15 august 2006 celebrates the centenary of the first issue of an Australian driving licence. The Model TT Truck (1917) was an affordable vehicle for ordinary people, and so popular with Australian farmers, it was dubbed the “squatter’s joy”. Holden’s FE model car (1956), with its modern lines, was selected as the official car for the Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956. It was also the first Australian motor vehicle to offer a station wagon as part of the range. The 1960s saw the advent of the very popular Morris 850 (1961), which was more commonly known as the Mini Minor. The Holden Sandman panel van (1976) was used as a recreational vehicle with special appeal for the surfing sub-culture. The 1980s saw the four-wheel drive vehicle (4WD) used for recreational use rather than just work. It is interesting to note that most of the 4WDs used today are owned by city-dwellers.
