“New Grange Adventures - Sweet Successes” is the theme for
this year. Use it to show your Grange achievements in your displays and
activities.
The Grange is the only family oriented fraternal organization in
existance today. We need to emphasize this in our communities and let
the younger families see what they are missing. The whole family can
participate in Grange as opposed to many other organizations and activities
where only one or two family members participate.
With the theme for the year and the possible adventures included
in this magazine we should have many sweet successes this Grange year.

“NEW GRANGE ADVENTURES
SWEET SUCCESSES”
“NEW GRANGE ADVENTURES – SWEET
SUCCESSES” is the 2007-08 theme for the Ohio State
Grange. Each Director has been challenged to create a
new adventure in their department for the new grange
year. They are meeting the challenge. The challenge
includes the Master. Back by popular demand, a Grange
Rally is scheduled for April 4, 5 and 6, 2008 at Friendly
Hills Grange Camp. This is a family weekend for all
ages. Mark the date on your calendar. More details to
follow.
With the completion of the landscaping, the
last major project at the office has been completed. I
invite all grangers to stop for a tour and visit or come
to work in the archives room. Our historian, Gary
Brumbaugh, has requested a call be made to the Master
to arrange a time to work. We want to be sure a project
is ready for you.
My thanks to all Grangers who shared their
time and grange knowledge with the State Fair goers.
With excellent display areas in the Youth Discovery
Center and the Land and Living Building, the Grangers
could meet and talk Grange to many people. My thanks
to JoAnn Ingram, Opal and Patty Dyer for coordinating
the many, many volunteers. Another highlight at the
fair is the annual state talent finals. Congratulations to
all who entered. Congratulations to Kayla Rohr and
Dale Hogue who served as our State Junior Fair Board
members during the fair. Dale was elected Vice
President of the Board. You both did a super job.
The annual State Grange Convention is always
exciting. This year is especially so for me. In 1973, I
served as a Delegate for the first time. Little did I
know I would be the person “in charge” one day. That
was, also, the first time I spoke from the floor. A dues
raise was an issue even then. I do not remember the
amount but I do remember I felt grangers sell
themselves short. I still feel that way. Our organization
has so much to offer.
It is my pleasure to announce the National
Grange Representative will be Jimmy Gentry and his
wife, Anita. Jimmy is the Chairman of the Executive
Board for the National Grange and serves as Master/
President of the North Carolina State Grange. During
e-mail: violaw@ohiostategrange.org
their visit, please extend Jimmy and Anita a warm
welcome from Ohio.
As always, Ohio Grangers can be proud of the
work they do during the year. The Junior, Youth,
Lecturer and CWA display rooms reflect the talents of
our members from the very youngest Junior to the very
young at heart senior citizen when they see a winning
ribbon on their entry. The National Grange has asked
for three contest items to be sent to the National Session
in Reno in November. It will be very difficult to choose
which three will go.
Our annual convention is one of the best.
However, the Executive Board and I are aware of the
cost factor. Many of the officers, directors, delegates
and deputies pay their own expenses. The cost limits
the visitors attendance, also. As a result of our concern
for our grangers, we are submitting a revised schedule
to convention directors in several cities for their
proposal for the 2008 session. As of now all events
will be held, just rearranged. With the present schedule,
the delegates spend time in committee meetings but
only 16 to 18 hours in session. According to the Ohio
By-Laws, it is the responsibility of the Executive Board
and the State Master to set the time and place for the
annual meeting. The Board accepts this duty with the
good of the order as their only objective.
Remember the theme “NEW GRANGE
ADVENTURES – SWEET SUCCESS” as you go
through the 2007-08 Grange year. I urge each grange
to share your successes with your community, your
non-grange family and friends and most of all tell your
members and me. You do wonderful projects but we
never hear about them. Brag about your activities.
Do you know?
Great Britain was the first county to issue postage
stamps, on 1 May 1840. Hence, UK stamps are the
only stamps in the world not to bear the name of the
country of origin.

Hi Grangers,
Legislative
Corner
The Ohio Legislature is off for the next two and
a half months. I suppose you are too, with pay, of course.
Well, back to business.
As I predicted, the ash borer has now reached
the Pennsylvania state line. A sad day, I have built what
I consider to be some beautiful wooden things out of
ash over the years.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources
announced a recently completed stocking of more than
9.1 million fish in state waterways by its division of
wildlife for great fishing opportunities in future years.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said
it is proposing to approve the request by the state to
designate Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, Knox, Licking,
Lucas, Wood and Madison counties to attainment of
the national health-based eight-hour outdoor air quality
standard for ozone.
The statehouse recently had its first wedding since
1870 when, according to Capital Square Review and
Advisory Board [CSRAB], Mary Gunner and Anthony
Sweitzer were married in what is now the treasurer’s
ceremonial office. CSRAB voted last year to allow
weddings to be held in the statehouse or on the grounds
on certain, predetermined dates. The statehouse
wedding package fee is $8,000 and both the ceremony
and reception must be held at the statehouse.
HB47/SB170 R Amstutz
This bill revises the membership of the board of
directors of a conservancy district that includes parts
or all of more than 16 counties, and makes changes
concerning the levying of an assessment by such a
conservancy district. This is one issue that did not get
resolved before summer recess, and it should not have
been voted on because there are too many issues still
to be resolved. Melanie Elsey, legislative director for
Ohio Roundtable/Ohio Freedom Forces, Scott
Levengood, a farmer and substitute teacher from
Tuscarawas County, Mark Stevenson, a pastor from
North Canton, and Sen. Amstutz testified in support
of SB 170. Melanie Wintrich from Quaker City testified
Legislative Director
Salem, Ohio 44460
e-mail: pecourt@sbcglobal.net
in opposition to the bill, Wintrich delivered a venomous
attack on the MWCD and the maintenance assessment,
accusing MWCD board members and officials of lying,
corrupting judges, having legislators in their palm,
misusing and wasting funds, and running amuck for
seventy years and doing nothing. She accused
legislators of not being willing to see the truth or to do
the homework. Some people feel that churches and
church campgrounds should also pay the assessments
because they receive the benefits. Levengood objected
to the assessments on the basis that MWCD was not
created to control surface water management. He
supported SB 170 as bringing more oversight and
accountability to the district. Chief Justice Moyer’s
letter to Rep. Tom Collier dated June 21, 2007,
addressed appearances-of-impropriety concerns and
said that he supports legislation that will remove the
blemish of partiality and unfairness that can accompany
service on a conservancy court for Ohio judges.
I have read everything I can find on this subject,
I know this much. The US Corps of Engineers took
on this project before WWII and dropped it during
WWII to never pick it up again for some reason. I
know that the MWCD has operated for seventy years
without an assessment and that the old dams and lakes
are aging with increasing problems related to erosion,
sedimentation, and pollution. But it just seems that no
person or group has studied the problem enough to
know two things:
1. What exactly needs to be done
2. How much money it takes to do it
You folks living in the 16 counties involved are
much closer than I. I am going to ask a favor. I have
had legislators ask me how Grangers feel about this
subject, so I am going to ask you. How do you feel
about this subject? I will take emails or letters, please
no phone calls. I need it in writing.
Thanks,
Gene

“Sweet Blossoms of News…”
Summer is over and I hope everyone worked at
their fairs and/or homecomings to get the Grange word
out to the community. The camps are over at Friendly
Hills and I hope a lot of you attended at least one
activity there this summer. New members are still
needed in our organization. Convention is the next item
on the agenda for the Grange year. Have your Granges
gotten their resolutions in?? You have until September
20 to get them in.
A question was brought to my attention on the
secretary’s award about getting a certificate. I
understand when the first year of reporting is correct
you receive a certificate and then a sticker to put on
the same certificate up to 10 years. Then the eleventh
year you receive a new certificate and then a sticker
up to the next 10 years. If you have a year in which
you do not fill out reports correctly you start over with
one. If for any reason you do not have your certificate
to put your stickers on please let me know and I will
get one to you.
The Distinguished Pomona Secretary award will
be issued to each Pomona Secretary who qualifies.
The year has gone by so fast. It is time for a
new program for another year. It has been a busy time
for the youth.
The summer activities for the youth department
started with the family campout weekend. This was
held June 23rd – 25th. The women cleaned the
mattresses in the Ross building dorms and the men did
different projects. The chairmen were John and Ginny
Erbaugh who along with their committee Mark and
Sherry Flowers, Jim Russell and Sandy Diewald did a
great job. Scott and Jennifer Russell were elected to
serve on the committee starting next year.
Summer youth camp was next; July 5th - 10th.
The theme was “Margaretville, A Tropical Paradise”.
This week was an educational and fun filled week.
Sarah Grafton did a cake decorating class for everyone.
This was a big hit with everyone. We had workshops
from the directors, SYC, leadership, history of music,
and a dance class. The Ambassadors did a class on
drills. We took the youth two times to the Dresden
pool park. We also elected the youth opening team for
the convention and the new SYC committee. The
opening team will be opening the Sunday evening
session of the State Grange Convention.
Sunday was our annual banquet with our state
officers and directors. We were honored to have a
special speaker for the evening. Harvey Alston and
his wife Tony joined us for the banquet and program.
Harvey did a wonderful program on “Be The Best You
Can Be”. He was a big hit for the evening. We want
to thank all of the officers and directors that spent the
evening with us. It was a pleasure to have you.
The new SYC for 2007-2008 are Justephanie
Chandler, Melanie Fitch, Luke Widder, and Andrew
Rohr. We are looking forward to a great year working
with this committee.
Many thanks to Wayne Spencer, Juli Grafton,
Jeff Carlson and Ashely Moreland, our past SYC for a
job well done. To Rich and Donna Mahoney for coming
down and doing our worship service.
We give a special thank you to State Master
As this is a large issue, I am limiting this article
to only an important correction and an update from
the past issue:
1) The e-mail address for Viola, which volunteer
archive workers are to use (if e-mailing) to contact the
State Master, was inadvertently omitted when applying
the entire article for the July/August printing. This
made the statement sound rather odd. It should have
read “If anyone or a group of you would be interested
in helping in any of these areas, contact our State
Master directly to schedule available day(s) for working
in the archives. She can give you further information.
If you e-mail, be sure to use the
“violaw@ohiostategrange.org” address.”
U.S. Post Office requires paperwork to be filled
went to the post office. Remember, keep track of the
poundage sent over the next year. Put in your report
how many pounds your Grange shipped. The
manufacturers allow 6 months after the expiration date
for the service men and women. We try to fill a small
box and get it shipped out.
We are continuing to do the Linus project. We
will get a drop off place to the deputies. You’ll have to
We will continue to collect eyeglasses and parts
Conference.
Our new State project is Con-Kerr Cancer
pillowcases. These pillowcases will go to hospitals
with patients between two years to 17 years of age
who have cancer. These pillowcases are to be placed
on the child’s bed so when they come back from a
treatment there is a bright colorful new pillowcase on
their bed.
This organization was started by Cindy Kerr,
who would make her son Ryan a new pillowcase each
time he would receive treatment for cancer. Other
families saw this and asked her to do it for their child.
The organization is currently opperating in
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia,
and New Hampshire. She was looking for an
organization in Ohio to take on this project. WE ARE
that organization!
Diana Norquest is a friend of Cindy’s sister.
This is how the Ohio State Grange Women’s Activity
got involved in this project.
Con-Kerr Cancer has distributed over 13,000
pillow cases in over several years. Ann & I would like
to set a goal of 1,000 pillowcases for our first year of
this project, let’s make this goal and more.
You can buy material for a $1.00 or $.99 a
yard. In Berlin, Ohio, your can sometimes get a bolt
of material for $5 OR $10, with 20 to 25 yards per
bolt. Other places have inexpensive brightly color
material. Holiday material is good to use, too.
There are pillowcases for those of you who
sew and those that do not. Fleece material can be cut
and tied for this project. You will need 3/4 of a yard
of fabric for the body and 1/3 yard for the border. The
material is cut to 26-1/2” x 40-1/2” and the border is
cut to 10-1/2 x 40-1/2. You do not have to put on a
border if you do not want to do so. The material will
be 36 x 40-1/2. You fold the border in half lengthwise,
with wrong sides together and press. Place the right
side of the border to the right side of the case. Stitch
together with a 1/2” seam allowance. Place right sides

of pillowcases together. Stitch down sides and across
the bottom. Turn to the right side out, wash and press.
Put finished pillowcase in a gallon ziplock bag.
The fleece takes 7/8 yard. Cut a 30 x 60
rectangle. Fold fabric so that the wrong sides face each
other and you have a 30 x 30 square. Draw a light
chalk line 5” from the edge with chalk or a pencil on
each side, NOT on fold side or the side opposite side
of fold. Mark strips for fringe 1/2” apart and then cut
each strip to the 5” line. With strips laying on top of
each other tie them in a single knot. Make a loop by
going behind the piece of fringe with both stripes and
then take it through the hole in the loop and pull.
We will have lots of instructional pamphlets at
convention or we can e-mail you a copy so you can get
started.
Ann made up labels to put in our bags. It says:
“MADE WITH LOVING HANDS AND HOPEFUL
HEARTS. FROM MEMBERS OF OHIO GRANGES”
with the Ohio State Grange address. We did this so if
people want to say thanks they know who has thoughts
and prayers for their child at this horrible time in their
life.
Our niece, Hannah Fullmer, daughter of John
and Terri (Trump) Fullmer, has her 4H group working
on this as a community service project. She has been
asking for material donations. She did this at Relay for
Life while they were walking in the relay.
We hope you take this challenge and run with
it. One thousand is our first step goal. Let’s beat it
READ
A BIBLE VERSE
DAILY
Greeting Grangers
The Grange is starting a New Year with New
Hope. We must call on all of our resources to make it
great.
Let us take the first part of this years Grange
slogan “New Grange Adventures”.
The Ohio State Grange and The Ohio Grange
Charitable Foundation are working to create separate
identities. Let us pray for success in this venture.
History has been one adventure after another
both Biblical and other ways. Adam and Eve were given
all they needed and told not to eat of one fruit. They
disobeyed and their punishment started an adventure
that continues to this day. Adam had to work by the
sweat of his brow to sustain him and his family, which
was an adventure, good or bad. Then his children
instituted murder and falsehood when Cain slew Able,
then lied to God about it. More adventure!!! Cain went
to a far country and took a wife, thus starting another
nation.
As time went on and people multiplied, more
adventure happened, nation rose against nation, the
losers were placed in bondage and made slaves which
was adventure although bad.
Thank You
Hello fellow Grangers,
A note of thanks to all the Grangers of Ohio
for their overwhelming response to our appeal for aid
on behalf of Sister LeeAnne Richter who had to travel
to SanDiego for specialized lung surgery. Thanks to
your prayers and your generous response, you have
helped to lighten the burden for this young mother
and her family. LeeAnne and Jim and son Noah were
present at our last meeting to express their gratitude
for the many prayers and for the help they have received.
God bless all of you and thanks for your help.
Moses came to the scene and had many
adventures while freeing his people from Pharaoh’s
rule. The separation of Israel into the seven tribes, the
dividing of the promised land, all adventures.
The coming of the Christ and his proclamation
of forgiveness and eternal life for all who believe in
him. War, war, war and more war up to the present.
All are adventures good and bad, still adventures
The Grange was born of adventure, the
aftermath of the Civil War. One man’s vision to help
those in the South or former Confederate States of
America created a great adventure called the Grange
or correctly “Patrons of Husbandry” which has
embarked on many adventures by supporting issues
and not candidates. By having programs for all ages,
including camps with adventure. We insist on equality
for all persons regardless of race, creed, color or
religion. We believe in our country and ourselves.
We have had sweet success and hope to
continue.
Read Acts 19 and Paul’s adventure and success.
Someday all will be sweet success.
“SWEET SUCCESS
THROUGH COMMUNITY
SERVICE”
National Make-A-Difference Day is on October
27 this year – one week after our State Grange
Convention. This will provide the opportunity for
Granges to have a local project as well as participating
in our Make-A-Difference convention project. The
April 13-15 issue of the USA WEEKEND – the
magazine section of many of our Sunday newspapers
– was devoted almost entirely to Make-A-Difference
projects reported and honored by the country. Ohio
had the largest listing of projects reported and honored
by the magazine. Honorees were listed by their local
newspaper involved. It would certainly be a ‘Sweet
success’ to have some of our Granges on that list – to
be recognized as part of something that widespread
over the nation. And even if you can’t participate in
that, remember that any project that you do that makes
a positive difference is a ‘sweet success’ for you. Our
convention project will be through the Ohio Association
of Second Harvest Food Banks. They need the same
kind of items as last year: non-perishable food items,
personal and paper products and financial support if
you prefer. These will be sent to a local foodbank/
shelter.
Again this year, on a state-wide level, we are
promoting the Dictionary Project, The Kelley Farm
Project and Phonics Phones. We urge you to support
the National projects that are important to you. Our
newest suggestion is “Farm Safety 4 Just Kids”. More
information about this project was in the July-August
article. If you would like more details or the name of a
contact person in your area let me know.
The Summary of Projects that will be in your
Community Service packet will also give you ideas
for projects. Every community is different. Choose
projects that will be beneficial to your community.
Community Service packets for all Granges will be
distributed at the State Grange Convention in October.
Report forms will also be in the packets. If you do not
receive your packet soon after the Convention, please
contact your Deputy or me.
There will be a workshop at the convention but
no Fall conference. We have scheduled one state-wide
Lecturers/Community Service Conference for March
29, 2008 at the State Office in Fredericktown. This
will be an all-day meeting. It will begin at 10:00 A.M.
with lunch provided. Registration will be required. A
fee of $12.50 will be charged to cover lunch and
supplies for the day. Watch this column for further
details.
Again, I ask for your help. We need ideas for
projects that we can promote on a state level. We no
longer will be collecting card fronts for St. Jude’s Ranch
for Children. I have sent over 75 pounds plus all that
you have sent directly to them. They are overwhelmed
and won’t need more for quite some time. If you are
saving used postage stamps I urge you to find a local
recipient. I, too, have been overwhelmed. Contact your
local military support group for information on the
grocery coupons for servicemen and their families.
Watch the expiration dates – timing is very important
with this project. Sending them to me is not the quickest
way to get them where you want them to go.
Also, we are still open to changing the criteria
for rating the Community Service reports. Several
Grangers have expressed the desire for changes but no
one has given us any positive, workable solutions.
However we will keep trying. Remember, change just
for the sake of change is not good. Change is good
only if it leads to positive improvement.
I am very proud of Ohio’s Grangers when I
read the Community Service reports, compile all the
data and then send my report on to National Grange.
Keep up the good work and may you have many ‘sweet
successes’ this Grange year.
NEW FOR 2007-2008
We have made an addition to the Community Service
Program for this year. Granges may now nominate an
organization in their community for Community
Organization Recognition Award. This could include
church groups, emergency squads, Booster Clubs, or
any organization that serves your community. Our
present Recognition Awards were designed to recognize
individuals. Each year we have had a group nominated.

This did not really fit the criteria and was difficult to
judge. So we are adding a category specifically for an
organization. Use this project so say “Thank You” to
your local fire department, park volunteers, etc., and
also to promote positive public relations for your
Grange. Forms for making nominations will be in your
Community Service packet.
Goshen Community Grange #578
“LIVE ADVENTUROUSLY WITH
SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS”
Here we are, starting another Grange year
already. I sincerely hope that the 2006-2007 year was
a very good one for you and your Grange. It certainly
was a busy one for me. And I thank you for that because
that means that you Grangers were busy, too.
Congratulations to all the newly elected
Lecturers. Selecting you to serve as a leader in your
Grange shows that you are held in high esteem by
your fellow Patrons. And my congratulations also to
those of you who have been re-elected. Re-election is
a show of confidence and appreciation of your work.
Just a reminder: As your members prepare their
entries for the art and photography contests at the State
Convention next month they should follow the rules
in the September-October 2006 Ohio Granger. The
labels for those entries need not be the same size as
shown in the magazine but they must contain the
information as shown. Also note that the categories
for the Creative Writing Contest have been changed.
Please check the magazine for those changes. Your
deputies cannot be changing labels as they are checking
the items in at the convention.
We have scheduled just one state-wide
Lecturers/Community Service Conference for 2008.
That will be on March 29 at the State Grange office in
Fredericktown. It will start at 10:00 A.M. and lunch
will be provided. A small charge of $12.50 will be
charged to cover the expenses. Registration will be
necessary so that we know how many meals to have
prepared. More details will be in the Ohio Granger so
watch this column. There will be the usual convention
workshop this fall. Since there will be only one
statewide conference, I have been asked if I would be
willing to do “mini” conferences. If one or two, or
three, counties would like to have one, my answer is,
“of course. Just call me.”
Lecturer’s packets will again be distributed to
your Deputies/Delegates at the State Convention. They
will include your reports, certificates, etc. from this
year, a cover letter, programs and report forms for
2007-2008 and program materials. If you do not receive
your packet soon after the convention, check with your
deputy or contact me.
Membership Success =
Gaining new members
Greetings from hot and steamy Coshocton County:
We hope all were able to keep cool and healthy
during the hot spell. The heat didn’t stop a Coshocton
County Granger from recruiting new members. Marilyn
Wyler of Progressive Valley Grange gained 26 new
in obligating them soon. What a pleasure this will be.
Marilyn and her husband, Dean operate a large dairy
farming operation as well as being active grangers and
staying involved in other community activities. They
are also the Grange delegates from Coshocton County
this year. We feel they will be very good in this position.
CONGRATULATIONS MARILYN on a job well done!
The premise “home, church and Grange” have held true
for this faithful Grange family.
Have YOU asked a neighbor, friend, or
acquaintance to join The great Grange organization
lately? What about that family who just moved in to
your neighborhood? Would they like to come to your
meetings and meet your members? We hope the
Do you know
Lightning strikes men about seven times more
often than it does women.
Women make up 49% of the world population.
About 50% of Americans live within 50 miles
of their birthplace. This is called propinquity.
A specific length of thread or yarn according to
the type of fiber is called a hank. For linen, a hank is
274 metres (300 yards); for cotton, it is 768 metres (840
yards).
membership teams are actively involved in the
recruitment process. Please send us your progress
reports. The Ohio Grange will only grow if each
member joins the effort. WE CAN reach our goal if
YOU become involved! Remember, if each grange in
the state recruits 3 new members a year, we can hold
our membership even. All our talking, writing and
visiting Granges will just be in vain if YOU don’t help.
This is our challenge to you!
Don’t forget the State Grange Convention
coming up in October. We hope to see many of you
there, and hope you will come away with a renewed
sense of making the Grange a better and stronger
organization. Remember: Our future is in YOUR hands!
On a personal note, Evelyn and I wish to thank
all the Grangers who sent cards or came by to help us
celebrate our 50th anniversary on July 28. The number
of Grangers who celebrated with us reminded us that
New Adventures in
Deaf Activities
New Adventures in Deaf Activities leads to
Sweet Successes in your Grange. Take on a new
adventure within the Deaf Activities Program this year.
Your Grange already collects pop tabs and Campbell’s
soup labels to benefit the Ohio School for the Deaf.
And you collect hats and gloves for several Hearing
impaired programs within the Columbus Public
Schools, Ohio School for the Deaf, St. Rita School in
Cincinnati, and Rufus Putnam School in Zanesville.
For all those items we thank you very much. The Deaf
Activities Program is much larger than collecting those
items. We help schools by making monetary donations,
host the Camp Opportunity for Families, and donate
scholarships, put up displays at the State Fair and Farm
Science Review. All these cost money. Without
donations from your Granges this would not happen.
To all Granges that support our other activities we
thank you very much. Are these activities new to your
Grange? If so, then take new adventures within this
department and support our other activities of which
lead to personal and Grange sweet successes. The Deaf
Activities Department is chock full of Community
Service Opportunities for your Grange. The projects
we are supporting this 2007-2008 Grange year are as
follows:
CAMP OPPORTUNITY FOR FAMILIES XIV
The 2008 camp will be the third weekend in
July which is July 18-20 with a beach party theme. We
are planning a Luau for Saturday evening with Jim
Schwab providing the music. The camp is a family
camp and we expect the parents to attend with their
children. An adventure for your Grange could be to
support a Deaf/Hearing impaired child, or family to
camp in 2008 by making a scholarship donation. The
cost of the camp is $55.00 per camper age 5 and above.
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Ohio State Grange Deaf Activities
Department awards scholarships to deserving graduates
at the Ohio School for the Deaf and St. Rita School
for the Deaf 2008 school year.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR A GRANGE MEMBER
We have started a fund to provide a scholarship
to a hearing Grange member who is a third year college
student, pursuing a career in Special Education in Deaf
Education, or Interpreting for Deaf. Donations may
be made to this project by Granges and individuals in
memory of someone who has lost their hearing. There
are three members who are nearing eligibility to apply
for this scholarship.
OHIO SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
Ohio State Grange has supported the Ohio
School for the Deaf before there was a Deaf Activities
Program in the Grange. We make monetary donations
to support their clothing fund, playground equipment,
scholarships, library books, and special projects.
CLOTHING FUND
The fund helps the Ohio School for the Deaf
personnel purchase clothes for the students from
families who are living below poverty level. The out
of town students stay at the school from Sunday evening
to Friday afternoon. The poorer children do not always
have adequate clothes to take to school each week,
and sometimes necessary items get left at home.
HEALTH DEPARTMENT CLOTHING DRIVE
The Health Department keeps items on hand
in case of emergencies. Please donate small panties,
and boys’ underwear, socks, sweat pants, and T-shirts.
The pants and T-shirts may be gently used, but the
underwear and panties should be newly purchased.
Please get the items to me at any State Grange activity.
I can take them to the school anytime.
ST. RITA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
St. Rita is a beautiful school located on a hilltop
overlooking Cincinnati. About 150 students are
enrolled at St. Rita School and about 50 of those
students reside in the dorms. There are approximately
60 elementary students and about 80 high school
students and 20 preschool children. We donate funds

to their scholarship program and help support their
classroom needs. We have donated hats and gloves as
well as Words for Thirds Dictionaries to their school.
GENERAL RUFUS PUTNAM COMMUNITY
SCHOOL
General Rufus Putnam Community School in
Zanesville is an elementary school of about 370
students which includes about 25 students in their
hearing impaired program who are mainstreamed. We
make a monetary donation to help with special activities
and classroom supplies for their hearing impaired
program. In the past we have donated hats and gloves
as well as Words for Thirds Dictionaries.
ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL SCHOOL
A.G. Bell is a preschool for Deaf/Hearing
Impaired students. We make a monetary donation for
classroom supply needs. We have helped them purchase
library books and donated a large screen TV/VCR.
They receive hats and gloves from us too. In 2005
they received our Hat and Glove tree. This fall they
should be in a new building that combines Huy and
A.G. Bell Schools.
HUY SCHOOL
Huy is an elementary school that teaches many
hearing impaired children alongside normal hearing
children called mainstreaming. At Huy there are more
hearing impaired students than hearing students. Huy
also received hats and gloves as well as Words for
Thirds Dictionaries from us. If all goes as planned
they should be in a new school with A.G. Bell
Preschool this school year.
ALUMINUM CAN TABS
A great adventure with sweet success is for
each Granger to clean up their community by collecting
and recycling aluminum tabs. Grange Day of Recycling
everything is May 17, 2008 at the Deputy Conference.
Monies generated from recycling the tabs will be
donated to Ohio School for the Deaf to defray the cost
of printing their yearbook. In 2007 we donated
$1,345.40 to their yearbook staff. If you choose to
recycle your own tabs and mail a check. Make the
check payable to “OSG DEAF ACTIVITIES”
earmarked to “Pop tab fund” and mail it to me at the
address at the top of this article.
33
CAMPBELL SOUP LABEL barcode and symbols
The barcode and symbols can be collected and
donated to me anytime. I visit Ohio School for the
Deaf many times throughout the school year so I can
take them anytime. Remember, we no longer collect
the front of the label, all we collect now is the bar
code and the little Campbell Soup man or the pencil.
If you have fronts left over, please recycle them with
your paper products because Campbell’s Company no
longer redeems them. The barcode is at the seam of
the label and is tricky to remove all of it because of
the glue, my advice is to cut the label through the
front picture and carefully peel it from the can. The
Ohio School for the Deaf Family Life students will
sort, count and redeem the labels for items they can
use at school. I will not count the labels, but you may
put the total number of labels your Grange collected
on your Deaf Activities Report so you know the success
of your label collection adventure.
HATS AND GLOVES
The collection of Hats and Gloves is a Grange
Adventure that individual Grangers can purchase and
donate to the Grange. Make a particular meeting “Hat
and Glove Donation Night” and see how many you
can collect. Keep collecting them in all sizes. There
are several preschool children who can use the tiny
gloves and hats and then there are many middle and
High School students who wear adult sizes. We have
trouble being able to collect enough tiny ones for the
preschool programs. They are being donated to seven
schools in Ohio. They are taken to Ohio School for
the Deaf, St. Rita School for the Deaf, Rufus Putnam
Community School, A.G. Bell Preschool, Huy
Elementary, Dominion Middle School, and Northland
High School Hearing Impaired Programs. Please try
to get them to me by the 2007 Ohio State Grange
Convention so I can get them to the schools before the
cold weather gets here.
STATE CONVENTION DEAF ACTIVITIES
CONFERENCE 2007
There will be a Deaf Activities Conference at
the State Grange Convention in Columbus. Please
check the Convention schedule for time and place for
the conference. I am hoping to have a guest speaker at
this conference and there will be handouts and we’ll
do some signing.
DEAF ACTIVITIES CONFERENCE 2008
MARCH 15, 2008
Ohio State Grange is hosting a Deaf Activities
Conference March 15, 2008 in the Friendly Hills Camp
Library. The conference is scheduled the same day as
the Legislative conference. Be sure to register in the
Ross building with the State Grange Secretary for lunch
count, and then report to the Library for the conference.
We will have guest speakers, make a craft, learn sign
language, receive handouts, and maybe receive a door
prize. This is a good time to get items for your Deaf
Activities Report.
DEAF/BLIND CONFERENCE 2008
The Deaf Activities Department have been
selling Rada Cutlery products to help sponsor the Ohio
Deaf Blind Conference in 2008. We have sold all the
paring knives and almost all the spoonservers. I will
be ordering more because this is a two year project.
Thank you for supporting this project. I know I have
supported it by purchasing paring knives and
spoonservers for family members’ Christmas and
wedding gifts. If you are interested in items, please
contact me.
PROMOTE HEARING TESTING
Organize and sponsor a Hearing test day in your
community. What a great opportunity for your Grange
to take on a New Adventure. Invite guest speakers from
the health center, ear nose and throat specialists,
audiologists, and/or hearing aid companies. Sometimes
the companies will provide testing free of charge in
exchange for advertisement for their company. Schedule
your event in May during Better Hearing Month. The
“Sweet Success” of your day will be promoting better
hearing, promoting your Grange activities, increasing
membership, and promoting the Deaf Awareness
Program. SWEET!
OHIO STATE FAIR AND THE FARM SCIENCE
REVIEW
The Ohio State Fair will be July 30-August 10,
2008 and the Farm Science Review will be September
16 - 18, 2008. Ohio State Grange Deaf Activities
Department helps with the display at each of these
events. We display our current camp pictures at the
State Fair and promote hearing protection at the Farm
34
Science Review. Protect your Hearing! An easy way is
to take time away from NOISE. Turn off the radio, TV,
and CD players. Take those personal CD player ear
plugs from your ears. Leave your cell phone at home
for a day. September 18-20, 2007 are Farm Science
Review dates for this year. Visit our display.
HEARING LOSS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
HLAA is an association to help Deaf/Hearing
Impaired people. I encourage you as Deaf Chairman of
your Grange to join HLAA. Their “Hearing Loss”
magazine contains many informative articles that you
can share with members. The articles contain good
information for programs or Deaf Activities Reports at
your meetings. To join send $25.00 to HLAA
Membership, 7910 Woodmont Avenue, suite 1200,
Bethesda, MD 20814. Also, check in your area for a
local chapter to join. HLAA chapters hold monthly
meetings where they share information on hearing
issues, and provide guest speakers.
DEAF ACTIVITIES CHAIRPERSON REPORT
2008 September 10, 2008
Report forms will be available at the 2007 State
Grange Convention in the Deaf Activities Packet. I hope
you receive one from your County Deputy or Delegate.
If you haven’t, please request one from me. Please
include in your report, your program and news articles
or brochure used at your meetings. Use this report as
your bragging book for your Grange Deaf Activities
Projects. Use this book as a membership tool by sharing
it with prospective members. Please do as many projects
as your Grange wishes. Return the report to me by
September 10, 2008. The top report from a Pomona,
Subordinate, and Junior Grange will be recognized at
the State Grange Convention 2008. Please remember
to include a copy of the program that you presented for
your Lecturer on deaf issues or awareness. An
outstanding program will also be recognized at the
convention.
SPECIAL PROJECTS
Some of the donations to this department are
used to promote Deaf Activities through advertisement,
brochures, making up and printing posters, pictures,
workshops, legislation, displays, camp, paying for
judges for Sign-A-Song Contests, etc.

INVOLVEMENT OF ALL GRANGES
Please appoint a Deaf Activities Chairperson
for your Grange. Your chairperson should report at
each meeting under “Standing Committees”. Cooperate
with the Lecturer and participate in a program with
emphasis on Deaf Activities of Deafness issues. Send
a copy of your program to the State Deaf Activities
Director, (Sarah J. Grafton, 167 S. Harris Avenue,
Columbus, Ohio 43204-3012), by September 10, 2008,
with your annual report. Each person submitting a
program will receive a certificate. Each person
submitting a report will receive a certificate.
Encourage members to participate in all
contests relating to Deaf Activities. Please refer to
New IRS rules for organizations
2008 ANNUAL ELECTRONIC NOTICE
FILING REQUIREMENT
In the past, organizations having a Taxpayer
Identification Number, with gross annual receipts of
$25,000 or less, were not required to complete a Form
990 or (990EZ) annual tax return. Form 990 is an
information federal tax return. Because of legislative
changes, The Pension Protection Act of 2006,
organizations with a Taxpayer Identification Number
will be required to file an annual electronic notice for
tax periods beginning after December 31, 2006. This
annual electronic notice is due by the 15th day of the
fifth month after the close of your tax period. If you
are on a calendar year and your tax period ends
December 31, 2007, the annual electronic notice is
due May 15, 2008. This form must be filed even
though your gross receipts are normally $25,000 or
less. If you are a supporting organization of a religious
organization and your gross receipts are normally
$5,000 or less, you may file an annual electronic notice
instead of form 990 or 990EZ. The form is simple,
requiring organization name, mailing address, employer
identification number (EIN), name and address of
principal officer, annual tax period, annual gross
receipts, and verify the organization is currently in
operation.
If there is a failure to file the annual electronic
notice or Form 990 or Form 990EZ for three
consecutive years, your tax-exempt status is revoked
as of the filing due date of the third year. If there are
any questions or concerns, please call the Ohio State
Grange Office, as there is an easy explanation for the
procedure.
Do you know?
The practice of eating insects is called entomophagy
Most insects are edible. According to eatbug.com, there are 1,462 recorded species of edible insects.
And they’re quite nutritious. For instance, 100 grams of cricket contains only 121 calories, less than half of
beef. A cricket contains only 5,5 grams of fat, compared to 21,2g of beef. Beef contains more protein (23,5g
- a cricket 12.9g) but the 100g of cricket also contains 5,1g of carbohydrates, 75,8 mg calcium, 185,3 mg
phosphorous, 9,5 mg iron, thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin.
