In 2010 we continue our light-hearted Christmas Island Christmas
series, with Rob Kiely again applying his brush to the subject,
linking aspects of the island’s natural heritage to the tropical
Christmas theme.
In the 60-cent stamp design, the Golden Bosunbird (Phaethon
lepturus) surveys the island from above to fi nd a place at which
to deliver its Christmas gift. Elsewhere known as the White-tailed
Tropicbird, this seabird has a distinguishing golden hue to its plumage.
A black streak extends across each eye, and it has black bars on its
upper wings, but its long golden tail makes it most distinctive.
The $1.30 stamp design continues the narrative of the Christmas gift
delivery. In the foreground sits a gift bound with the vine Hoya aldrichii
and the Ridley’s Orchid, Brachypeza archytas, the Bosunbird has
carried in its beak. The hoya vine has clusters of small pink fl owers.
Ridley’s Orchid grows low on the trunks of large trees on Christmas
Island, with stems of around 15–30 centimetres.
