Dear Collectors,
As winter begins I invite readers to take a step into the past and
imagine the romance of ocean travel, with Bon Voyage. The
designs use the dramatic original graphic designs that enticed
travellers to and from Australia in the early to mid-twentieth
century. I am also pleased to introduce a new product with
this issue, a poster collection featuring six beautiful A3, full
colour posters suitable for framing.
At the end of June we will mark the 150th anniversary of
the Eureka Stockade. The events of Eureka were the climax of
several years of dissatisfaction on the Victorian goldfi elds, and
have become a symbol of democratic protest and national
identity. Our designs use historic images to call to mind the
spirit of the day, and to remind us that 150 years on, the events
of Eureka can still spark debate and inspire a nation.
In July, Australian Impressions pays tribute to aspects of
Australia that are loved as much by local tourists as they are by
visitors from overseas. Our unique wildlife, beautiful beaches
and world heritage sites, each in their own way make indelible
impressions on the Australia psyche.
Also in July, Christmas Island Underwater showcases the
spectacular underwater life to be discovered in the waters
around Christmas Island. The sheetlet design presents a true
window into the underwater world.
As I announced earlier in the year, we will be issuing a
stamp each time an Australian individual or team wins a gold
medal at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. In this Bulletin we
preview our special Gold Medallists offer. As they did in 2000,
these stamps will capture the excitement of the competition
and spread the gold medal winner’s pride throughout
Australia, a role they will again play in 2004.
Collectors who want to ensure their collections include a
complete set of Gold Medallist stamps will want to take up our
special offer which is covered on pages 18-19 of this Bulletin.
Registering for the 2004 Australian Gold Medallists special
offer is the easiest and most cost effective way to collect Gold
Medallists stamps.
Until next time,
BON VOYAGE
150th Anniversary Murray River Shipping
The stamps and associated products in this
Bon Voyage issue beautifully capture the
mystique and allure of 20 th century ocean
liner travel to and from Australia
The designs draw on stylish artwork from
original advertising posters to evoke the
romance and excitement associated with
ocean travel.
The four stamps in this issue give us a
glimpse of tourist ships in the early to mid 20 th
century. Many fabulous posters were designed
from the 1920s advertising the delights of
ocean travel. During this period Australia was
a destination for many, including migrants,
and more adventurous travellers from Europe.
At the same time Australians were increasingly
travelling abroad, particularly to the United
Kingdom.
The designer
The stamps are designed by Melinda Coombs
whose previous stamp designs for Australia
Post include Endangered Birds (June, 1998) and
the Joint Issue with Sweden (August, 2001).
Cover image by permission of the National Library of Australia
Associated products
As well as the four gummed stamps and a
booklet of ten x 50c, this issue also includes
a fi rst day cover, stamp pack, set of four
maximum cards, and a poster collection.
The poster collection features six A3 full
colour travel posters and includes fascinating
information about the shipping lines and
the ships.
Priced at just $12.95 for six A3 posters
suitable for framing, the Bon Voyage poster
collection would make a wonderful gift for
anyone with a love of travel or an eye for
stylish graphic design.
AAT ANARE Station First Day Covers
The majority of Australian Antarctic Territory
(AAT) stamps are used by Australians stationed
at one of the four ANARE stations in the AAT.
About 120 Australians spend a full year at
one of the stations, isolated for months at a
time until the supply ships arrive.
Philatelic mail is not sent to the Antarctic.
Orders and covers submitted for postmarking
are processed in Australia to refl ect the supply
ships’ arrival dates at each of the four bases.
Each station has its own unique pictorial
postmark. New everyday and fi rst day of issue
designs were produced for Macquarie Island
and the three base stations. The new designs
were illustrated in Bulletin 273 (January-
February 2004).
The fi rst day of issue for each station is the
date the supply ship arrives at the station. AAT
ANARE station covers are produced for these
dates. For 2002-2003 all ships arrived safely at
the respective stations as listed below. These
station covers are the fi rst use of the new FDI
postmark designs previewed in Bulletin 273,
Eureka 1854–2004
The Eureka Stockade came after years of
increasing dissatisfaction on the Victorian
goldfi elds and a growing desire for more
representative and responsible government.
The events of Eureka and the public’s
response to those events were perhaps the most
important early steps on the path to the robust,
direct democracy Australia is today.
The issue
This commemorative issue of two stamps and
a miniature sheet also includes fi rst day covers,
a stamp and coin cover, a set of two maximum
cards and a prestige booklet.
The prestige booklet comprises four stamp
panes interleaved with colour illustrations and
text telling the story of the stockade. The stamp
panes are two pairs of 50c stamps, one pair of
$2.45 stamps, and one se-tenant pair. Priced at
just $10.95 it would make a great gift.
The stamp and coin cover illustrated on the
following pages features a spectacular $5.00
coloured coin with the Eureka fl ag in blue
8
dd Month YYYY
and nugget in gold. The uncirculated coin is
exclusive to Post’s stamp and coin cover.
The designs
The 50c stamp features a representation of the
Eureka fl ag, which at the time was called the
fl ag of the Southern Cross.
The fl ag has become a symbol of democratic
rights and freedoms and is identifi ed as a fl ag of
the people. The original holds pride of place in
the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery.
The Eureka fl ag was fi rst fl own to rally
people to Bakery Hill on 29 November 1854,
the “Monster Meeting” of the Ballarat Reform
League. The fl ag represents the Southern Cross,
with white stars on a dark blue background.
The Ballarat Times reported that “there is no
fl ag in Europe, or in the civilised world half so
beautiful”.
The fl ag is constructed of very fi ne blue
woollen fabric with a high sheen that gives a
silk-like appearance. The cross is made of pieces
of cotton twill and the stars of fi ne cotton lawn.

The $2.45 stamp uses an image of Peter
Lalor, the man who led the diggers at the
stockade (La Trobe Collection/State Library
of Victoria).
Peter Lalor (1827 – 1889) was born in Ireland
and trained as an engineer before emigrating to
Victoria in 1852. In 1853 he left Melbourne for
the Ovens gold diggings, and in 1854 moved to
Ballarat. He joined the Ballarat Reform League
when political tension on the fi elds was high,
and later emerged as the leader of the diggers.
At Bakery Hill, Lalor called on the men to
swear loyalty to their new fl ag. He was seriously
wounded in the attack at the stockade.
He was in hiding in Geelong for a time,
but within a year he returned to Ballarat and
was elected unopposed as a Member of the
Legislative Assembly for North Grenville, a
Ballarat seat.
The stamp design also uses Lalor’s signature
and a sketch by Charles Alphonse Doudiet
(ca.1832 – 1872), a Swiss-born Canadian who
participated in the Eureka rebellion. The sketch,
Swearing allegiance to the Southern Cross 1854,
shows the diggers taking the oath on Bakery
Hill on 30 November 1854.
Miniature sheet
The miniature sheet features the diggers’ oath
and two more sketches by Charles Alphonse
Doudiet. These sketches, from the Ballarat Fine
Art Gallery, have been important in establishing
the events at Eureka.
At left is Eureka Riot 17th October 1854,
which resulted in the burning of Bentley’s hotel
where James Scobie had been drinking before
he was killed, and on the right, Eureka Slaughter
3rd December 1854. A digger’s licence is printed
in the bottom left of the miniature sheet.
29 June 2004
The designer
The stamps are designed by Janet Boschen
of the Australia Post Design Studio. Her
previous designs include the Centenary of
the High Court (September 2003) and Bush
Tucker (September 2002).
Every year millions of Australians spend their
holidays reconnecting with our unique island
continent. This stamp issue pays tribute to
our unique wildlife – our love affair with the
beach and our world heritage areas – aspects
of Australia that leave indelible impressions
on our hearts and minds. These impressions
of Australia draw tourists to our shores, and
call us home, no matter how long or how far
we roam.
The stamps
$1.00 Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus)
The koala is one of the marsupial species
that developed exclusively on the Australian
continent, probably during the time when
Australia was drifting northward, gradually
12
separating from what was to become the
Antarctic, about 45 million years ago. The
modern koala is the single living representative
of its genus and species Phascolarctos cinereus,
and a universally recognised and much loved
symbol of Australia.
It’s hard to believe that the koala was once
hunted, almost to extinction, for its fur. Public
outcry in Australia and around the world led
to the koala being declared a protected species
in the 1930s, but at that point it was believed
only a few thousand animals remained.
Today a national koala conservation strategy
addresses the management issues facing one of
Australia’s most high profi le species in all the
states and territories in which the koala occurs
naturally.

$1.00 Little penguin (Eudyptula minor)
Penguins are fl ightless seabirds that are only
found in the Southern Hemisphere. Little
penguins are found in small colonies around
the southern coastlines of Australia and its
islands (a sub-speciesis found in New Zealand
where they are known as “blue penguins”).
The bird’s other name, “fairy penguin” is
better suited to the magical sight of these miniature
treasures walking up the shore and back
to their burrows at dusk.
Although the best known spot for viewing
these birds is the Penguin Parade at Victoria’s
Phillip Island Nature Park, breeding colonies
can be found along the southern coast of
Australia, as far north as South Solitary Island
NSW (near Coffs Harbour) as far west as the
Shoalwater Island Group near Perth WA, and as
far south as Bruny Island TAS.
The outback looms large in the Australian
psyche, but about 83% of us live less than 50 km
from the coast. Our coastline stretches some
36,000 km around Australia, from secret coves
to developed holiday resort beaches the local
beach is a place anyone can go to enjoy the sun,
sea and sand.
The beach is surfi ng and sandcastle building,
sun-safe sun worshiping and people watching,
not to mention the restorative qualities of the
sea air and the fun of a game of beach cricket.
Australians love to spend their holidays at
the beach, and Queensland is home to some of
the best known beaches in the world. The beach
featured on this stamp is instantly recognisable
as Main Beach, Gold Coast, Queensland.
It speaks to us not only of sunny days, sand
and surf, but also of the promise of exotic
nightlife, a swag of restaurants and shopping
for every taste and budget.
2004 Australian Gold Medallists
In 2000 Australia Post made philatelic and
Olympic Games history when it issued a
sheetlet of Gold Medallists stamps each time
an Australian team or individual won a Gold
Medal.
This year, Australia Post will again celebrate
each Gold Medal won by an Australian
individual or team during the Athens 2004
Olympic Games.
The template for our 2004 stamp, which will
be produced in sheetlets of ten, is shown above.
By building and improving on the integrated
production and delivery processes established
in 2000, we will be able to deliver offset printed
sheetlets to capital cities and major regional
centres within two days of the Medal Ceremony
(cutting a day off the 2000 offset schedule).
Associated products
There are no fi rst day covers, national fi rst
day of issue postmarks, maximum cards or
stamp packs for this issue because of licensing
requirements.
We will produce local fi rst day of issue
postmarks that will be available in some post
offi ces in all states and territories. Customers
are encouraged to make their own fi rst day
covers, either using the blank fi rst day cover
designed for the Gold Medallists issue, or their
own private cover designs. A list of locations
with local fi rst day of issue postmarkers will
be published in the August-September 2004,
