At the District Governor’s meeting at Rapid City on April 13, DG Willie Brown presented Hamiota Lion Elgin Rogers with the Hope Medal. At the District Governor’s meeting DG Willie Brown presented Lion Pete Oberlin with the Ben Ward fellowship award. Kandace Waldner, a Grade Six student at Green Acres Colony, was presented with a prize of $100 as the winner of the District Peace Poster Contest. The presentation was made by Chairman Lion Gord Kingdon on May 3rd. Kandace was congratulated by her sponsors, members of the Wawanesa Lions Club. District pins available T he Lions District Pins distribution has been taken over by Lion Don Martin of Wawanesa. There are 21 years of the Multiple District 5M Snowman pins available, some as far back as 1988. Also available are a small number of District 5M13 Pins of one form or another. If there are any Lions members in our District that still have an interest in Pin collecting, call Lion Don at 204-824-2457 or e-mail him at dmmart@mts.net Suggested cost is reasonable at 1 pin for $1 or 3 pins for $2 or any other reasonable offer. A list of the years and the number of pins on hand in each year can be emailed to anyone interested.

Morden Lions Club Eyeglass Recycling and Magnifier Project for Morden Library May is “Recycle For Sight” month for Lions Clubs (http://www.lionsclubs.org) all over world. Eyeglasses & sunglasses that people no longer have a use for, can be donated to “Lions Recycle For Sight” which will give someone in need of glasses a renewed opportunity to see and read. From Canada in 2011, 191,740 pairs of recycled glasses were sent to underdeveloped countries. The largest shipment was to Ghana where 55,900 pairs were distributed in 20 missions. In Canada, recycled eyeglasses are tested, packaged and distributed by The Canadian Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre (http://www.clerc.ca/) which is a joint program between the Lions of Calgary and the Calgary Correctional Centre. Locally, eyeglasses are collected by local Lions Clubs, packaged at the Lions Eye Bank office and then shipped to CLERC in Calgary. Morden Lions, for example have collected 10,598 pairs of glasses in the past 8 years. Lions in Miami and Winkler also collect and ship glasses. Collection bins are located at the Altona, Winkler and Morden branches of the South Central Regional Library, Focal Point Comprehensive Vision Centre in Morden and in Miami at Call Insurance Office or Miami Friendship Centre. Thanks for your support by dropping off your unwanted or not needed eyeglasses & sunglasses. Magnifier Project – Morden Library 16 magnifiers for Morden Library One of Lions main priorities is to improve quality of life by improving vision wherever possible. In keeping with that priority, an opportunity to help was identified at the Morden Library. Library patrons with reduced or low vision could benefit from having magnifiers available when reading library material. Magnifiers, valued at over $2500, were recently delivered to the library through a joint project shared by The Lions Eye Bank, Focal Point Comprehensive Vision Centre and the Morden Lions Club. The project also illustrates how the Lions Eye Bank’s Journey For Sight snowmobile ride fundraiser comes back to help the local community. Money raised in the Journey For Sight is used by the Eye Bank to cosponsor local vision related projects like the magnifier project in Morden. This year in January, 25 Morden & area snowmobile riders raised over $9100 for the Eye Bank. Library patrons will certainly benefit from having magnifiers available to view some of the smaller print materials. We welcome you Lions welcome new members, you can be a part of the world’s largest service organization. It doesn’t take a lot of an individual’s time but, as a group, a tremendous amount can be accomplished both locally in and around Morden and also all around the world helping those who are unable to have some of the basic necessities of life. We prefer you DO NOT just forward link to face book or skydrive photo albums. If doing so, identify which photos you would like us to download and provide cutline or story with your email submission.
