“Getting the Point” from the Old Swim Coach – Dave Barney
I am really looking forward to returning to Chikopi this
summer and linking up again with some familiar faces. It has been
a dry winter and spring here in New Mexico, but my high school
swim season was extremely productive. We won our 32 nd and 33 rd
state championships in February, set a new state record in girls 200
freestyle relay (1:36.44) and had four individual All America swims.
How sweet it was. But summer beckons and so does camp, so with
that in mind, I thought I would pass on a little tip for all the
swimmers: Anyone who has ever swum competitively knows that all
the strokes are comprised of many minute details, each of which
(however large or small) is designed to enable you to move through
the negative properties of water at a faster rate.
From the very beginning you have probably been taught to align your body in the so-called
streamlined position on all starts and turns. For freestylers and backstrokers especially, that means
placing one hand on top of another at the tip end of your stretch or streamline, if you will. Here’s
where this little point of emphasis comes in, and, because it is so subtle, it is easy to overlook it. Be
sure to place your handedness hand and thus strongest arm (most people are right handed) on the
bottom of the overlapped hands. The bottom/stongest hand and arm is the combination you want
to have in position to initiate the pulling process. If it is incorrectly positioned on top, it will have to
slide off the bottom hand and slice through the water to initiate the pulling phase of the stroke. If
that happens, you will have missed the opportunity to get right into the stroke with plenty of water
on your strongest hand. It’s a small point, granted, but the larger point is that swimming is, as I
have mentioned, made up of all these so-called fine points. Unlike poker, this is the one moment
when you should deal from the bottom of the deck, so to speak. Try it out. Pass it on to your
teammates. When I see you in July, we’ll take a look at some other fine points of stroke.
Your Evening Program Director – AAron Fewkes
I can’t wait for June 29 th when all the fun begins. I
was a member of the Chikopi Team in 2009, and I am
thrilled to be returning again this summer, to work along
side, Bob, Joe, Les, Rob, both Dave’s, Dave MacNeil and
Dave Barney. What I am most looking forward to are the
Chikopi evening activities. From Saturday nights at the
movies, to the now famous Sunday after dinner game of
SPEEEEEEEEEDBALL! Campfires with friends new and
old, cabin challenges, capture the flag, skit night and talent
night. I remember it all like it was yesterday, walking down
to the sauna with Ibad, (a legend), and several other
counselors and campers to jump in the lake to cool off
before bed – or before the by invitation only dance parties
in “Cabin 8 Hotel”! In addition to the evening activities, the
sports classes, team comp, inspection and making new
friends from around the world stand out as fond
recollections. I’m looking forward to making a fresh set of
memories this summer with the new and returning campers
and staff. If you’re attending camp this summer, add me on
Facebook and send me a note – I’d love to hear from you –
otherwise, see everyone in a few weeks!
Team of Coaches – Les & Jenn MacDougall
As another school year begins to wind down
Jenn and I are excited to be helping in various sports
and aspects at the camp. Jenn is finishing with a 6/7
split class and I have been teaching mostly Autism and
Core French. We coached a Middle School Girls
Basketball team to two finals (all but one player had
played on a team before). Similarly, we want to work
with you at improving at Basketball, Canoeing,
Ultimate and Track and Field. Our philosophy for
Chikopi sports is that if you are willing to improve we
can help. If you have the desire to become a better
all around athlete this summer you are in the right
spot. One of my goals is to make all of us better in the
Canoes as it is an important part of Chikopi.
Chikopi Football Program - by Coach Dave MacNeil
For over 90 years, Chikopi has been the camp where kids from all over the world attend to
learn how to play new sports and further develop their skills to excel in the sports they already
know and love. I am very proud to be a part of Chikopi particularly the football program.
As a Chikopi camper and then counselor since 1986, I have had the privilege of learning
many different sports disciplines from some great Chikopi coaches. Using the experience I gained,
from playing football in High school and for the University of Guelph, I now have the opportunity to
impart my knowledge and enthusiasm for the game of American “football” to new and returning
campers. Many Chikopi campers are new to the game and quickly learn the basics in a noncontact
environment and love it.
The Chikopi “Front Field” is the main athletic area for football, soccer and dodge-ball. It is
named after a former University of Michigan football star/assistant coach and long time Chikopi
football Coach, Wally Weber. Wally coached at Camp Chikopi for decades and was a true
Chikopi “man.”
The football classes start with the basics, rules of the game, origins of the game, differences
between Canadian and American football. Then we move onto the basic strategy of the game, first
downs, offense and defense, etc. A typical lesson will involve some theory, we will then move on
to practicing the basic skills of throwing a football, running with a football, kicking and punting a
football. The more precise skills of tackling and blocking are not generally taught, as we have a
non-contact environment, but occasionally, if we have an exceptional group, we will expand the
lessons to be familiar with the proper techniques of blocking and tackling.
Each summer we host a Punt, Pass and Kick competition, in which all campers have the
opportunity to see how far they can punt, pass and kick a football in a battle for the title of, ‘PPK
Champion.” The competition is always very close.
We also play what we call “CFL” or “Chikopi Football League”, it is a variant of American
football. The rules change once the ball is snapped, you can throw the ball back and forward
many times until you are touched and/or score. This is a favorite activity for the campers at the
end of lessons, team comp activities and for evening pick up games.
Pair Of Aces – Swim Team Coaches – Trent & Teresa McNicol
As we move from our winter hibernation base and stretch our necks out to the spring
weather, we start to dream of the times we will hit the fresh crisp water of Ahmic lake.
As the camp swim coach, I actually think about that everyday, well everyday I’m not in
Hawaii at training camp. Every year I am drawn back to Chikopi for the same reason. Many would
think it’s the beautiful outdoors or the evening sunsets, stories by the fire and timed baseball. But
actually, what draws me back each year is the faces. Faces of the campers that have been there
before, and the new ones experiencing Chikopi for the first time. All eager to learn what’s new in
the world of swimming, how to reach your goals and strive towards your dreams. Training in the
crisp clear waters of Ahmic Lake, for the athletes, is a freedom that you don’t get in a pool. In the
lake you can focus primarily on yourself and your strokes, learning to glide effortlessly from stroke
to stroke with each passing meter.
There are in fact two parts to my job; as
well as swimming I incorporate a great deal of
fitness into the training. With regards to the
latter I like to delegate, thus giving me more
time to focus on the waterside of swimming. My
wife, Teresa, enjoys challenging the guys to
elevate their strength and flexibility to a new
level. As a firefighter, she herself maintains a
very high level of strength and cardio fitness.
Having been a personal trainer for the past 18
years, she passes along her knowledge with
challenges that all the senior males love trying
to attain.
We are both looking forward to putting you through the paces again this year and also yearn
for that first dip into Chikopi’s waters. Soon you all soon.
Heading Up This Years Team Comp is Coach and Staff Member – Joe Menter
I hope everyone is as excited as I am to get
up to Camp and jump into the lake and run around
on the fields. This year’s team comp activities will
prove to be another fun and exciting display of
athleticism, competitiveness, and sportsmanship.
The championship events will feature some of the
favorites such as the swim meet, kayak relay,
scavenger hunt, timed baseball and RAMBO. The
dual comp events will feature everything from
basketball to lacrosse to soccer and volleyball. This
is a great time to show off all of the skills you will
learn in morning classes.
With the leadership of veteran counselors and the creative ideas of new staff, this year’s
team comp will be full of energy. See you on the “Front Field!”
Swimming Plans for the Summer – Coach Rob Winograd
A major emphasis will be placed on open
water freestyle. We will take advantage of the
lake to run through open water race strategies
such as starts, drafting and finishes as well as
conditioning in preparation for the various races
that we conduct through out the summer.
Morning classes will emphasize proper stroke
mechanics in all the competitive disciplines.
Drills and feedback will make up the first half of
class, while a short aerobic conditioning set will
comprise of the second half of class.
Afternoon team practices will rely heavily on challenging swimming sets that promote
enhanced fitness. Proper rest and nutrition will be discussed and advocated. Videos will be used
to reinforce learning.
Alumni News
Malcolm MacAulay – Who is that guy in the skirt?
The family and I have joined a Scottish
Country Dancing group. They call themselves
“Scots on the Rocks”. The Rocks is a small
suburb of downtown Sydney; it was the site of
the first European settlement. At the time, it
was a raucous and notoriously dangerous
place, full of convicts, whalers, and street
gangs. Even though, people with money (back
in the 1820s) built 3 storey homes on the ridges
overlooking these slums-- the start of expensive
and desirable real estate near the water
began...
The Rocks was the location for outbreaks of bubonic plague from 1900-25 as ships imported
the infection after the outbreak in Hong Kong in 1894. The Rocks had whole streets razed to the
ground in the belief that this would stop infection and later residents were moved with the
construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge which has created a tiny hamlet with quaint old cobble
streets to walk around.
