MISSION STATEMENT
The Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘N Community Foundation strives to meet
the educational, social, health and cultural needs of our community by
offering unique resources and fi nancial support to local youth-oriented
organizations.
The Foundation is dedicated to supporting and developing programs
that benefi t the children of North Carolina. Through partnerships with
committed organizations and individuals, the Foundation will work to
improve the health, educational and social opportunities in the lives of
our young people, as they are the key to the long-term well-being of our
community.
With ongoing support from annual special events and the corporate
community, the Foundation has funded scholarship programs, youth
hockey, educational and literacy efforts, children’s health programs,
the arts and other children-related initiatives.
Annually, the Foundation provides cash and in-kind donations
totaling about $1.5 million to charitable and educational programs.
Every member of the Hurricanes organization is actively involved in
community activities. The Hurricanes take great pride in the ability to
have a positive impact in our state.
Dear Hurricanes fans and friends:
In February, four members of our team traveled to Vancouver to take part in one of the world’s
biggest sporting events, representing their home countries at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
When Eric Staal, Tim Gleason, Tuomo Ruutu and Joni Pitkanen came home to Raleigh, all
four had earned Olympic medals. While we all felt great pride seeing our players with medals
around their necks, that pride only increased when those men allowed us to put their prized
possessions on display at the RBC Center. In doing so, they not only shared their achievement
with our fans, but also they provided an important opportunity to raise needed funds for local
children’s organizations. Each fan who had his or her picture taken with the four medals made a
contribution to the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘N Community Foundation.
The Olympic medal photo opportunity was one of the many creative ways the Kids ‘N Community
Foundation offered interactive and unique fundraising opportunities in 2009-10, allowing the
Foundation to donate cash grants to more deserving non-profi t children’s organizations than
ever before. In these tough economic times, those funds are more instrumental than ever for
the organizations that they benefi t, as we continue to strive to improve the health, education
and underserved population needs of children in our community.
The following report outlines some of the community outreach efforts designed and
implemented by the Hurricanes and the Kids ‘N Community Foundation during the 2009-
10 season. The Foundation awarded $458,374 in cash grants to 52 different children’s
organizations this year, and made more than 600 in-kind donations to area schools, churches
and non-profi ts to assist their respective fundraising efforts. Our Hockey is for Everyone team,
the Capital City Crew, successfully completed its inaugural season, and the Pick Up a Book and
Read program expanded into Halifax County, reaching even more students in our state.
The success of our community efforts would not be possible without the support and
commitment of the players, coaches and staff of the Hurricanes. Just as importantly, we are
grateful for the tremendous generosity of our community partners, whose dedication and
contributions allow us to continue working to improve the lives of local children and their
families. Thank you for your continued support of the Carolina Hurricanes and the Kids ‘N
Community Foundation.
CASH DONATIONS
The Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘N Community Foundation has contributed over
$9 million in cash and in-kind donations to local non-profi t organizations since
the team moved to North Carolina in 1997. Thanks to the continued support
of players, coaches, front offi ce staff, corporate sponsors and the generous
fan base who participated in successful fundraisers, the Kids ‘N Community
Foundation donated $458,374 in cash grants to 52 different children’s
charities and foundations during the 2009-10 season. Grant funds allow
deserving non-profi t organizations to continue bettering the lives of children
and their families in our community.
Each monetary grant must serve local youth programs in the area of health,
education or underserved population development. To ensure that grant funds
are used appropriately, all grant recipients must defi ne how the cash grant
will be used, provide updates on the progress of funded programs and be
willing to host on-site visits.
“We are so grateful for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation and all
the support they’ve given to our families. Our families have a lot
of medical expenses, and to have an event where they can come
and watch there children play on a team where they don’t have to
be stressed about the fi nances, it is such a blessing. We are just
so grateful for the Carolina Hurricanes and the Kids ‘N Community
St. Baldrick’s Night
Carolina Hurricanes
players, staff and
fans raised funds and
awareness for the St.
Baldrick’s Foundation.
Professional barbers
were on hand to shave
heads on the front
lawn, and in exchange
for losing their locks,
fans received two
tickets to the game
that night. John
Forslund commentated
Tripp Tracy and Chuck
Kaiton’s head shaving
during the game’s
intermission, with Scott Walker, Erik Cole,
Niclas Wallin, Tim Gleason and Andrew
Alberts joining the fun by shaving their
heads for St. Baldrick’s.
Mentoring Through Sports
The Carolina Hurricanes partnered with
the Halifax County school system to offer
Hurricanes-themed educational programs
to elementary and middle school children.
Nearly 450 3rd-5th graders took advantage
of the Hurricanes’ Pick Up a Book and
Read incentive reading program totaling
326,013 pages read over a six week period.
Participating students were treated to a
Carolina Hurricanes game, an assembly
hosted by Stormy and incentive prizes.
Fans have their heads shaved on the front lawn to support St. Baldrick’s.
Erik Cole, Scott
Walker, and
Andrew Alberts
shaved their heads
for St. Baldrick’s.
Mentoring through Sports also provided
Electronic Shadowing to middle school
students, allowing them the opportunity
to “shadow” a Carolina Hurricanes
player through e-mail correspondence.
Participating Hurricanes players offered
answers to questions posed by Halifax
County students and also provided some
of their own personal life experiences
which helped them achieve their dreams of
playing in the NHL.
“Sometimes you get caught up thinking about wins and losses and ice time in
hockey. For us to get out and support what’s going on here makes us realize
what really matters. So, it’s nice to put a smile on kids’ faces.”
– Tom Kostopoulos on his visit to UNC Children’s Hospital
Carolina Hurricanes players visited hospitalized children at REX Hospital, UNC Children’s Hospital, Duke Children’s Hospital
and WakeMed.
Holiday Helpers
On December 14, 2009, the team split
up after practice and headed out to REX
Hospital, UNC Children’s Hospital, Duke
Children’s Hospital, and WakeMed Hospital
to bring smiles to hospitalized children.
The players visited with patients, signed
autographs, took pictures and left them
with some Hurricanes goodies.
Players who did not go to the hospitals lent
a hand to those in need with the annual
Target shopping trip. Erik Cole, Chad
LaRose, Stephane Yelle, and Aaron Ward
treated four deserving kids from Durham
Nativity School and StepUp Ministry to
holiday shopping. The Carolina Hurricanes
donated a $150 gift card to each player
to spend on the child, but similar to years
past, each player chipped in extra money to
ensure that the kids had plenty of holiday
gifts to share with their family.
During the holiday season, some of the
players’ wives accompanied volunteers from
the Carolina Hurricanes and RBC Center
to six senior centers around the Triangle.
Fruit baskets and individual gift bags
were hand delivered to the residents of the
centers. Volunteers and wives played Bingo
with the residents who were competing for
prizes including tickets to a game and other
Carolina Hurricanes items.
Player Appearances & Special Causes
Despite the commitment of a seven-month
season, Hurricanes players work public
understand the importance of giving back.
Brandon Sutter and Brett Carson made
additional $5000 donation from the
this year by making 193
appearances at schools,
churches, community
events, hospitals and
different charitable
organizations. The Ice
is contagious, and he
made sure to share it
everywhere he went.
Ron the Ref
Ron the Ref, a familiar face
at every home game, has been with the
organization since it came to North
Carolina. Ron hosts activities and
promotions during games and at Cool
season, the Eye Care Associates
Storm Squad rallied support at
This year, the Carolina Hurricanes’
Young girls spent a day with
the Eye Care Associates Storm
Hurricanes players, coaches, broadcasters
Hurricanes U all they need to know about
hockey. The fall and winter sessions are
comprised of three classroom sessions
geared toward individuals who are new to
the sport. Students get to meet a player,
break down game fi lm in the Canes’ locker
room with a coach and skate on the RBC
Center Ice. The Graduate Course is made
up of three meetings for students who have
more hockey knowledge. In this course,
students learn more of the behind-thescenes
business practices of running an
organization, including contract details
Since February 2006, CYAH has
provided monetary sponsorship
and a visible presence in the
local community to encourage
the growth of hockey at all skill
levels. Through a partnership
with the Raleigh Youth Hockey
Association (RYHA), CYAH has
a AAA team at the highest level
of youth hockey. The Tier 1
teams at each age level wear
called the Junior Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes involvement
CYAH has maintained great partnerships
with in-line hockey leagues, such as
Central Carolina Hockey and the Carolina
also added the Triangle Special Hockey
Association, a hockey league created
to educate, motivate and encourage
individuals who have developmental or
physical disabilities to participate in the
sport of ice hockey. Through these outreach
