The Singapore International Arbitration Academy is jointly
organised by the National University of Singapore’s Centre
for International Law and the Faculty of Law, under the
direction of Mr. Christopher Thomas QC. It provides expertlevel
training to private practitioners, government officials
and in-house corporate counsel. The Academy blends theory
and skills training in international commercial arbitration
and investor-State arbitration. It provides an unparalleled
opportunity for government officials and private
practitioners in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond to
interact with luminaries of international arbitration and
develop important professional relationships.

The 2013 session of the Academy is due
to kick off on Friday, 22 November 2013,
for 11 days of intensive study (till 3
December 2013) at the National
University of Singapore. Enrolment in
the Academy will include attendance at
CIL’s 4 th Annual Singapore International
Investment Arbitration Conference and
the Singapore International Arbitration
Forum organised by Maxwell Chambers.
Our 2012 Academy brought together prominent arbitration practitioners and academics from around the
world as members of its Faculty. The programme was rated “excellent” by 85% of its participants.
For our 2013 programme, the Academy continues to focus on both commercial and investor-State
arbitration, comparing and contrasting their treatment of key issues as participants work through the
arbitral process from start to finish. As in 2012, there will be lectures, workshops, simulations, skills training,
video critiquing, and candid advice and counsel from some of the world’s top practitioners and scholars.
This is a unique opportunity for private practitioners and government officials in the Asia-Pacific region and
beyond to develop the training and connections they require in international arbitration.

Specialised Tracks
Participants will be divided up into: (1) Advocates and (2) Government Advisor /
Instructing Solicitors. To ensure effective participation and training, only 60 participants
will be enrolled.
Participants will be selected on merit.
ADVOCATES
These participants will have advocacy skills training sessions and will make
submissions in the oral hearings at the end of the programme before leading
international arbitrators. For this specialised track, the Academy will only accept
applications from attorneys that practice international arbitration in private law
firms.
This is a major opportunity for up and coming lawyers to showcase their skills before
their peers. Oral advocacy prizes will be awarded.
Registration is limited to ensure effective participation and skills training.
GOVERNMENT ADVISOR / INSTRUCTING SOLICITOR
The Academy has invited and reserved a place for one government official from all
ten ASEAN states. Applications from other government officials and in-house
corporate counsel who handle international commercial and investment treaty
disputes will also be accepted.
Registration is limited to ensure effective participation and skills training.
