THE STRATEGIC PLAN FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS<br />
2012–2017
Moving Forward
we began with KU’s mission: to lift students<br />
and society by educating leaders, building<br />
healthy communities, and making discoveries<br />
that will change the world. We are driven<br />
to realize our vision that the state <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kansas</strong><br />
deserves an institution in the top tier <strong>of</strong> public<br />
international research universities. We can and<br />
will realize KU’s potential as an internationally<br />
recognized leader.<br />
this strategic plan is a guide that, when<br />
implemented with full resolve, will drive a<br />
transformation <strong>of</strong> our university. We will<br />
enact the strategies and action items described<br />
earlier in pursuit <strong>of</strong> the six goals. A small<br />
team will coordinate the overall logistics and<br />
implementation. It will work closely with<br />
university governance to discuss ideas and<br />
actions. It will chart our actions and time lines,<br />
monitor progress via a collection <strong>of</strong> key metrics<br />
and comparisons, and communicate regularly<br />
with the KU community. To ensure greater<br />
success, each school will develop and implement<br />
its own more specific strategic plan, intrinsically<br />
aligned with this one.<br />
the four strategic initiatives form a cornerstone<br />
<strong>of</strong> our research mission; they will inform our<br />
efforts in undergraduate education, graduate<br />
education, and scholarly engagement. In the<br />
coming months we will hold four universitywide<br />
summits to build research networks, target<br />
funding opportunities, identify infrastructure<br />
needs, and inform future hiring priorities.<br />
our transformational quest for excellence<br />
requires the participation and resources <strong>of</strong> the<br />
entire KU community — faculty members, staff,<br />
students, external partners, alumni, and friends.<br />
We commit to being good stewards <strong>of</strong> the<br />
resources entrusted to us by our students and<br />
by our fellow Kansans. In addition, we will seek<br />
significant new financial means by launching<br />
Far Above, our comprehensive fundraising<br />
campaign. The campaign will spread to every<br />
region <strong>of</strong> the state and will extend globally to all<br />
those committed to higher education.<br />
Bold AspirAtions: The Strategic Plan for<br />
the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kansas</strong> is our guide for the next<br />
five years. Through it, we will rise far above our<br />
achievements <strong>of</strong> the past and lead the way to<br />
a vibrant and prosperous future. This strategic<br />
plan is an announcement to the KU community<br />
and to all those we serve that we have raised<br />
the expectations we have for ourselves, the<br />
aspirations we have for our state, and the hopes<br />
we have for our world.<br />
