood.”
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Mr. Longfellow was absolutely right ,of course. If living in Russia has thought us anything, it’s
not to take the great sun for granted. With a lengthy and somewhat violent winter, we long for May
to come, so we can shed off those thick jackets and bring out those beach shorts (we are Malaysians
after all. Hawaiian shorts and flip flops are our thing).
Russia is more welcoming than ever during this time of the year. The luxurious sunshine,
breezy winds, and sights of beautiful tulips everywhere keep us outdoors most of the day. Time is
also of no essence since the daylight hours are longer. More time for us to enjoy the outdoors, I’d
say. Some of us find the best way to enjoy a summer’s day is to bring a good book and a cuppa, sit
by the lake or at the park, and just relax. Of course, relaxation isn’t what we get if that book happens
to be Kumar and Clark’s Clinical Medicine, or Mcleod ’s review on clinical examination, but hey, it’s
a case of choose or let choose.
So sunny days, cool breezes, and most importantly Jack Frost’s on a long holiday… you’d
think we’re crazy to let all of that go to waste. Weekends are typically spent in our beloved park
opposite the hostel. A Saturday of leisure would most likely include BBQ sessions with friends or a
picnic near the lake.
Guys would probably welcome summer like it’s their favourite hot celebrity….it’s their golden
opportunity to catch up on outdoor sports! The futsal enthusiasts would gather at the ground and do
their thing. Frisbee has also become a trend among us for some time now (I’m thinking our Gold
medals from the last intervarsity egged that on). If you don’t see them kicking a ball or flinging a
Frisbee, then they’re probably just hanging around and catching up over cold beers (or just cold
“pepsis”..you know, whatever works..).
Many would prefer to take their RnR someplace bigger and touristy…say, the Kolomenskaya
park or the Tsarisinno park. These places have awesome landscape and manmade lakes, so
picnics would be just heavenly. These places are also god sent for avid photographers who want to
catch summers beauty in celluloid.
True enough, exams are around the corner, but aren’t they always? All work and no play
makes Jack a dull boy, and if jack was in a medical school he’d know what we’re talking about. After
hours of staring into the textbooks and lecture notes, its only fair that we get our fun.
They say autumn is the summers ghost. Well I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t true. When the glorious
weather is replaced by bouts of gale and shedding trees, it’s Mother earths way of saying “well you
had your fun. Now let’s see those woolly jackets of yours again.”

Final Exams
Winter has passed, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth, the time
of singing has come! Spring is definitely one of the seasons students love, as we get to
enjoy the warmth of the sun, the smell of fresh air, and have a good time taking a stroll in the
park as we admire the blooming flowers and hear the sounds of kids playing in the field. As
much as we love to dwell in and recharge ourselves with the beauty of this season, the end
of spring marks the beginning of the most challenging time of our academic year – Final
exams.
Mid May, this is the time of the year where you could see many students running up
and down chasing after their teachers to complete their academic requirement. From one
department to another, from one hospital to another and sometimes even from dawn to
dusk! Why?
Every journey has a beginning. To qualify ourselves to the final exam, each student is
required to collect his/her academic credits (Зачет ) for every subject. Prior to receiving our
credits, we were to first complete all our Class tests (Контрольная Работа) and qualify
ourselves to take the Unit Tests (Kоллоквиумы). Only when a student has finished the Unit
Tests, he or she will be qualified to take the Credit Test.
In a nutshell, for every single subject there are 3 levels of tests that a student has to
persevere through in order to be eligible for the final exams. Each academic year, there are
approximately 9-10 subjects which a student has to complete. By the end of Spring, even if
there is only 1 subject left with 1 Unit Test or 1 Class Test or 1 Credit Test unaccomplished,
the Dean’s Office has full authority to expel the student from the university without any prior
notice.
As challenging as it sounds, where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Many have braced through the hardship of being a medical student and proved themselves
worthy of the Medical Degree that they are entitled to. When all finals are settled and done
with, it is then time where students would rush to the airport and reward themselves for the
long awaited summer holidays!
While for the rest of us, it would mean …. “Congratulations! You are officially a Medical
Doctor!”

Home is where the heart is - so true, and indeed the feeling of every one of us when we
are far away from home.
Well, to be honest, the anxiety starts in March itself. Hearing students asking each other :-
"Hey, have you bought your ticket back home?"
“Which airlines are you taking?"
"When you are leaving?Right after exam?"
"Want to share a taxi to the airport?"
B a c k t o
So, March, the month which the our initial preparation starts - buying tickets.
Well, Al-amin Travels, the popular travel agent among us, the students to get our tickets.
Yes, almost all of us get our tickets there! Now the secret of their success revealed!
Next up after buying tickets, what else if it’s not the count down. Oh my god! Waiting
makes the heart grows fonder! How much I miss home.
The month of June, a very stressful month for students clearing up exams but the feeling
you get when you have passed your last paper, its unexplainable!
Well, this does happen from 1st year right up to the 5th year (obviously 6th year is another
whole different scenario), but still, each time in this period, we will know what heaven
actually means. I bet you would say I'm being overly dramatic but try living in a country like
Russia where winter is about 6 months , you would say the same thing or even dramatic (
whatever rocks your boat )
.
Well, personally, once home my mind wanders around thinking about what else, if not
Malaysian FOOD! Nothing beats mum's cooking but still, sitting in Mamak’s stall with a
bunch friends talking nonsense, with a glass of Teh tarik, can be just heavenly!
And guess what, as a student abroad in Russia, not all of us will complain about the Malaysian
weather because now we know the true meaning of a tropical country and what it has
to offer. Trust me on that!
Lying down on the beach (a real one, not a man made one as what we have here in
Moscow), with your beach pants and enjoying the sun, words can’t explain the feeling!
Shopping is just paradise, because you do not have to worry about the weight of your
purse (sorry mummy and daddy), going to the cinema for a movie where you actually can
watch in its original language, not a dubbed Russian version of it.

M a l a y s i a
And here comes the best part…. you can DRIVE your very own car wherever you want! Oh
man, seriously! Taking the subway here and boarding and alighting from a bus is such a
trouble, especially in winter!
So, from the hostel, to the airport with a taxi. Check in DONE.
Baggage over weight is never a problem while returning home BUT it’s not always the
same vice versa. I bet all of us have had been through that. It sure is one hell of an experience.
After a grueling 13 hours of travel, it is god sent to hear your flight captain say, "Ladies and
gentleman, welcome to KUALA LUMPUR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, where the local
time is 2pm in the evening and the outside temperature is 35 °C.”
Finally, after passing through the customs , here we are, in a place that we call heaven on
Earth. Home sweet home!
At the back of the mind, an inner voice says that we have only 2 months left to enjoy this.
But again, consciously you say " Enjoy while it lasts". Anyway, all good things must come
to an end, right?
But,this time around when we are about to graduate, things are so different. Moscow
seems to be more interesting. Suddenly, the feeling of “I-am-so-gonna-miss-Moscow” gets
stronger within us. We never know how much we are going to miss this place, this lifestyle
here and our friends. But its okay, smile because it happened!
The past 6 years, Moscow has taught us so much. We have learned not only about our
subjects, but also about life lessons. Even though we have not mentally prepared
ourselves for working life, survival in Moscow will somehow aid us through the process.
Starting a whole new chapter in our life very soon, interviews, induction, first day of work, a
different scenario awaits us. Time to say, Goodbye Moscow, you will be missed!!

Medical Education in Russia
Russia, a land of great scholars, has been a leading centre of culture, science
and education in Europe for centuries. The Russian higher education standards with
advanced and sophisticated teaching methods and scientific approaches are considered to
be one of the best in the world. Russian degrees have gained global recognition and
topped UNESCO rankings.
The grading system here is actually quite simple but efficient. All subjects are
graded 'Credit/No Credit' (зачёт/незачёт, pronounced "zachòt/nyezachòt"). Among these,
certain subjects are exam orientated and so unfortunately we meet them at the end of the
semester, or sometimes even during “cycles” if you’re 4th year and above. The marking
system here ranges from 2-5, with the former regarded as fail, and the latter as excellent.
Au contraire to the Malaysian system where written exams are the norm, here it’s correlated
with written and oral. This format of exam becomes more regular as we proceed into
upper clinical years. As we have come to realize, an oral exam is no piece of cake. Anybody
can read up a chapter and then just throw it all out in paper, but when you can
explain the same chapter in your own comprehension without losing the main concept, that
accentuates your knowledge.
Well it goes without saying then that the Russian language plays a key part in your
academic performance. What’s your mind will only stay in your mind if you don’t have the
capacity to verbalize it. Since our 4th year onwards is fully conducted in Russian, its only
mandatory that students speak Russian in classes and during practicals in the hospitals.
The teachers here cannot stress enough the importance of mastering the Russian
language as at a point that becomes the fine line between an adequate student and a
competent one. Knowing the language not only enables better communication with the
teachers, but also eases the rapport with the patients (many locals here don’t speak English).
How do we manage then, you ask? Well, the obvious answer would be practice,
practice, and more practice. One doesn’t have to be a linguist to know that any
language comes easily when you use it regularly. Many of us can clearly remember a time
when we could only say baby words like “Kuritsa” and “voda bez gasa”. Perhaps the fact
that many locals prefer to converse in russian helped us to master the Russian language in
a short span of time.
Garnering an education from Russia is an adventure by itself,I would say. We not
only accomplished our main goal of getting a medical degree, but learnt valuable life
lessons as well. I think living and studying here for 6 years has only made us stronger and
viable to future undertakings.

Russian Medium Student
Chandry Annamalay
Honesty is the best policy
chandry_annamalay@hotmail.com
03-51037986
2007 was the year I first came to Moscow. Fast forward seven years and here I am, a
successful graduate of the Russian National Research Medical University. Words cannot express
the joy and sheer exuberance that I feel in my heart. My friends and I who have embarked on this
journey together are now proud holders of a medical degree. I’d like to take this opportunity to
congratulate all RNRMU students who have thrived and given their all to get here today. I wish the
very best for everyone in all their future undertakings.
The first day I stepped into my class, I hid myself in a corner. I felt awkward. Being the only
foreigner in my
class was something that took me a while to adjust to. Thankfully, I made wonderful friends along
the way who made me feel welcomed and introduced me to the ways of their culture and country.
They too, are part of my success today.
Be that as it may, my biggest concern when I signed up for a medical programme in the Russian
medium of instruction was the language barrier. As I’d suspected, my first year in Russia was
beyond exhausting. My inability to converse in Russian fluently in my first year magnified the
difficulty of my degree. When it came to studying from the medical textbooks which were also in
Russian, I had to literally translate everything line by line from Russian to English. I studied both
English and Russian textbooks so that I could compare and identify the medical terminologies to
have a better and whole understanding of the subject.
Many a time, I have sat in class trying to make sense of the ongoing lecture but failing indefinitely.
I was often lost in my classes and the lectures were a little too fast-paced for me as I did not comprehend
the language fully at that time. Because of this, I was required to go home and put in
additional effort and revise the subject as though I did not attend the class at all. Since my degree
was carried out fully in Russian, my lecturers set high standards for me as I was expected to
perform as well as the Russian students. Therefore, I was sure to always be prepared in advance.
This generally turned me into a more hardworking and independent person. Nevertheless, juggling
between classes, homework, extra-curricular activities as well as household chores, wasn’t at all
easy.
However, by the time I got to my third year, I got a grip of how things worked around here. I no
longer had to carry a Russian-English dictionary in my pocket wherever I went. My Russian communication
skills became comparatively better, if not excellent. I observed tremendous improvements
in my studies and I got a better study-life balance. I only have my friends and roommates to
thank, as they have been nothing but supportive and helpful. My Russian friends especially made
studying simpler by getting me to speak better Russian.
Studying in Russia has certainly changed my life for the better. Its people are bold and they speak
their mind. They have taught me to stand up for myself. I have made more friends than I ever
thought I would in these 7 years. I have enjoyed every bit of my time in this country and I shall
forever hold these memories close to my heart. I’d most definitely miss the beautiful parks, the
countryside and even more, I’d miss winter in Moscow. It has been an amazing experience and I
thank my parents’ everyday for helping me make this choice.
