Dear Collectors
In this edition of the Stamp
Bulletin Australia we present the
fi nal stamp issues of what has
been a very eventful year. We
have received a record number of
requests for subjects and themes
for consideration for future
stamp issues and welcome all of
these especially those from our
Bulletin readers. This is a great
refl ection of the level of interest in
Australian stamps from not only
collectors, but from those in the
present areas of commerce and
from the general public. It also
ensures a varied and interesting
program.
There are three stamp issues
represented in this edition, which
are to be released at the end of
October. The fi rst is a joint issue
with South Korea, celebrating
2011 as a year of friendship and
for which a number of events
have been held throughout the
year. The stamps include an
aspect of each country’s cultural
heritage and the issue also
presents an Australian philatelic
fi rst – the inclusion of a quick
response (QR) code inside the
large stamp pack. By using a
Smartphone to scan the QR code,
an application on the phone will
allow you to access a multimedia
fi le presented on the Australia
Post website. The media fi le is a
fi lm of a traditional South Korean
musician.
For collectors of Christmas
Island Christmas stamps there
are two new additions in this
year’s program. “Snorkelling
Santa” emerges from the water
to greet a couple of Christmas
Island crabs, and there’s also a
Christmas Island cracker pull.
These stamps are a favourite with
children and are all about the
fun and enjoyment of Christmas
festivities. For those wanting to
use traditional or other secular
Christmas stamp designs three
new card rate stamps are
available. We are also releasing
our fi rst Christmas postal and
numismatic cover, complete with
a coloured Christmas tree coin
from Perth Mint. There is a range
of postage-paid Christmas card
packs using this year’s stamp
designs available at participating
postal outlets.
For those with a passion for golf
we have produced a range of
postage-paid postcard packs
featuring some of Australia’s
premier golf courses. Children will
love our new range of colourful
souvenir stamp sheets. These
stamp sheets make a great
Christmas gift, along with our soft
and cuddly plush golf buddy on
page 12.
On 2 November a very special
stamp issue, Remembrance Day
II.II.II, will remind Australians to
refl ect on the sacrifi ce of all those
who have served in times of
confl ict. The signifi cance of the
date sequence is also important
and will not occur again until
2111. Also to be released are three
prestige covers and a special
stamp medallion in a presentation
folder.
Finally, a reminder to order
your copy of the 2011 Annual
Collection of Australian Stamps.
This year we present a special
sheetlet using the Flood Relief
stamps released in January. I
would also like to wish all our
readers and their families a very
Merry Christmas and a safe and
happy New Year.
1704004 Joint first day cover
Following a visit to Australia by President Lee Myung-bak in
March 2009, this year has been declared a Year of Friendship
between Australia and South Korea to mark the 50th
anniversary of diplomatic relations. The 2011 Year of Friendship
builds on the professional, community and institutional
links between Australia and Korea to enhance mutual
understanding, friendship and goodwill. It also helps to project
a well-informed, contemporary image of Australia in Korea.
The Australia–Korea relationship was forged during the Korean
War and diplomatic relations were established in 1961. It has
now developed into a broad-based partnership, including
substantial trade and investment links. Affi rming the two
countries’ common purpose in actively working together and
with other countries are forums such as APEC, the ASEAN
Regional Forum, the East Asia Summit and the G20. These
advance the stability, development and security of the East
Asia region, particularly in the face of the international fi nancial
crisis. The two countries have been cooperating to achieve
middle-power leadership in the international community by
raising voices together at the G20 as well as on climate change
and other issues.
60c Haegeum musician
This stamp features a woman shown playing a haegeum,
a traditional Korean musical instrument. This two-stringed
vertical instrument dates back to the Goryeo Dynasty (918–
1392). It is played with a hardwood bow strung with horsehair
that is inserted between two strings attached to a resonating
soundbox made of paulownia wood. Two twisted silk strings
attached to the bottom of the soundbox pass over a small
wooden bridge and up the long bamboo neck to large pegs.
$1.65 Didgeridoo musician
The didgeridoo is a wind instrument that originated in
northern Australia at least 1,500 years ago. It is composed
of a eucalyptus hardwood branch hollowed out by termites
over time. Traditionally played by men for ceremonial and
recreational purposes, The droning sound is produced by
a vibration of the lips while using a special
This year’s Christmas issue includes two stamps with a religious
theme and three that focus on the more secular elements of
Christmas. The beautiful religious stamps show two episodes
from the Biblical story. In the 55c stamp the Virgin Mary,
dressed in her traditional deep blue robe, gazes tenderly at
the newborn baby Jesus. In the $1.50 stamp, the three Kings
or Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, are shown
journeying from the east to Bethlehem in order to worship the
Christ Child. They are dressed in rich robes as befi ts their royal
station. The guiding star can be seen in the night sky.
55c Christmas tree 55c Gift 60c Star
The three secular stamps offer an alternative to those who
celebrate the festive season but who would prefer not to
focus on the religious aspect of Christmas. Many Australians
identify Christmas with the Christmas tree and the excitement
of opening elaborately wrapped presents early on Christmas
morning. The decorative Christmas star is a reference to the
bright star that the Wise Men followed from the east.
Remembrance Day 11.11.11
Remembrance Day, initially known as Armistice Day, marks
the anniversary of the armistice on 11 November 1918, which led
to the end of World War I – the Great War. Remembrance is
observed through one minute’s silence at the 11th hour on the
11th day of the 11th month in honour of those who have died or
been wounded in all theatres of war.
The signifi cance of the commemoration throughout allied
nations increased in 1920, with the return to Britain of the
remains of an unknown soldier. Felled on the battlefi elds of
the Western Front, he was interred with full military honours.
At the end of World War II, the Australian government agreed
with Britain’s proposal to rename the annual observation
Remembrance Day, extending the commemoration to those
who have served in all military confl icts.
The most notable symbol of Remembrance Day is the
red poppy, or Flanders poppy (Papaver rhoeas). It gained
resonance for being among the fi rst plants to bloom on the
battlefi elds of northern France and Belgium during the Great
War. For soldiers, the red petals represented the blood of their
fallen comrades.
The French YMCA secretary suggested selling Remembrance
Day poppies to raise funds for the benefi t of war widows,
orphans and veterans in need. Originally, the silk poppies were
made by children in orphanages in devastated areas of France,
with part of the raised funds going to support the children. The
poppies were fi rst sold in Australia in 1921 and the tradition has
since continued in conjunction with war commemorations.
