Garden of Happiness by Erika Tamar

FAVORITE CHARACTER
Our favorite character is Marisol
because she is curious about the
garden of happiness. She is a
bright, young girl who always is
curious about what the people are
doing. She finds out that they are
making a garden. Then she decides
to plant something. Next she finds
a little space of dirt to plant her
seed. Nobody knows what she has
planted. One day she sees a big,
yellow sunflower! A couple more
days pass and it is taller than her!
Marisol loves her sunflower. She is
now very happy with her plant.

FAVORITE PART
Our favorite part was the ending because it was a
big surprise! Marisol got sad about her big, bright
sunflower dyeing in the winter but then one day, the
teenagers painted a great big field of sunflowers on
the wall! People were crowding the wall on the street
like a holiday. Marisol was so happy she danced,
laughed and clapped her hands! She had a great big
smile on her face!

Our favorite setting was the garden. The garden of
happiness is basically the whole setting. Everyone
plants some cool plants and they have taken the
whole entire space of the garden. When Marisol
wants to plant her mystery seed she can’t find any
space! But then she finds a tiny place to plant her
seed. Her mystery seed turns into a great big
sunflower and she becomes a great planter.

Jessie: My connection to the text is
when I planted a garden in my backyard.
We kept the garden by our pool and
rabbits kept on eating our garden.
Marisol`s sunflower started to die in the
cold winter just like my garden started to
die because of the rabbits.
Cameron: My connection to the text is
that my neighbors have a huge garden!
They give us veggies all the time in the
summer. They also let us pick green
beans. We pretend that they are magic
beans just like Marisol had a mystery
seed.

We could tell that Marisol
was sad about her
sunflower dying because
she started to whine and
cry. She was also to sad to
go to the empty lot where
the garden used to be. For
a whole week she wouldn’t
even take a peek at where
her sunflower used to be.
INFERENCE
We could tell that
Marisol was happy
and not sad anymore
because the
teenagers painted a
mural of a field of
sunflowers. She
started to dance and
she had a great big
smile on her face.
