St. Olavs hospital invests in top modern security solution
Sony Europe, Professional Solutions set out to transform St. Olavs Hospital surveillance system
by replacing and upgrading their current system to better handle their security needs in
partnership with Bravida, Scandinavia’s leading provider of technical installation and
maintenance services for buildings.
Background
St. Olavs Hospital is located in Trondheim and owned
by the Central Norway Regional Health Authority. The
hospital is integrated with the Norwegian University of
Science and Technology, offering patient treatment
and support as well as research and education for
health professionals. St. Olavs is the local hospital for
Sør-Trøndelag, but serves several regional and national
areas covering a total of 630,000 inhabitants. Over the
past few years, the hospital has been modernized,
including new buildings and a new organizational
structure. The entire project will be completed in
2015 and the hospital will then have a total area of
197,500 m2 and employ about 8,000 people.
Challenges
St. Olavs set out to become one of Norway’s most
modern hospitals. However, being originally housed in
an old building, several areas needed renovation and
renewal. St. Olavs former video security system was
also perceived to be outdated and hard to maintain.
In order to meet the needs for better surveillance of
buildings and outdoor areas, the ITV equipment was
replaced and upgraded to Sony digital solutions.

Solutions
Being one of Norway’s largest hospitals, St. Olavs is a busy
place with many people going in and out of the hospital
area. Now, with surveillance solutions from Sony, the hospital
is better equipped to manage the security both indoors and
outdoors.
Sony Solution
St. Olavs’ video security solution consists of 8 servers with RSM
advanced software and about 220 cameras, including the
models RZ25, CS50 and DF80. All equipment is IP and all the
new cameras are HD. A new knowledge center is under
construction and will also be in need of several new cameras.
The surveillance solution is delivered in partnership with
Bravida which has a local presence in order to facilitate and
support the solution whenever needed.
Why Sony Was Selected
Sony has 25 years of experience within the health sector
and St. Olavs has a long history of working with Sony, within
several product areas. Sony has already delivered and
installed an AV/IT solution, the first of its kind in Europe. The
solution makes it possible to store live videos and still images
from operating procedures and to share this with any center
in the world.

This history, combined with the consistent quality of the
solutions was key for choosing Sony as partner also within
video security. As part of the video security solution, St. Olavs
is now looking into new areas for camera usage, such as
monitoring of their technically advanced medicine transfer
system and documentation of new constructions with
time-lapse functionality.
In April 2012 Sony, Bravida and St. Olavs are collaborating in
the 22nd congress of the International Federation of Hospital
Engineering. The worldwide medical market will then have
the chance to learn more about surveillance solutions and
other new technologies.
