Dear Collectors 

Welcome to the May edition of the Stamp Bulletin and a glimpse at 

stamp issues to be released over the next few weeks. This edition 

will also focus on the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne instant 

stamp program – the largest ever undertaken – and the many stamp 

related products produced by Australia Post in support of the Games. 

Australia Post produced 17 instant stamp sheetlets, comprising 84 

individual stamps of the Australian Champions gold medallists, as 

well as the three special celebration sheetlets (Opening and Closing 

Ceremonies and the Most Memorable Moment). It was quite an 

undertaking and all those who participated made the success of the 

project possible. The Most Memorable Moment captured one of 

sports great achievements. Lifted by the roar of over 80,000 people, 

marathon runner Kerryn McCann ran the race of her life to win Gold 

for Australia at the Games. 

We have also produced a beautifully bound collection of all the 

gummed stamps issued under the Commonwealth Games banner. 

The Collection includes all sheetlets from the instant stamp program, 

the three celebration sheetlets, the offi cial stamp issue (the Logo 

stamp and the Silhouetted Athletes) including the miniature sheet. 

Complementing the stamp products is a complete range of collectables 

and souvenir items, featuring well-known icons associated with 

both Melbourne and the Commonwealth Games. 

Also in this edition we introduce a new international stamp issue and 

two new stamps designed for use with the Personalised Stamps 

service. We feature a special issue with Whales Down Under and 

introduce a new stamp issue for children – Postie Kate. There are 

a number of new products with this issue that are sure to delight 

someone you know! The stamp issue Soccer in Australia will coincide 

with the 18th FIFA World Cup to be played in Germany this year and 

features the fi rst circular miniature sheet to be produced by Australia 

Post. When you purchase any of the Soccer in Australia products,

Released in June will be stamp issues from Australian Territories 

(Christmas Island Heritage Buildings and Cocos (Keeling) Islands Coral

This year’s Australia Post Australian Legends 

Award recipient becomes part of a select group, 

which includes Sir Donald Bradman, Slim Dusty 

and Dame Joan Sutherland. The award, given each 

year at the offi cial Australia Day Lunch, comprises 

a set of gold replica stamps. 

Born in the Melbourne suburb of Camberwell in 

1934, Barry Humphries has delighted audiences 

for over 50 years by exposing the national psyche 

through characters like Sandy Stone and Sir Les 

Patterson. When Moonee Ponds housewife Edna 

Everage was presented to the world she went on 

to become one of the most recognised Australians 

abroad – and was given the title “Dame Edna” in 

1974 by Gough Whitlam. 

Barry Humphries began writing and performing in 

Melbourne University revues in the early 1950s. 

In 1959 he settled in London where he appeared 

in successful one-man shows and various stage 

productions. In 2000 Dame Edna was embraced 

by the American public in Dame Edna – The Royal 

Tour on Broadway, with the show being awarded 

a special Tony. Barry Humphries has authored 18 

books and has been awarded two honorary doctorates. 

He was admitted to the Order of Australia in 

1982.

LIGHTHOUSES 

OF THE 20TH CENTURY 

This issue follows the release of Lighthouses in 

Australia (2002) which focused on lighthouses built 

in the 18th and 19th centuries. Since 1775 there has 

been a remarkable array of lighthouses, especially in 

terms of their architecture and construction. 

There are some 400 lightstations around Australia 

today and all are fi tted with an automatic light. Many 

of the lightstations in service were built in the 20th 

century and the stamps for this issue feature fi ve of 

these remarkable structures.

immigrants during the 1860s, following the formation of the 

Football Association in London in 1863, and the circulation of

Whales have long been signifi cant in Australia. 

Mythology, oral history and archaeological 

evidence indicate that whales were important to 

Aboriginal people. They were hunted for close 

on two centuries by settlers since their arrival in 

the late 18th century. 

In Australia the whale industry has experienced 

a sea change over recent decades with attitudes 

shifting dramatically in the second half of the 

20th century. The country’s last whaling station, 

at Cheynes Beach in Western Australia, closed 

in 1978 and within a year of this the government 

announced its opposition to whaling in Australian 

waters. This magnifi cent animal has come to symbolise 

the ongoing battle for nature conservation.

olympics, held in torino, italy. 

The Winter Olympics, which were held in Torino, 

Italy, has given Australia its third ever Winter 

Olympic gold medal. 

Dale Begg-Smith won gold for Australia in the fast 

and furious moguls skiing event, which is part of 

the freestyle skiing program. This was the 21 year 

old’s fi rst Olympic Games and came after his rise 

to the rank of number two in the world in 2005. 

Born in British Columbia, Canada, Begg-Smith 

began competing for Australia in the 2003–2004 

competition season. In celebration, a sheetlet of 

10 x 50c stamps was produced and available within 

days of the win! Dale Begg-Smith has joined 

fellow Australian Winter Olympic gold medallists,

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands comprise two remote 

tropical coral atolls. The island reefs are abundant with 

marine life and feature both hard and soft corals. Coral 

reefs have a greater variety of life within them than 

any other oceanic ecosystem. Reef building hard corals 

are responsible for the most diverse of all marine 

communities.

This exhibition focuses on those Australians whose lives and achievements we have celebrated 

through the Australia Post Australian Legends Award, gold medallists instant stamps and the Face 

of Australia program. Until 1997 the only living people represented in their own right on Australian 

stamps were members of the Royal Family. That year the Australian Legends series commenced, 

with Sir Donald Bradman being the fi rst Australian to be celebrated on a stamp. Despite the strict 

policy precluding living Australians from being featured on stamps, there were many instances of 

living people in the backgrounds. While they were often unrecognisable, they are identifi able in the 

photographic source material. This exhibition also celebrates all those Australians, however blurred 

and distant, who have appeared on millions of stamps sent around the globe.
