This document aims to highlight
some of the Danone Institutes’ activities worldwide,
according to their current main topics of interest.
It is not an exhaustive review of all Danone Institutes’ activities.

Danone Institutes
HISTORICAL COMMITMENT TO HEALTH
A commitment to health and well-being has always been at
the heart of Danone. Isaac Carasso, founder of the Danone
brand, started making yogurts in 1919 in Barcelona using lactic
cultures from the Pasteur Institute in Paris. He took his cue from
the work of Nobel-prize winning biologist Elie Metchnikoff,
which suggested that bacteria could help with the intestinal
disorders then so frequent among local children.
Ten years later, his son Daniel Carasso set up business in Paris.
At their launch, Danone yogurts were prescribed by physicians
and distributed through pharmacies. Today, more and more
consumers enjoy the health benefits of Danone yogurts and of
milk fermented with selected probiotics such as Bifidobacterium
or Lactobacillus casei.
The creation of the Danone Institutes demonstrate the strength
and durability of Danone’s commitment to health, and enable
the brand to play a significant civic role through concrete
actions going far beyond yogurt production.
MISSION
The mission of Danone Institutes is to develop knowledge on
the links between nutrition, diet and health, and to disseminate
that knowledge to the general public. To accomplish this,
Danone Institutes:
• promote research in nutrition
• bring together scientists, involved in dietary and nutritional
studies, with health and education professionals
• serve as a clearinghouse for information on all diet-related
subjects.
ACTIVITIES
To carry out their mission, Danone Institutes set up concrete
programs of actions. They may deal with any food or nutrient
that could have an impact on human health and are generally
designed to address major public health nutrition issues.
Danone Institutes are committed to taking a multidisciplinary
approach that combines medicine, biology, and the human
sciences.
While programs of actions are primarily initiated at the local
level, some of them can be adapted and implemented in other
countries. Danone Institutes also collaborate to develop
programs with a broad international scope.
STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING
Danone Institutes are organized as independent associations,
foundations, or similar entities and are funded by local Danone
companies. In general, their members are recognized experts
in the fields of diet, nutrition, and health and work in public
institutions such as hospitals, universities, or research centers.
Some of the members represent the local Danone subsidiary.
All Danone Institutes follow common guidelines that guarantee
a clear and democratic organization. They are generally
composed of a Scientific Council, a Board and members. The
roles of each are similar in every country:
• The Scientific Council, composed of 6 to 25 members,
establishes the communication and action programs of the
Danone Institute.
• The Board is made up of 5 to 8 scientific experts and
representatives of Danone. It is responsible for implementing
and managing strategic decisions and budgets. It also
represents the institute in its daily interactions with Danone,
the press, and outside agencies.
• All members are strongly committed to the objectives of the
Danone Institute. They are selected from the local scientific
community and their membership is renewable.
• A general meeting is held once a year to review the Institute’s
activities and budget and to hold elections.
ETHIC
Danone Institutes are not-for-profit organizations, independent
of the local Danone companies. They act freely and
independently, and their programs of actions contain no
commercial information.
“Nowadays the relationship between diet and health is becoming well
documented: we now know for sure that diet, when appropriate,
contributes to good health, while the prevention of chronic diseases such
as obesity, diabetes, cardio-vascular diseases... through healthy diet and
lifestyle is becoming a key public health issue. In that context, Danone
Institutes, by supporting nutrition research and disseminating relevant
scientific knowledge on food, diet and nutrition, is more than ever at
the center of Danone's commitment to health”.
Franck Riboud, Chairman and CEO of Groupe Danone
Danone Institutes
today sponsor more
than 20 different research
support programs in 12 countries, whose rules,
such as frequency, type of scientist, amount,
and the conditions for application, are specific
to each country (see table opposite). The
Scientific Council selects winners after an
independent review of applications, the main
selection criteria being scientific merit.
Programs fund research in basic and clinical
nutrition; they encourage nutrition researchers
to collaborate with other disciplines, and
support community-oriented nutrition
programs. The focus of the research varies from
country to country, depending on the judgment
of the local Scientific Council, as is shown in
these different examples: Nutrition and
Inflammation (Germany, 2006), Food habits
(Israel, 2007), Obesity (Indonesia, 2008)…
➜ First Laureate at Danone Institute Indonesia
The Danone Institute of Indonesia has three main
programmes: research grants for doctoral students
and institutions and publication grants for
international journals.
Information is available at the website:
www.danonutrindo.org
➜ Danone International Prize for Nutrition
At the international level, the Danone International Prize
for Nutrition, which totals 120 000 €, is awarded every two years
to a researcher or research team, which has developed a novel nutritional
concept and has contributed to advancing the frontiers of human nutrition.
Six outstanding researchers have been awarded the prize since 1997.
“The goal of the Danone International Prize for Nutrition is to recognize
and encourage top-level scientists to develop innovative scientific concepts
and approaches in nutrition, and to encourage them to find effective
solutions that will help people live healthier lives. It is hoped that the prize
will help to place nutrition at the heart of the public health debate.”
Prof. Manuel Serrano Rios, Complutense University, Madrid, Chairman of Danone Institute
International.
➜ Research grants from the Danone Institute of Japan encourage
researchers in health and nutrition. One of the most important activities
of Danone Institute Japan (DIJ) is to select promising projects with
pioneering hypotheses and reliable scientific approaches, placing a
priority on probiotics and childhood nutrition. Each applicant should be
an affiliated member of a Japanese Institute. All applications are reviewed
and graded by DIJ scientific council members, and the winners are
nominated at the DIJ Board Meeting. The winner’s research results are
presented to DIJ members at a DIJ conference. Every year, six to 11 grants
are allocated for a total of 75 000 €.
“Japan is known to be a country where many people live to an advanced
age, and the traditional Japanese diet is considered to be a contributing
factor. However, as the lifestyle of the Japanese people is westernized, the
prevalence rate of diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidaemia has been
increasing. The research that received the award aimed to reveal the
relationship between diet and disease by comparing Japanese Americans
with the Japanese. The DIJ research grant covered part of the subjects’
blood test costs, and supported our effort to identify the health problems
that the Japanese will face in the near future as the lifestyle is westernized.
I greatly appreciate its contribution.”
Dr. Ohnishi, one of the winners of the research grant from Danone Institute of Japan in 2006.
➜ Best Poster Awards are offered by Danone Institute of Turkey for
the best scientific posters in major national congresses. For each congress,
2 awards are allocated for a total of 1 500 €.
“In 2006, Danone Institute of Turkey is awarding Best Poster Awards at
four national congresses to researchers working in the field of nutrition.
The Best Poster Awards were established by the organizing committees of
the congresses, and award winners were selected by congress scientific
committees, independent of the members of Danone Institute of Turkey.
Danone Institute of Turkey is dedicating 6 000 euros per year for the Best
Poster Awards program in order to support our nation’s researchers in
their work in the field of nutrition to promote health.”

➜ Research Award in Nutrition and Health (Israel)
In recent years, thirty research grants were awarded by
the Danone Institute for promoting research by young
scientists on issues at the forefront of nutrition to promote
health. The awards were given to promising researchers
at leading universities and research institutes in Israel.
symposia proceedings, monographs, books, CD-
ROMs, leaflets and newsletters. Written by
world-renowned experts, these publications
cover a wide variety of topics, present overviews
of recent developments, promote consensus
and/or explore controversy surrounding relevant
issues. They are generally designed to be
practical tools for health professionals. Most
Danone Institutes’ publications are available
free of charge and may be downloaded from the
Institutes’ websites.
➜ 9th ITEMS release
The 9th book of the ITEMS
series was published by the
Italian Danone Institute. The
new book, entitled Diet,
health, wellness: nutritional
principles under different
conditions of life was edited by
Professor Carlo Agostoni,
Paediatrician, Department of Paediatrics, University
of Milan, and Professor Ermanno Lanzola, Nutritionist,
Research Centre on Human Nutrition and Dietetics,
University of Pavia.
A number of Italian experts cooperated in writing the
ten chapters of the publication, which deals with the
nutritional problems associated with various life
conditions: women during pregnancy and lactation,
newborns, breastfed children and adolescents,
obesity, diabetes, dislipidaemia, cardiovascular
disease, colonic disease, etc. The last two chapters
are dedicated to the bioactive components of food
and to the relations between food preparation
processes and diet.
Six thousand (6 000) copies of the book were printed
and distributed during congresses or mailed to health
professionals free of charge.
➜ Daily Recommended
Allowances of Nutrients in
the Mexican Population, this
book contains the latest information
on the daily-recommended allowances
of nutrients in the Mexican population.
It is intended for health and dietary professionals
involved in planning and evaluating diets.
“This attractive book, endorsed by the Secretary of Health and the National
Academy of Medicine of Mexico, contains the first of a two-part report of a
working group composed of 50 experts from 15 Mexican Health Institutions.
Recommended allowances of nutrients were updated based on present
knowledge and adapted to the conditions of the Mexican population.”
Prof. H. Bourges, National Institute of Nutrition,
President, Danone Institute of Mexico.
➜ Acquisition of food-related behaviours in children: Critical
Windows for later health
Danone Institute International recently supported the publication of the
proceedings of an international pre-congress
symposium that was held at the 10th European
Nutrition Conference on July 2007. It brought
together academics and health professionals to
reflect on the factors that affect a child’s ability to
maintain a healthy body during growth. Edited by
Dr France Bellisle (University of Paris) and Dr Inge
Lissau (National Institute of Public Health,
Copenhagen), this supplement to the British Journal of Nutrition includes
the lectures which took place during the symposium and is of interest to
paediatricians, biologists, public health policy makers and scientists
involved in the childhood-related industry. This supplement and the online
conferences are available at the Danone Institute International website.
➜ Ten years Danone Institute China
One hundred (100) investigators wrote the brief bilingual introduction
regarding the 116 research programs which have been supported by
Danone Institute China over the past ten years. The research results are
much closer to daily life demands by the general public and related
government departments. There are some programs that involve research
on nutritional education methods which can be implemented in other
similar situations. Thus, it is an important model that could be copied in
China. This 300-page book is disseminated to health professionals and
some government officers in China and abroad.
➜ Objectif Nutrition
The objective of the publication of Danone Institute
France is to help health professionals in their mission
of informing patients about nutrition.
Since 1991, Danone Institute France has published a
free quarterly journal called “Objectif Nutrition” for
more than 25 000 health professionals. Written by nutrition specialists,
Objectif Nutrition gives practical and original scientific information to
help doctors increase their knowledge in the field of nutrition.

To make scientific
knowledge available
to scientists as well as
practitioners, Danone Institutes promote
scientific exchanges by regularly organizing
scientific meetings, such as symposia,
workshops or forums involving some of the
most renowned experts worldwide. These
events present the latest developments in the
field of diet, nutrition and health, identify new
research avenues, and explore the practical
implications of new knowledge.
Danone Institutes also establish education
programs to provide health professionals with
up-to-date knowledge that may be useful for
clinical nutrition practices. They take a
multidisciplinary approach combining medicine,
biology, and the human sciences.
➜ Gut, Fat, Iron and Brain: Where are we?
During the 3rd World Congress of Paediatrics,
Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Danone
Institute International organized a symposium on what
we currently know about the role fatty acids, omega-
3 and iron play in Brain and Gut development in
Children. Chaired by Prof. Ricardo Uauy and Dr Virginia
Stallings, this symposium included a series of lectures
and discussions by internationally-recognized experts.
“The occasion of the 3rd WCPGHAN in Iguassu Brazil
provides a unique opportunity to congregate members
of the Danone International Institutes as well as selected
guests participants to discuss new knowledge on how
essential fatty acids and iron affect brain development
before and after birth and what we can do to support fetal,
infant and child brain development by providing optimal
nutrition to mothers and children during these critical
periods. The program addresses the emerging area of
crosstalk between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain
starting from the programming of smell and taste
preferences in early life to the role of nutrients in establishing
hormonal and metabolic patterns that affect brain circuitry
and contribute to the regulation of energy balance.”
Professor Virginia Stallings, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, USA,
President of Dannon Institute USA. Professor Ricardo Uauy, University
of Chile, Chile & School of Tropical Medicine of London, UK, President
of Danone Institute Southern Cone. Co-Chairmen of the symposium.
➜ The Danone Chair is organized every year in
partnership with two Belgian universities (one Dutchspeaking
and one French-speaking university). It is a 15hour
lecture split over several days that aims at highlighting
recent developments in the field of human nutrition. The
lecturers are professors from well-known international universities
and experts in their area. The chairs are a valuable asset to Belgian universities
for establishing important professional contacts and for exchanging scientific
information with scholars of great renown. Since 2008, it has been agreed
to place an abstract and key slides at the end of each lesson on the website
of the Belgian Danone Institute to lend the entire event current value,
instead of writing a monograph after the event has taken place. In 2008,
the speakers were Professor Luc Cynober, from Université Paris 5 (France),
who spoke on the subject of the “Place of amino acids in clinical nutrition,”
and Professor John Blundell, from the University of Leeds (UK), whose lecture
was built around the theme of the “Psychology of Appetite and Weight Gain.”
➜ African Nutrition Leadership Program for French-Speaking Africans
Danone Institute International already sponsored the first two African
Nutrition Leadership Programs for French-Speaking Africans. This oneweek
intense training session held in Morocco each year is organized in
conjunction with the Federation of African Nutrition Societies Congress
and in collaboration with INUS (International Union of Nutritional Sciences),
UNU (United Nations University), INF (International Nutrition Foundation)
with the active support of VLAG (Wageningen University). It is the occasion
for future African leaders in Nutrition from French-speaking countries
to be given leadership skills and specific knowledge such as
communication, management or fundraising.
➜ The Nutrition Leadership Institute ® (NLI) sponsored
by the Dannon Institute USA is designed to provide the
country’s most talented doctoral graduates and medical
doctors, from nutrition and related fields, with the global
perspective and skills essential to help them become more effective
leaders in academia, government and industry. This intensive training
program combines group and individual exercises led by professional
leadership trainers with the opportunity to interact with and learn from
nationally recognized leaders in nutrition. Held in alternating years since
June 1998, the NLI has trained more than 120 future leaders and hosted
more than 50 program guests since its creation. In 2006 the alumni of the
program established the Dannon Institute Nutrition Leadership Institute
Alumni Association. Its mission is to attract exceptional scientists, nurture
their professional development, and foster multi-disciplinary nutrition and
communication to promote the nutritional well-being of individuals
worldwide.
"My experience at the Nutrition Leadership Institute afforded me the unique
opportunity to interact not only with the senior leaders in the field of
nutrition, but with peers that have interests and experiences similar to mine.
The establishment of relationships with these individuals will prove to be
exceptionally important in my personal and professional development."
James P. McClung, Ph.D., M.S., Nutritional Biochemist, Military Nutrition Division,
United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), 2007 Nutrition
Leadership Institute Participant.

PROGRAMS FOR
EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS
Education professionals can play an important
role in promoting healthy eating habits to the
general public, particularly among children. For this
reason, Danone Institutes, in collaboration with
multidisciplinary groups of experts such as
education professionals, pediatricians, dieticians
and psychologists, have developed several
educational tools for teachers and for school cooks.
➜ Il piacere di crescere
attivi (“The pleasure of
growing up active”):
Developed by the Danone
Institute of Italy, this little
handbook proposes games
for children to promote
physical activity. This
material is intended for parents as well as education
professionals and was developed in collaboration
with the University of Milan. Two thousand (2000)
copies have been distributed in the paediatric
departments of Milanese hospitals.
➜ Celebrate Healthy
Eating
This nutritional education
program of the Dannon
Institute USA is specifically
designed for preschool
children and is accessible
free of charge in English
and Spanish at www.celebratehealthyeating.org.
Families can read about nutrition news, create recipes
for kids, and discover children’s books about nutrition.
Teachers can find educational information, lesson
plans, and activities on different food groups.
➜ Faut Que Ça Bouge! (Let’s Move!)
Physical activity is necessary to build and maintain
good health throughout a person’s life. In order to
educate children in elementary schools about the
benefits of physical activity,
Danone Institute France has
developed a tool kit for teachers
that includes ideas for classroom activities
promoting a healthy, active lifestyle for pupils.
The “Let’s Move!” program includes fact sheets
on “Physical Activity and Health”, activities, a
poster, and booklets for children’s families, as well as a website for teachers
(www.fautquecabouge-enseignant.org). The proposed activities and their
ease of implementation in the school environment were selected based
upon their ability to promote healthy physical activity habits for children.
The materials were developed by a multidisciplinary committee of experts
including paediatricians, nutritionists, and doctors, as well as physical
activity professionals and teachers.
PROGRAMS FOR COMMUNICATION PROFESSIONALS
Because of the increasing role of the media in communicating
about nutrition to professionals and the general public, Danone
Institutes organise training sessions for journalists to facilitate
dialogue between scientists and the press. Danone Institutes
also award prizes to journalists who have excelled at covering
topics related to diet, nutrition and health.
➜ Prize for Scientific Journalism: Every year since 1993, Danone Institute
Spain has awarded a prize of 3 000 Euros to a Spanish journalist who has
excelled at covering health and nutrition topics.
Considering all that we know of the importance that the mass media has
in the training and education of the public, the Danone Institute Spain
has offered a Prize for Scientific Journalism that can be drawn from all
of the journalistic works published or issued in the year previous to the
call for entries, in subjects related to Nutrition, Feeding and Health. This
prize has been granted in different outstanding professional editions of
health communication. The selection of the winner is made by the
Scientific Council of the Danone Institute.
➜ Danone Institute Journalists Workshop: Each year, Danone Institute
Germany brings together about 30 top journalists with a scientific
background and ten renowned scientific experts for a workshop which
takes place over two half-days. The aim of the workshop is to develop
the dialogue between the media and the scientific community by focusing
on nutrition topics of public interest. Since 2001 they have reflected the
focus of the Research Funding Program developed by the Institute from
the previous year. Brochures produced as a result of the workshops are
available to the general public and specialists and can be downloaded
free of charge from the Danone Institute Germany website.

Because
improving the feeding
behavior of the general
population is a key public health issue, Danone
Institutes have developed a large range of
information and education programs intended
for children, parents, pregnant women, the
elderly, and athletes. These programs consist
of radio and TV programs, leaflets, folders, kits,
games, and contests. They are generally
distributed free of charge (only handling and
shipping costs may be asked for).
➜ Nutrition at children’s age: The Danone Institute
in Germany offers materials for primary school lessons.
The aim is to enable teachers to include nutritional
topics in various subjects as part of school lessons.
An educational CD-ROM intended for teachers, pupils,
and parents is also enclosed.
➜ The Nutrition By Play:
The Danone Institute in the
Czech Republic has
developed a nutritionbased
computer game for
children between 7 and 10
years of age. The goal of
the project is to contribute
to preventing childhood obesity by encouraging
children to adopt healthy eating habits. The game,
which shows how the body works and illustrates the
differences between healthy and unhealthy foods, was
developed by a multidisciplinary team which included
a paediatrician, a psychologist, and a nutritionist. The
game is distributed to the public through primary
schools and relevant not-for-profit organizations.
Worksheets for pupils in school years 1-5 were also
prepared for the game. The whole complex
programme containing the CD with the game,
worksheets and courses for teachers has obtained
accreditation by the Czech Ministry of Education,
Youth and Sport.
➜ Girl’s
Day Festival
from the Danone
Institute of Japan: Every year
since 2000, these brightly
illustrated leaflets are
distributed to preschoolers
and their mothers, outlining
three elements of nutrition.
➜ Online system for nutrient intake self-evaluation
Danone Institute China developed a web-based tool for the general
public in 2007. This tool can be used for free by registered visitors. It has
the following functions: Chinese food search, nutrient content search for
each food intake, nutrient intake calculation and evaluation. It provides
space for storing evaluation results and food intake for registered visitors
and their family members. It also provides the Chinese recommended
daily allowances data.
This web-based software was put online in February 2007, and up to now
it has attracted more than five thousand permanent users.
The tool was developed by DI in China based on the Chinese Food
Composition Table databank which is provided by the Chinese Centre for
Disease Control and Prevention, the partner of Danone Institute China.
➜ The Breakfast Project for indigent populations
The Breakfast Project for schoolchildren in south Jaffa-Tel Aviv, in
collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has been going on for the last
three years. In the framework of the project, 1 230 Arab and Jewish children
from underprivileged neighbourhoods in south Tel Aviv are given a
nutritious breakfast every morning before school, including sandwiches,
vegetables, yogurt and puddings.
A recent report on the breakfast project by the Israeli National Centre
for Disease Control in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and
Nutrition Service of the Ministry of Health has provided evidence of the
benefits of the project as follows:
a. The children were found to have better scholastic achievement
b. A reduction in attention and concentration problems and diminished
violence in school intermission.
c. An improvement in the children's nutritional condition and eating
habits
d. Fewer late arrivals and absentees due to illness
e. better knowledge about the significance of a variety of healthy food
f. Better understanding of the importance of drinking water in hot climates

“Nutritional
deficiencies can affect
the normal growth pattern in
childhood. Furthermore poor nutrition in infancy
and childhood might be associated with the
development of disease later in life. The most
important question in infant nutrition is how to
promote breast-feeding, to give children nature’s
gift—their mother’s milk. When breast-feeding
is not available, the question is how to
“humanize” infant formulas that are based on
cow’s milk, so that they more closely resemble
human milk in terms of distribution and
concentration of proteins, amino acids,
nucleotides, saturated and unsaturated fats,
electrolytes, trace elements, and vitamins.
Genetic factors play an instrumental role in the
human life-span and well-being. Environmental
influences, including nutrition and lifestyle, might
also play a key role. The main concern is to
determine the aspects of nutrition that affect the
longevity and the well-being of children. While
inadequate nutrition in utero is detrimental to
longevity, emerging data suggest that caloric
restriction during postnatal life augments life
expectancy. The main issues that need to be
addressed include the mechanistic and
metabolic aspects of nutrition that cause such
opposing consequences. Issues related to
overfeeding the infant or providing different
ratios of nutrients in specially designed formulas
have to be critically examined.
Overfeeding of children and adolescents may
program their own lipid and other metabolic
systems for life.
A mother’s nutrition during her own childhood
can influence her pregnancy and breast feeding and
her child’s risk, as an adult, of developing cardiovascular
disease, diabetes mellitus type II, hypertension, and possibly a
wider range of diseases. Overall, there is a great need to examine
the nutritional practices in early life and their impact on child
growth and on disease later in life.”
Prof. Emanuel Lebenthal, M.D., Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center, Jerusalem,
President of Danone Institute of Israel.
LOCAL RESEARCH SUPPORT
Danone Institutes are currently funding several national research
programs under various topics and disciplines in the field of nutrition
and child development, such as genetic and metabolic consequences of
childhood obesity, psychology and education in food behaviors, and
nutrients or metabolism linked to physical activities. Further information
and a database of all laureates’ research projects is available on our
international website: www.danoneinstitute.org.
A EUROPEAN RESEARCH PROGRAM
➜ EU childhood obesity: early programming by infant nutrition
This research program was created
after consensus between scientists
of the European Danone Institutes
on their interest in testing the
existence of a relationship between
the level of early protein intake and
the later risk of obesity. Five infants’
clusters, amounting to 1250
children, are followed in five
European countries (Belgium,
Germany, Spain, Italy, and Poland).
Half of them are fed a low-protein formula (recommendations’ bottom
limit); the others are fed a high-protein formula (recommendations’ top
limit) with isocaloric content. At the same time, a cluster of breastfed
infants is taken as control. Several parameters are considered, such as
height, weight, and biological factors. At the end of the program important
conclusions will be drawn on the relation between protein intake, growth
and obesity risk.
The program is carried out with financial support of up to 80% from the
European community (QLK1-2001-00389 program). Danone Institute
International is responsible for diffusing the results of this study.
PROGRAMS FOR HEALTH
AND EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS
➜ Symposium on nutritional solutions to major
public health problems of preschool children
Danone Institute
International has published
the proceedings of an
international pre-congress
symposium that was held at
the 18th International
Congress of Nutrition
(September 2005). Edited by
Dr Olivier Goulet, Dr
Emanuel Lebenthal, Dr
David Branski and Dr Peter
J.H. Jones, this supplement to the Journal of Pediatric,
Gastroenterology and Nutrition includes the plenary
lectures by experts which took place during the
symposium. This publication reviews available data
on major nutritional problems (causes and
consequences) of preschool children, to identify further
research needs and effective solutions related to
these problems. This supplement and the online
conferences are available at the Danone Institute
International website.
EDUCATION PROGRAMS
FOR EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS
AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC
In order to heighten nutritional awareness among
education professionals in contact with children,
Danone Institutes have implemented several
programs designed for day nurseries and other
preschool settings, targeting teachers as well as
children and parents.
➜ Growing leaps and bounds
The Dannon Institute
USA is developing
a new program to
reach new parents
through materials
delivered by their paediatricians.
Growing Leaps and Bounds is a series of 12 brochures
created by the Dannon Institute (USA) to serve as a
tool for paediatricians to provide to the parents of their
patients in order to promote a healthy lifestyle as early as possible in life.
“The incidence of obesity in children is growing at an astonishing rate,”
notes Christopher Duggan, M.D., M.P.H., Director, Clinical Nutrition Service,
Children’s Hospital, Boston and a member of the Dannon Institute’s Scientific
Council. “Paediatricians have a unique opportunity to make a difference
by sharing messages about children’s nutrition and physical activity with
parents and caregivers.”
Designed to be distributed by paediatricians at well-child examinations
from birth to age five, the Growing Leaps and Bounds series of twelve
brochures links healthy eating, exercise and childhood development
together and supports anticipatory guidance to help parents and
caregivers make the best choices for their children as they grow and
develop.
“With nutrition consulting not always a reimbursable expense for physicians,
it is essential to come up with innovative ways to help doctors to share
nutrition information, through programs like Growing Leaps and Bounds,
or by helping doctors refer patients to registered dieticians,”
Douglas C. Heimburger, M.D., M.S., F.A.C.P., Professor, Department of Nutrition Sciences and
Vice President of the Dannon Institute’s Board of Directors.
➜ The Matty Chiva Prize 2008 - 2009: “Livrenous
ta recette, nous en ferons un livre” (“Give
us your recipe, we’ll make a book out of it)
Launched in 2004 by Danone Institute France,
the objective of the Matty Chiva prize is to share
and diffuse initiatives to awaken children’s taste.
Every two years, this prize rewards actions aimed
to instil taste development in children. After the
success of the 2007 Matty Chiva Prize, with the
diffusion of a book-CD: “Les apprentis du goût”
“Apprentices of taste”, which was realized in collaboration with a famous
children’s songwriter and singer, Henri Des, Danone Institute France has
launched a new edition of the prize in 2008. The objective is to realize a
multidisciplinary project around taste for primary-school age children.
A book of recipes based on fruits and vegetables, written and illustrated
by children and aimed at children, will be published.
“It is essential to offer children variety in their diet, and to encourage them
to try and enjoy new tastes and flavours. Taste is a pleasure which needs
to be cultivated and developed and so ‘taste education’ is a key issue in
developing healthy eating habits.”
“Increasingly,
scientists are finding
that diet can play a positive role
in degenerative disease risk reduction. Foods
that promote health by reducing the risk of
degenerative disease, termed functional foods,
are becoming nutritional scientists’ main focus
as we enter the 21 st century.
Key to the evolution of any functional food is the
process of building a consensus concerning its
efficacy and safety. Such a process requires the
networking of leading nutritional scientists, both
regionally and globally. Danone Institutes provide
a unique opportunity for the creation of such a
network. By bringing together nutritional scientists
within individual countries and internationally,
the Danone Institutes can play a highly positive
role in the advancement of functional foods.
Extensive interaction among nutritional scientists
occurs through meetings of the respective Boards
and Scientific Councils of the Danone Institutes
within individual countries, as well as through
local and international Institute-sponsored
workshops, focus groups and working groups. In
these ways, the Danone Institute network
contributes, through advances in nutrition, to
improving the health of the world’s populations.”
Dr. Peter Jones, Director of the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods
and Nutraceuticals (RCFFN), University of Manitoba, President of
Danone Institute of Canada.
PROGRAMS OF RESEARCH SUPPORT
Danone Institutes encourage research on the theme
of “foods for health”, by supporting programs dealing
for instance with the prevention of allergies, genetics
linked with functional foods, and the metabolism of
osteoporosis. In 2006, Danone Institute Japan
sponsored a program on “Foods and Immunology
(including allergy) and / or Ageing” while in 2007,
Danone Institute Israël grantes searchers in human
nutrition focusing on the molecular pathways that
food components enhance antibacterials in the human.
All research programs on these topics are available on the
international website: www.danoneinstitute.org.
PROGRAMS OF INFORMATION FOR HEALTH
PROFESSIONALS
➜Tendancias en alimentacion functional” (tendencies in functional foods)
One is a book offered as much to experts in
nutrition as to health professionals, containing the
most recent excellent findings in the field of
Functional Foods. The content of this monograph
does not aim at being an exhaustive examination,
but only a selection of Functional Foods, and for
that reason, a greater dedication to the Prebióticos
(probiotics) and Probióticos (probiotics) appears.
This book tries to call attention to a field open to
the most modern theories of knowledge and
investigation in nutrition, as well as exploring the practical applications
of functional foods to improve health of individuals and groups.
➜ Publication in the journal of nutrition of the report of the working
group on foods with health benefits.
Danone Institute International and Danone Institute Canada recently
published as a Journal of Nutrition supplement, the proceedings of the
symposium: “Evidence for Health Claims on Food: How Much is Enough?”
that was presented as part of the Canadian Nutrition Congress (held in
Winnipeg, Canada, June 18 – 21, 2007). These proceedings, written by
international leading experts under the coordination of Dr Peter Jones
and Dr Primal Silva, provide a global perspective on the current state of
knowledge concerning the fast-emerging topic of health claims on food,
and should allow a better understanding of health benefits of foods. It
is available upon request.
➜ Symposium on Pre & Probiotics
As usual, the Belgian Danone Institute organized its yearly symposium.
In 2007, the main theme was “Prebiotics and Probiotics”. Being a subject
that is regularly on the news concerning its impact on health, it attracted
no fewer than 700 people, including doctors, nutrition professionals,
teachers and students in the field of nutrition. The lecturers, who were
experts in their area, came from different universities and high schools.
After giving a precise definition of what prebiotics and probiotics are,
they highlighted several topics such as new research on their use, their
effect on IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and their benefits to children.
They finished their talks with some practical information. All of the
presentations were given in a clear and scientific manner, allowing the
audience to perceive a very encouraging future of the impact of prebiotics
and probiotics on human health.

PROGRAMS OF INFORMATION FOR
THE GENERAL PUBLIC
➜ Regular Bulletins
The Danone Institute of Russia has published regular
bulletins since 2002. They aim to inform the general public
about the impact of food on health through various
topics such as “The role of probiotics in nutrition”, “Obesity
Feeding Behaviors
“The overall health situation is influenced by
many factors; some of them are known,
predictable, and more or less subject to
influence, some of them definitely are not.
Undoubtedly, nutrition is one of the most
important predictors of population health and
life quality, therefore circumstances connected
with nutrition are extremely important.
Feeding behavior seems to be one of the parts
of the “black box”, where such factors like
inborn and learned preferences, cognitive
behaviors and natural reflexes meet to create
a conglomeration of challenges for current
and future research. Danone Institutes are
among the prestigious institutions helping to
shed light on an area where even experienced
researchers mostly blunder, guided only by
their intuition. Support for research on feeding
behaviors reflects a good orientation and a
visionary competence, both desirable
attributes that reflect well on the institute.”
Prof. Zuzanna Brazdova, Masaryk University, President of Danone
Institute of Czech Republic.
PROGRAMS OF RESEARCH SUPPORT
Danone Institutes support national research programs
dealing with feeding behaviors in humans, such as
metabolism linked with weight gain, analysis of
sensory data in bulimia, psycho-sociology among the
elderly, genetics in hunger and satiety, psychology of
overeating, and recommendations for dietary
guidelines. Further information is available on our
international website: www.danoneinstitute.org.
➜ Grant-in-aid
Created by Danone Institute of Canada, this program
aims at encouraging research focused on or leading
to improved nutrition behavior during pregnancy,
childhood and adolescence. Projects involving
and fat-free products”, and “The role of calcium in children’s growth”.
“One of the most important components of the “foods for health” concept
is the general public’s level knowledge on scientific principles of rational
nutrition and on the quality and safety of different food products. The Danone
Institute of Russia has created a system for preparing and disseminating
such information. This is a very important step toward the improvement
of nutrition in the culture.”
Prof. Valentin Pokrovskiy, Russian Academy of Medical Science, President of Danone
Institute of Russia.
evaluation of nutrition education strategies and communication practices
are also considered for support.
➜ Obesity as a poverty-related emerging nutrition problem
The one-day international seminar was
co-organized in December 2007 by the
School of Health Nutrition, Universitas
Gadjah Mada and Yayasan Danone
Institute Indonesia. The seminar was
attended by 340 participants, from 15
provinces. The seminar was divided into
three sessions: “Global issues and policies
on obesity”, “Public Health approach for the prevention of obesity”, and
“Clinical approach to overcoming obesity”. Nine speakers were invited.
Thirteen poster presenters participated in the competition for three best poster
awards. Inauguration of the research grant award 2007 also took place.
PROGRAMS OF INFORMATION FOR THE GENERAL
PUBLIC
➜ Overcoming the prevalence of obesity in china
The Danone Institute in China cooperated with the Chinese Nutrition
Society to deal with nutrition knowledge in popular newspapers. Twentyfour
(24) articles were given by 17 well-know top nutritionists in China,
including the Vice-Minister of the Health Ministry, P.R. of CHINA. All
articles were related to the development of obesity, health hazards,
prevention, and cures including lifestyle change.
➜ “Una alimentacion saludable” (healthy eating)
The objective of this material is to offer a teacher educational material
to develop in the classroom. The basic content on Feeding and Nutrition
make it possible to support and to justify a certain direction in the
planning of school menus, being of use at the
same time to encourage positive attitudes
towards the consumption of essential foods in
the development of boys. Also seeks to reach
those who are responsible for the feeding of
children via school lunch programs or catering
companies. They have distributed 14 000 units
throughout Spain in collaboration with the
different Independent Governments.
“Constantly at the
forefront of promising
topics in nutrition, the Danone Institutes
are committed to promote novel concepts in
nutrition. The definition of a novel concept in
nutrition is based on a new idea, a new paradigm
or a new hypothesis that has been proven and
established by rigorous studies. Novel concepts
in nutrition can be either in basic or applied
research. The importance of the novel concepts
in nutrition is judged by its impact on human
health, prevention of diseases, and new
possibilities in nutritional support.”
PROGRAMS OF RESEARCH SUPPORT
➜ The danone international prize for nutrition
Awarded every two years to a
researcher or research team
that has developed a novel
concept and advanced the
frontiers of human nutrition,
the Danone International Prize for Nutrition is today
recognised as one of the most distinguished scientific
prizes and as a key driver of innovative research in
the field of health and nutrition.
“Nutrition and health are inseparably combined both
in industrialized and developing countries. Excellent
nutrition research will best open opportunities to
improve nutrition and health. To stimulate and support
outstanding research activities a scientific prize is a very
good tool. The Danone International Prize for Nutrition
is renowned in the scientific community as well among
the public, and will again be awarded by “Danone
Institute International”, a not-for-profit organisation
with the mission of developing and disseminating
scientific knowledge about diet and nutrition for public
health. This important prize will be given to a researcher
or a research team for the development of a novel
concept in nutrition research and advancement of frontiers
in nutrition.”
➜ Leptin: weight management and beyond – experimental biology
2008 – asn presidential forum
Danone Institute International highlighted Leptin: Weight Management
and Beyond by supporting the Presidential Symposium of the annual
meeting of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), held in San Diego,
California, USA, at Experimental Biology 2008, one of the most important
scientific events of the year. Chaired by Jeffrey M. Friedman, M.D., Ph.D.,
winner of the 2007 Danone International Prize for Nutrition, this
symposium presented a selection of the most recent findings developed
by leading researchers. The program was based on the role of leptin in
the regulation of weight. Leptin, a hormone produced by the obese gene,
was discovered by Dr. Friedman’s group in 1995. The hormone plays a
key role in controlling appetite, energy expenditure and fat storage in
humans. Leptin’s weight-reducing effects depend on the hormone’s
interactions with receptor molecules on cells in the hypothalamus, a brain
region known to regulate food intake and body weight. Other experts in
this area participated on the panel for the symposium: Christos Mantzoros,
M.D., D.Sc. (Leptin in Humans: Lessons from Translational Research);
Sadaf Farooqi, Ph.D. (Genetic Basis of Human Obesity); and Joel Elmquist,
D.V.M., Ph.D. (Unravelling the Neural Circuits Underlying the Effects of Leptin
on Body Weight and Glucose Homeostasis). Proceedings of the symposium
are expected to be published in The Journal of Nutrition. This symposium
on Novel Concepts in Nutrition was the second of a series to be presented
biennially on the occasion of a major scientific congress.
➜ The biology of obesity: Laureate of DIPN 2007, Conference on line
and CD rom
Prof. Jeffrey Friedman was the first person to identify and explain the
function of leptin, a hormone secreted by fat cells that balances food
intake and energy expenditure.
For his pioneering role in
scientific research on obesity,
nutrition and food intake, in 2007
he was awarded the Danone
International Prize for Nutrition.
His prestigious conference is
available online, and a CD-ROM
is available upon request.
