Originally St Nicholas’ feast day was celebrated on the 6 December,
and was marked by exchanging presents. In the sixteenth and
seventeenth century the date was changed and Christmas Eve
became the time for gift-giving in European countries. Today
St Nicholas is the patron saint of the Dutch and Russian capitals,
Amsterdam and Moscow.
