This year too, the admission
period is almost over and
lurking ahead is the need
for a good hostel in the city. Even
after admissions into the sought after
colleges like Cotton College, B.
Barooah, Handique Girls College
and Guwahati Commerce College,
the students have not been able to
find accommodations in the college
hostels. Due to the non-availability
of seats or non-existence of
girls hostels in some of the colleges,
every year a large chunk of the students
opt for private ones. On one
hand, this has contributed to the
mushrooming of private hostels
in and around the city and on the
other, it has led to the growing concern
of security issues of the boarders.
Moreover, due to the high fees
charged by the private hostels, accommodation
in college hostels
is more preferable for most of the
students.
College hostels
Being one of the most prestigious
colleges of the region, Cotton
College naturally draws students
from all across the Northeast. The
admissions for both the higher secondary
and degree courses is over
for the academic session 2013-14
and around 1400 students have enrolled
themselves.
Altogether, the college has seven
hostels for boys and only three
hostels for girls and accommodation
is provided strictly based on
merit.
“Altogether 490 and 329 seats
are available in the boys’ and girls’
hostels respectively .Though, some
forty odd seats remain vacant in
the boys hostels throughout the
year, it is hard to accommodate the
girls in the three ladies college hostels.
In fact, if we add another five
hundred seats to the girl’s hostels,
all of them will be taken,” Convenor,
hostel advisory committee,
Cotton College, Arun Sharma told
G Plus.
In order to mitigate the situation,
the college is now looking forward
to renting private buildings
where more number of girls can be
accommodated.
“We are now looking for private
buildings near the college, so
We are not given any money
receipt for the fees paid.
Whenever there is any vacancy,
the hostel owner puts up a
board in front of the house.
There is no security guard in
our hostel. I am thinking of
shifting the hostel, but I do not
have too many option as this
place is near to my college,
that we can accommodate more
of our girl students. The boarders
might have to pay a bit more for
that, but they will be able to stay
secure, as the college management
itself will look after the hostel,”
Sharma added.
Regarding the fee structure of
the hostels, he stated that a student
has to pay Rs 3000 as security fee,
which is refundable. Apart from
that, Rs 1500 and Rs 500 is taken
from a student as establishment fee
(or seat rent) and miscellaneous
fee respectively for a year. A maximum
of Rs 50 is charged per day
for food, provided three times to
the boarders.
The situation of accommodation
of girls in Handique girl’s college
is more or less the same as that
of Cotton College.
“We have around 150 seats
available in the college hostel and
we provide hostel accommodation
to the degree students only.
Although, we have received a huge
number of applications seeking
hostel accommodation, it is not
possible for us to provide the facility
to all of them. Due to the limited
number of hostel seats, we have
been providing accommodation in
the hostel strictly on the basis of
merit,” Principal, Handique College,
Indira Bordoloi stated.
Another two prominent colleges
of the city, B Barooah and
Guwahati Commerce Colleges do
not have hostel facilities for girls.
“We do not have sufficient land
to build girls’ hostels in our colleges,”
the authorities of both the
colleges stated.
Mushrooming
private hostels
Owing to the huge gap in the
demand and supply of hostel accommodation,
especially for girls,
several private parties have made
their entry into the city. Apart
from a handful of quality private
hostels, most of them are operating
in the city without offering basic
facilities to the boarders.
The situation now has reached
such a state that anyone, who owns
a house in Guwahati, can start a
hostel or a paying guest (PG) accommodation.
Some people have
even done it in rented apartments.
A few of them though, have
registered themselves with the
GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation)
or own a trade license.
According to the data available
with the GMC, presently there are
70 private hostels for girls and 18
private hostel accommodations for
boys in the city. The GMC is aware
GPLUS JUL 20 - JUL 26, 2013
of the numerous unregistered hostels
and PGs operating their business
in the city but have no records
of these and the police too does not
have any comprehensive data.
“We receive complaints of disputes
between the building owner
and the tenant who runs the hostels
in rented buildings. Sometimes, we
receive complaints from the neighbourhood
getting affected by the
hostel. On the basis and nature of
the complaints, we dispose them.
Besides, we have the authority to
close down a private hostel, if we

find the particular entity violating any norms or operating without legal permission,”
chief health and senior veterinary officer, GMC, Arun Sharma told
G Plus.
Boarder’s Misery
While most of the boarders of the private hostels end up in misery, quite
a few have been lucky as well.
Rashmi (name changed), a student of B. Barooah College, who stays in a
private hostel in Uzan Bazar area, is quite discontent over the mean behaviour
of the warden and the monotonous diet of the hostel.
“When I first came here looking for accommodation, the warden seemed
to be very kind and had said that the hostel provided good quality food and
24 hours running water. We believed her then, but soon, I realised that the
food was horrible. The warden does not listen to any of our complaints,” she
stated.
Rashmi further mentioned that she has been paying Rs 4,500 per month
for the meagre facilities. The hostel even charges separately for the charging
of mobile phones and laptops.
“We are not given any money receipt for the fees paid. Whenever there
is any vacancy, the hostel owner puts up a board in front of the house. There
is no security guard in our hostel. I am thinking of shifting the hostel, but I
do not have too many option as this place is near to my college,” Rashmi said
with a tinge of concern.
Apart from a few boarders staying in the private hostels of the city, most
Mandatories for
A trade license from the GMC is
required to set up a hostel. This
process is similar to the registration
of any other commercial venture
2) Approved building drawing
3) Site plan of the premise.
4) Upto date GMC holding tax
6) Agreement with house owner
of the girls have to face situations like Rashmi. The area
near Uzan Bazaar, including Barowari, Chenikuthi, Guwahati
Club and Pan Bazaar is seeing a trend of growing
number of private hostels and PGs, since all these places
are near to the three most prominent colleges - Cotton
College, B Barooah and Handique. But, now the other
parts of the city too are witnessing the growth of private
hostels.
Regarding the facilities being provided to the boarders
of Nabagiri hostel, situated at Barowari, Indrajit
Barua stated, “When we started our hostel way back
in 1994, we charged Rs 850 per month from a boarder.
But, now the situation has changed and due to the soaring
prices, we have to charge more. On an average, now
we have been taking Rs 3500 per month from a student.
Though, sometimes this amount fall short for us to run
the hostel, we are trying to provide the basic and good
facilities to the boarders”
Meanwhile, the district administration too have become
proactive and after getting frequent complaints
regarding the operation of unregistered hostels and PGs
and non-compliance of promised services by some hostels
in the city, it has intervened into the matter.
“We have issued a public notice and under the SA-
RAIS act, have asked the unregistered hostels and PGs
Forms have
been issued and
we have asked
the hostel owners
to submit the
duly filled-up
forms before
August 14. We
have also asked
them to submit
information about
the boarders.
Forms have been issued and we have asked the hostel
owners to submit the duly filled-up forms before August
14. We have also asked them to submit information
about the boarders. Until and unless all the private hostels
or PGs are registered, we won’t be able to inspect or
monitor them. If we find any unregistered entity after the
stipulated period, we will take strict actions against them
under the SARAIS act,” as source at district administration
told us.
The source also mentioned that it has been receiving
verbal complaints against some of the private hostels
and PGs now and then. However, due to lack of proper
records, the administration has found it difficult to restrain
the unauthorised commercial entities.
In the last few years, Guwahati has only seen a significant
rise in the number of institutes. This has led to the
demand for students’ accommodation go up resulting in
unaccounted mushrooming of hostels, PGs and apartments.
While, this might seem like progress, the unregulated
method has also made students vulnerable due to
their desperation. Although the District Administration
has initiated steps to keep this in check, it remains to be
seen how much of it is practically possible.

As elders become physically
frail, they lose the ability
to stand up to bullying and
cannot fight back if attacked. Their
senses might not be as clear as they
were, leaving openings for people to
take advantage of them.
A newborn always seems to
make life beautiful and everything
becomes happy and fresh. Parents
love and care for their children and
shower affection upon them. They
are brought up with the expectations
of fulfilling many dreams in
the future and support their parents
in their old age. But, how well
founded is their trust and belief?
Recently, I helped an old lady
cross the busy G.S Road. She simply
thanked me and went along leaving
me thinking – how could someone
leave an old woman like her to this
crowded, reckless and hostile city?
It is obvious that the question is
cliché and no one has the time to
even think on them for a second in
this chaotic world, but then, it is a
concern that does warrant some
thought and questioning.
The scenario
Despite the fact that everyone
likes to ‘talk’ about their concern towards
the elderly, not everyone likes
spending time with them! They are
neglected, isolated and even abused.
This is not a new phenomenon, but
it was shocking to find out that Guwahati
was quite high up the list in
the elder abuse charts.
45-year-old Podumi Das was
leading a seemingly
happy life with
her husband some
20 years back. After
three years of
marriage, her husband
eloped with another woman
and soon, her in-laws too abandoned
her. She was left with her
4-year-old-son and some money
from her in-laws and parents which
she spent on bringing him up and
his education. However, Podumi
holds a very strange view - “Children
are of no use these days. It is
better to have no kids rather than
wasting your entire life on them.”
The 45-year-old justifies her feeling
by continuing, “My son lives
with his wife and children. I spent
everything on him but now I have
to work in other people’s homes as
a helper. My son leads a decent life
but I don’t ask money from him
because my daughter-in-law has a
problem with that.” Stressing more
on the issue, she said, “My son got
married three years back and soon
They don’t care about our happiness
and likings. I like chewing tamul but
my children don’t have time to even
get that for me. how will they support
me when I retire?
after his marriage, I started having
small conflicts with my daughterin-law
and the issue continued till
my son suggested that we should
live separately.”
City based businessman, Dilip
Kumar has three
sons and feels that
after he retires, he
will have a tough
time as he is almost
certain that
his children will not support him
afterwards. “I have three sons and
one of them is married. He started
living separately with his wife. Another
one of my sons is getting married
this year and my youngest one
is busy enjoying his life with friends.
They don’t care about our happiness
and likings. I like chewing tamul
but my children don’t have time to
even get that for me. How will they
support me when I retire?” Kumar
said.
62-year-old renuka Das, who
stays in a city
based old age
home Amar Ghar,
has a different
story. She narrates,
“I used to live with
my husband in West Bengal till
last year. As he is grown old and
we don’t have any kids, my in-laws
decided that I should start living
in Dibrugarh which is my paternal
home town. When I reached there,
my brothers and nephews lied to
me that we are going to Guwahati
for a tour and on reaching here,
they brought me to this home and I
realised that they have arranged for
me to be at an old age home. Since
then, no one has come to visit me
and I have not been able to contact
my husband. I feel like a burden to
them... I will live here till I die.” Renuka
was a government employee
and receives pension, which helps
her.
The first member who started
living in Amar Ghar was Kusum
uzir who has been there since
2003. She sounded
happy when she
spoke to us and
said, “I decided to
stay here after my
husband died. My
son is a lawyer at the Gauhati High
Court and my daughter works in
Kolkata. I have a daughter-in-law
Young thought
It is obvious that our society
and cultural values make us mostly
blame the youth for neglecting their
elders. 28-year-old Rupam Deb,
who stays away from his parents
with his wife and kids, describes
the scenario. He expressed, “After I
got married, my father and mother
started having conflicts with my
wife. I used to come home late because
of my job and every night, I
had to listen to complaints from
both my mom and spouse. Initially,
I did not pay too much attention to
the issues but after a few days, it became
impossible for me.” When we
asked him his reason for moving
away, he replied, “My father uses a
lot of foul language. I understand
when he uses it with me or my
mother, but he started doing that
with my wife. He started verbally
abusing her and behaved very rudely.
He used to taunt at us because
we were staying in his house. That
was the last straw and I decided to
stay away from my parents.” He
further added that it is not just the
youth who have to understand, but
the elders have to change their attitude
too, according to the changing
times.
Arup Das, a government employee
is of the view that the idea of
a joint family is fading out. He stays
with his wife and a daughter and
visits his parents occasionally. Das
said, “I decided to stay away from
my parents after getting married. I
do not provide any financial assistance
to them, but when they retire,
I will certainly have to do that.
Whatever the world says, I think it’s
my practical decision. My wife’s and
my parents mentality do not match.
There is a communication gap between
them, which leads to misunderstandings
and conflicts. So, it’s
better to stay away and stay happy.”
acting
activists
There are many NGOs working
for the wellbeing of the senior
citizens and HelpAge India is one
of them. According to a survey
conducted by them in 2012 which
involved interviewing 5,400 senior
citizens across 20 cities, Bhopal was
found to be leading the pack with
almost 77 per cent elders stating
they faced abuse, while Guwahati
recorded 60.55 per cent (see chart).
The report threw up other interesting
findings like, for example, in
over 60 per cent of the cases, the son
was perpetrating the abuse, while
daughters-in-law were responsible
for 24 per cent of the cases. More

According to 2012 HelpAge India survey on elder abuse
than 50 per cent of those surveyed
said they had been facing abuse for
more than five years and a high percentage
claimed disrespect and neglect
were the main forms of abuse
they faced. Only 44 per cent of
those abused reported it, while the
remaining chose not to as they were
concerned about ‘family honour’.
HelpAge India Northeast head
Nilondra Tanya feels that since the
last 5 to 10 years, the situation has
been changing and senior citizens
are getting affected in Guwahati too.
He said, “Abuse, neglect and isolation
are part of elderly abuse. The
generation gap between the senior
citizens and the youth has a big part
to play in that. Due to modernisation,
the traditional values are fading
out and the youth are becoming
self-centric and busy with their
own lifestyle.” He further added
that many of them think that the elders
are not relevant to the society.
Tanya expressed, “The government
also has not recognised the elders as
a section which has an issue. Policy
makers feel the scenario is not yet
alarming.” In Assam, the pension
amount is RS 250 which is less than
the other states of India and there
are many issues related to the implementation
of the scheme.
The psyche
Seniour Lecturer of clinical
psychology, Mythili Hazarika expressed
her views on elders and
the problems they are facing in the
general scenario. She said, “Because
My wife’s and
my parents mentality
do not
match. There is
a communication
gap between
them, which
leads to misunderstandings
and conflicts. So,
it’s better to stay
away and stay
happy.
of the increase in the population,
the living conditions in any family,
mostly joint ones, is chaotic and
therefore the concept of a nuclear
family is in vogue. The care and
affection towards the elders is decreasing.
They are left isolated and
suffer from depression.” She also
added that earlier, women used to
spend most of their time at home
and so used to provide extra care
towards the elders. Hazarika said,
“Nowadays, people are busy and so
they use professional helpers for the
care of senior citizens and feel that
they are not neglecting them. But
the elders meanwhile may think
that the youth don’t have time for
them.” Old age cause people to have
personality issues and their behaviour
becomes very rigid. If someone
is a perfectionist, it becomes more
prominent when they grow old and
this behaviour is sometimes misunderstood.
“Senior citizens suffer
from diseases like depression,
anxiety, dementia and attempt to
suicide. Youth are mostly unaware
about these diseases and cannot
understand their feelings. So, they
have to communicate with the elders
with a human approach.” Talking
about Guwahati, she said there
are not enough privileges provided
There are 4 old age homes
in Guwahati:
There is also a government old
age home in Boko.
to the seniors. She added that with
changing times even elders have to
be wiser and skilled so that their future
is secured and do not end up
in isolation.
Another psychiatrist, Dipesh
Bhagabati has worked with a number
of NGOs to help the elders and
has noticed several cases of abuse.
He described the reasons for the
abuse saying, “Some youth are very
self-centred and have no time for
their elders. There are also incidents
where there are two sons in a family
- one stays with father and the other
which leads to elder abuse.”
It can be assumed that elderly
abuse does exist in Guwahati and
the situation is alarming. However,
with more changes to come into the
society, what does the future hold
for the seniors and how can this be
resolved? It is true that there is a big
difference between the attitude of
the elders and the youth, but what
is the best way to erase the gap between
the two generations? The
Government is currently reworking
on the rape and other laws. Maybe
it is time to rethink on the laws governing
elder abuse as well.

No land, Ahoy
Shambhavi
Lack of land for industries is starting to render prospective
investments meaningless
GUWAHATI: While prospective investors
are ready with investment
proposals, bankers are ready to shell
out money and the market is ready
to grab the product, the vital ingredient
of industrialisation is missing
in and around Guwahati.
However, this ingredient, which
is taxing the industrialist because of
its astronomical price tag, is in short
supply. This vital component is land
and it has made investments to be
trapped between populism and development.
Industrialists are facing utter
difficulty to acquire land in and
around the city, following the tirades
launched by NGOs against
the conversion of agricultural land
into non-agricultural plots and the
huge demand of the industry to set
up units in vicinity of Guwahati.
The state government for now,
does not seem to be pushing for
industrialisation given the fact that
land in most of the cases, has snowballed
into major political controversy.
Earmarked areas for industry
are full and there is hardly any space
left in the Chaygaon industrial park.
For this reason, Industrialists
have also started meeting with
important ministries of the state
government to impress upon them
the need to have land reforms and
allow use of fallow land or land
submerged by waters for industrial
purpose.
An industrialist associated with
the move said, “Right now we are
flooded with investment proposals
but land is a big issue. It is available
but the problem is that those are
bracketed as agriculture land.”
He added, “A large chunk of
land which is readily available is
corned by a few businessmen who
want exorbitant prices. This makes
the entire project non-viable. Setting
up a project in and around
Guwahati is vital because there is
market here and the biggest plus is
the security factor.”
Rajnish Kumar, the Chief General
Manager of State Bank of India,
North Eastern Circle had remarked
that the bank has a good number
of bankable projects in hospitality,
hospital and education sector. He
said that activities are taking place
in the manufacturing
sector sporadically.
“We have set a target
of Rs 1000 Crore
(2012-13) exposure
in the industrial sector.
However, there
are not too many
bankable projects.
Acquiring vast tracts
of land, which is
much needed for big
industrial projects, is
a problem in Northeast
India.”
For a long time
now, the Assam
Government has
been talking about
land reforms. The
state government
has decided to frame
a comprehensive
new land policy for
the entire State. A
three-member committee
headed by the
Adviser to the Chief
Minister, Agriculture,
Dr. Bhumidhar
Barman, has been
constituted to frame
a comprehensive New Land Policy.
The committee would recommend
to the Government land use
and sustainable land management,
land resources conservation
and development, identify agricultural
and non-agricultural land,
resettlement of land, preservation
of water bodies and hills and encroachment
problems.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi
said that the policy would incorporate
various issues relating to land
resettlement for the landless, impoverished
and marginalised people
and those affected by the floods
and erosion.
According to a joint study of
FICCI and German agency, Konrad
Adenauer Stiftung (KAF), a closer
look into the manufacturing sector
reveals some interesting facts.
The growth in the manufacturing
sector, both registered and unregistered,
has not been very impressive.
The registered manufacturing sector
recorded negative growth for a
period of four years since 2005-06.
RETAIL
Indian Institute of
Management (IIM) has done
a study for Big bazaar in
Guwahati, in which it pointed
out that spend per visit in
the mall for grocery items in
Guwahati is Rs 1050 while in
Northern India, it is around Rs
650.
The study also pointed
out that the conversion rate
of visitors nationally stands
at 25 to 40 percent while at
Guwahati Big Bazaar it is 60 to
80 percent.
Since 2009-10, there has been modest
turnaround in this sector with
growth touching 4.1% in 2011-12.
However, the unregistered sector
had a significant growth in the
years 2007-08 with growth touching
as high as 14.6%. But there has been
a substantial decline post the year
2008 and the average growth, post
2008 has been 5.2% as compared to
10.6% in the pre 2008 period, the
study revealed.
The availability of institutional
credit per hectare of gross cropped
area in the State was only Rs 2626
while the all India figure was much
higher at Rs 15,379.
Gogoi had, in the past, stated
that if agriculture land is used for
industries, the industrialist would
have to consider the land of the
farmer as equity contribution and
make the farmer a stakeholder in
the project.
The new policy, which the government
is contemplating, will bar
alienation of agricultural land for
industrial and residential purpose.
“We have to ensure that agricultural
production is not affected. Big
industries require huge areas and it
is not possible to get such huge areas
here.”
Gogoi mentioned that once
farmers are made stakeholders,
those projects would also be benefited.
RBI Governor Duvvuri Subbarao,
during his visit to Guwahati
in February, he said that the credit
disbursement to small and medium
sector enterprise would be increased
by at least 50 percent. “From
Rs 2500 Crore it will be increased to
Rs 3800 in next fiscal year.”
The RBI Governor had explained
to the state government
that one of the reason for the low
GPLUS JUL 20 - JUL 26, 2013
credit ratio (47 percent) in Assam
was the land policy which does not
allow conversion from agriculture
to non agricultural land. “The chief
minister assured that he will review
the policy.”
Several experts have pointed
out that Northeast India is caught in
misplaced priority. All these years,
the governments of the region have
clamoured for big industries and
now, they want micro, small and
medium enterprises (MSME) sector
instead.
The forum of Northeast India
industry ministers, during its meeting
last year, did the mid-term diagnosis
of the North East Industrial
and Investment Promotion Policy

Chairman of the forum and Assam
Industry Minister, Pradyut
Bordoloi said that, “Big industries
need large lands which are difficult
to acquire in the hilly tracts of the
Northeast.”
In the last five years, under
NEIIPP, the region has received
336 private sector investment
In order to make smartphones more affordable,
Nokia on Thursday launched its new range of
smartphones, Nokia Asha 501. In a brief ceremony
held in the city, the new product was unveiled by the
regional general manager (east), Nokia India, Kislay
Kumar.
“So far, more than 20 million Asha touch sold
globally and in India we have around 700 million
subscribers. The new Nokia Asha 501 sets an exciting
standard for affordable smartphones, offering a
stunning design at a great price point. It’s not just this
one product but a refresh and a new direction for the
whole new Asha range,” regional general manager
(east), Nokia India, Kislay Kumar said on the launch.
The new range is available in four different co-
states, Assam attracted the maximum
investment proposal with Rs
21, 152 Crore. A good number of
these proposals were for Guwahati.
The Centre is on the verge of
reviewing the fiscal package of
NEIIPP, 2007 and the policy has
failed to get the desired response
from the investors. The Department
of Industrial policy and promotion
(DIPP), ministry of commerce
and industry will engage
Business
consultants for carrying out evaluation
studies of Industrial Package of
Incentives NEIIPP, 2007 applicable
to the eight states of Northeast India.
Non-availability of land in
prime areas like Guwahati will also
be on the agenda of review as without
this, any policy is meaningless.
However, for now there is a dearth
of land for industrial projects.
Nokia unveils Asha 501 smartphone
lours – bright red, yellow, black and
white and is priced at Rs 5199.
Regarding the unique and new feature
added in Nokia
Asha 501, Kislay has
stated that the phone
works with a swipe. It gets unlocked, closes
apps and shifts between two screens with the help
of a swipe.
“The new Asha comes with pre-loaded Nokia
Xpress browser, which compresses internet data by
upto 90%. People can enjoy a world of entertainment
on the Nokia Asha 501 with over 50 pre-installed
apps like facebook and twitter and other chat services,”
Kislay added.

City
Forced shut down
it can be regarded as
a significant breach of
trust and a major let
down for the people of
Guwahati. regarded
as one of the most
prominent and oldest
landmarks of the
city, the Bora service
station was not just
a fuel station but an
entity unto itself. The
recent revelation about
pilferage has shocked
the citizens!
It was only in the month of March
this year, when news broke that
IOC (Indian Oil Corporation) had
not done much to check pilferage. The
tankers, when supplying oil to the
stations, would adhere to the age-old
dipstick method of measuring fuel in
tankers rather than using the modern
methods of introducing flow metres at
the dealers’ premises. Such oil pilferage
leaves the dealers with lesser quantity
of fuel from the tanker pushing them
towards a loss-profit situation. This
often motivates the pumps to dispense
lesser fuel to their customers to
compensate their part of the loss and to
gain some more in the process.
In fact, a similar situation is
assumed to have happened recently in
Guwahati when Indian Oil Corporation
forced two service stations to shut down
as they were found violating guidelines
set forth by the Ministry of Petroleum
and compromising with the interest
of the consumers. The Bora Service
Station on GS Road and Kishore and
Company at Adabari are the two
outlets, which were closed down last
week by the IOC officials, based on
some complaints indicating that they
were not complying with the norms.
However, both these outlets have
the option to urge IOC’s marketing
division to review the matter. The
guidelines direct a dealer or an owner
of an oil-dispensing service station to
provide quality oil at accurate quantity.
The norms, allows the weight and
measurement department to carry
DESERTED (Sealed Bora Service Station)
out inspection of the various fuel
dispensing service stations every year
in order to certify them, but however
the two fuel-dispensing stations which
were found to be manipulating were
perhaps not following the implemented
norms set forth by both the IOC and
the Petroleum Ministry.
Such tendencies tend to break the
trust that can only be earned over a
long time. This was true, especially
in the case of Bora Service, which is a
landmark in Guwahati and one of the
oldest stations. It was a rude awakening
for its regular customers but it would be
too early to comment on the issue since
the matter might go for a review.
In fact, the Kamrup District
Administration (Metro) after carrying
out a sudden inspection of these petrol
pumps earlier this year had strictly
asked them to follow the norms to
keep up with the quality and quantity
standard in terms of delivery system.
But apparently, the consumers were
still unsure regarding adulteration
which finally led to IOC‘s entry.
Though IOC has been facing a lot
of criticism in recent times, its effort to
diminish adulteration and reassure the
quality-quantity aspect of ‘liquid gold’
has once again given the organisation
an opportunity to further consolidate
the trust that people have on it. On the
other hand, the issue concerning the
two fuel dispensing outlets needs to
be solved in a disciplined way, to help
create an atmosphere of sincerity for
the rest in service.
Ashimi Das, Bora Service staff
“There was a dispute between the ioC and our owner Debo Kumar
Bora regarding the rent of the land where the station is built. ioC people
sealed the pump on 12 th July. There is a case going on in the court.”
Shahjahan Bhuyan, Auto-Rickshaw Driver
“i heard there was some problem in their business. it is one of the
oldest petrol pumps of Guwahati and its closure is worrisome. The
business was running pretty well but i think, people became greedy and
started mixing kerosene with petrol.”
Asif, Businessman
“i don’t want this service station to be shut down. in terms of quality,
there might be a rumour but according to me, this station provides the
best fuel. i always buy fuel from Bora service.”
Md Siddik Ali, Transport Owner
“ioC has taken action against 10 petrol pumps in Guwahati. Bora
service is one of the oldest but if people are robbing the customers
illegally and earning money by fraudulent means then they should be
punished. They always used to fool people by tampering the fuel metre.”
DN Choudhary, Businessman
“it should not be shut down as the station is one of the oldest service
stations. if any anomalies have taken place from their part and if they
have cheated people than they should be tried and the truth be found
out.”
ShIvA ThAPA
Pint sized Dynamite
Guwahati born shiva Thapa (19) became india’s youngest gold medallist at the recently
concluded asian Boxing Championship. it is not just his talent, but also his choice of
music, clothes and influences that stand out. an exclusive interview with GPlus.
RAHuL CHANdA
Why Boxing?
I love sports and started playing
when I was 7-years-old. Initially,
I started with Karate and
Tae-Kwando and got addicted to
boxing once I turned ten. That
time, there used to be a craze for
Mike Tyson and he is still my idol.
In 2004, I played at the state level
and bagged gold. In 2005, I played
my first national match and bagged
gold there too. I became more confident
and hence, boxing is my career
now.
Inspiration
My father was my first coach
and the man who backed me in everything.
He is very strict and since
my childhood, my brother and I
had a very tight schedule. Whatever
I have achieved until date is
because of him.
Woman in life
At present, my mom is the only
woman in my life. I have sisters too.
What about romance?
I have a few female friends, but
no one special. I hardly get time for
anything. To be committed, one
needs time to prove the commitment.
At present, I am just committed
to my nation.
Marriage?
At least for the next 5 to 10
years I cannot think about it. I
have my elder brother and sisters
who are yet to get married and I am
very dedicated to my game. So, it’s
certainly not now.
Hobbies?
I love music, dance and watching
movies. Whenever I get time, I
make it a point to watch some good
movies. To relax, music is the best
medicine for me. I love Zubeen
Garg’s songs.
Best dishes?
I am a flesh eater. I like nonvegetarian
food, but hardly get to
because of physical fitness and diet
regimes. If I have to name it, I love
chicken, Sial Roti (Nepali dish),
Maas Tenga (Assamese dish) and
all non-veg items prepared by my
mother.
TIES THAT BIND: From left - Goma Thapa (Mother), Shiva Thapa, Govind Thapa (Brother & National Games Silver Medalist in boxing),
About Guwahati?
I was born in this city and I love
it. I might be a Gorkha by birth but
feel like an Assamese. This city has
given me a lot and I will always
belong to this place. Every year I
make it a point to visit Guwahati
during Bihu. I like dancing to Bihu
songs and eating laru and pitha.
Favourite hangout places in
the city.
I hardly get time for anything
but I like to hangout with my
friends in KFC and Pizza Hut.
When is an Olympic medal
expected?
I was very lucky to participate
in the 2010 London Olympics. I
tried my best but was not able to
win anything there. As I was the
youngest boxer to reach Olympics,
I lacked the necessary experience.
Until the next Olympics, I will
gain a lot of experience, but I have
to perform well in whatever I do.
Within the next four years, I have
many games so it is not only the
Olympics I am looking at... it’s all
the matches I play in.
Growing in a state, which does
not really have a boxing culture
to brag about, Shiva Thapa has
made a mark in the international
boxing for both himself and the
state. He is an inspiration for all
the young athletes of the state and
rightly deserves special kudos for
his achievements, both from the
people and the powers!
space
Guwahati, a budding metro
has seen an extensive
makeover in the past few
years and it’s for the better or worse
is for the people to decide. Dressing
sense, traffic sense and architectural
sense has changed quite a lot,
keeping in mind the future that is
going to be. Parts of the city which
were never considered feasible for
any kind of establishment are being
looked upon as potential areas
for future development.
But the question that arises
is that- are the present numbers
of spaces enough for the ever-expanding
market? Is the city being
able to accommodate every new
brand, bank or endeavor that is for
the betterment of the globalization
process of a city like Guwahati?
Even though there are many commercial
spaces available but the
problem lies in the fact that some
of them are not easily rented out or
are not the favorites of the business
houses.
On asking Mr. Hrishi Parna
Rava, Managing Director (Moodferry
Tech. Pvt. Ltd.), he said that
there is no doubt that spaces are
available in Guwahati but what
bothers is the balance of a perfect
location and the rent you pay. He
expressed, “Look at our organization,
we are a website designing
firm and not any product showroom
hence Pan Bazaar and Fancy
Bazaar were never considered as
options and a space in G.S. Road
was impossible for us due to high
rent. So, I believe that any space is
occupied based on the nature of
the business you are into”. Though
location, communication and ambience
matters a lot but even these
wont work if the rent is fixed at a
sky high price, impossible to reach.
Unfortunately, many buildings
which are well-planned out and situated
in good locations turn out to
be failures with no business houses
willing to take home in them. The
irony being, the buildings nearby
might be doing flourishing business.
What could be the reasons
behind such debacles? A study has
put forward reasons based on two
perspectives
non-technical
perspective
The concept of opening a store
along with many others under a
single roof has taken a backseat
what with, many of the brands
taking up sprawling spaces to put
up their customized showrooms,
tailor-made to their requirements.
Accessibility is also a prime
concern. Some places are more feasible
to people who have their own
vehicle, but the normal crowd is left
behind. That becomes a hazard.
Moreover there are many commercial
spaces or buildings erected
just for the sake of earning huge
revenues without looking into the
standard construction norms and
architectural designs. In such a
case, the would-be lessee does not
get appeased by the entire matter
and restrains himself from entering
into a rent agreement by putting
his investment at risk.
technical
perspective
An owner does not want to
show a loss to his financier, likewise
he also does not want an agreement
that would cause him to fetch a
lower net-operating income.
A deal that is done based on
mutual understanding may turn
out to be a problem in future, because
the price involved is less than
the usual market rate and if the
news gets leaked, future tenants
do not wish to pay the actual sum
demanded.
Certain clauses of the rent
agreement between the two parties
at some point tend to dissatisfy one
of them or both, leading to a situation
of displeasure. When that happens
it minimizes the provision of
future extension of the agreement.
Mr. Sanjeev Saikia (Advocate)
has said regarding the matter that
since most of the completed commercial
buildings are results of high
investments, the owners sometimes
tag a price rate impossible
for a tenant to pay. The vacancy is
also due to the mismatch of thinking
habits or different mind-set between
the two parties. He is also of
the view that sometimes the background
of the builder or the owner
of the building becomes a matter of
concern. A good reputation would
definitely attract potential clients.
And lastly commenting on the issue
he stated that often commercial
properties face problems related to
land dispute and other issues. Such
complicacies hinder the occupancy
procedures.
Based on observation, an interesting
fact came to light; it was
found that today the most desired
places for people to opt for an office
space were G.S. Road and R.G.B.
Road. It has also been found that
the rents in these places are exorbitant
and quite high with no
standard rent structure which the
people adhere to while renting out
their space and the rent is mostly
seen to depend on popularity
and demand of the place. Though
M.R.D. Road and R.G.B. Road still
have a large number of offices but
the thought to set up an office at
the G.S. Road vicinity have become
an ideal desire for many business
houses.
In G.S. Road itself the rent
structures differ from location to
location. Today being the most
prime area for vivid commercial
business houses, the entire renting
system is different through out
the area. A keen observation points
towards the different price rates
for renting out spaces. Vacancy at
Christian Basti had some of the
highest rent value per square feet
while the others were not of the
same. There is no fixed rate for rent
in per square feet value and sometimes
these rents are negotiable. It
has been observed that the consistency
regarding the rent structure
of a locality; rather than depending
on the area available depends on
the popularity of the place.
Mr. Ashish Bharali, Director,
(Nilakkhi Infrastructure Pvt.
Ltd.), says that there is no shortage
of commercial spaces as nowa-days
many owners are building
commercial complexes on their
respective properties. They prefer
commercial spaces because renting
out these bring in more profit.
Guwahati is an ever expanding city
and even the suburbs are coming
up with concrete structures with
commercial spaces. So, there is definitely
the supply but again question
arises regarding the demand.
Though the peripheries of the city
GPLUS JUL 20 - JUL 26, 2013
ThE SCENARIO
may consist of a large chunk of
population but setting up an office
there is still sometimes not considered
a suitable idea. There are certain
things which often the lessee
sees before taking up a place. The
communication system, the locality
of the commercial complex,
the nearby vicinity, everything
matters. If these factors are missing
then surely the place remains
vacant. In that case everybody
wants a space in a prime location
at a descent rent but a high price
tag leaves the entire matter with no
further fruitful provisions.
There is a dearth of Software
and Information Technology companies
in not only Assam but the
entire Northeast region. These
companies need prime locations
and huge areas to function. So, if
these types of company enter the
market here, they would definitely
eye for vacant spaces situated in
prime locations.
Commercial space is the one
thing which is given the topmost
priority in any organization because
this is the very place where
all the business begins. A good
commercial space in a prime location
is a dream that everyone sees.
Today their presence and rising
numbers indicate towards a comprehensive
business structure that
is shaping up the city of Guwahati.
With city temperatures touching the 35-plus mark
and humidity levels increasing, the regular officegoing
crowd is facing a tough time coping up. The
heat does not look to be receding yet and the rise of
the concrete jungle only seems to be adding up to the
rising mercury levels.
This rise in environmental temperature also considerably increases
the risk of a heat-stroke. Individuals who work outside and physically
exert themselves under the sun run the highest risk of succumbing
to a heat stroke. It is advisable to exercise caution and the most
vulnerable individuals are the athletes, sales and marketing people, vendors
and hawkers, and other individuals who physically exert themselves
under the sun. It is important especially during heat waves to pay attention
to your body.
There are certain signs we overlook so, lets clear it out by defining
what exactly is a heatstroke? A heatstroke is when your body severely
overheats. Heatstroke happens when you indulge in intense physical activity
in hot conditions. Normally, the body has a cooling system that
is controlled by the brain. The cooling system adjusts to hot conditions
and lowers your body temperature by producing sweat. With heatstroke,
the body’s cooling system is not working well and results in an increased
body temperature. the symptoms can be:
Rise in body temperature i.e. 104°F or more.Skin may be red
and dry.
Headache, nausea and vomiting.
Muscle cramps.
Heart starts beating faster than normal.
May feel dizzy, weak or tired.
Prickling feeling in arms and legs.
Seizure.
Unconsciousness.
Lack of sweating despite of heat.
Behaviourial change such as confusion, disorientation and
staggering.
after attack
Apply cold
compresses
Use a fan
to lower
temperature
Make the person lie down
Wear light-weight, loose and light coloured
cloths. This helps in letting the heat pass by and
not get stored in the body. Opt for cotton clothes
as it is more soothing.
COVEr YOUr hEaD
As the top is always exposed its better to use a
cap, hat or an umbrella that may protect your head
from getting exposed to the sun. This is important
because its restricts the sun from direct contact
with the head.
iNtakE FLUiD
During extreme exposure to heat it is preferable
to drink electrolyte-rich sports drinks rather
than water as heavy sweating removes salt and
minerals from your body. It is important to drink
water every 15 minutes regardless of thirst.
DriNkS tO BE aVOiDED
Alcohol and drinks containing caffeine should
be avoided as it increases the rate of dehydration.
takE BrEakS iN BEtWEEN
If an individual works out in the sun the whole
day then one should take breaks in between by
standing in the shade for 5 minutes. This helps in
cooling down of the body every time it heats up.
aVOiD hOt FOOD
As the body remains hot, one should avoid
hot food items and replace them with cold ones.
We suggest more of salads and fruits with high
water content.
SPriNkLE WatEr
During the break under the shade you
should sprinkle some water on your skin and
face. This helps in keeping the body hydrated.
You can also put a damp handkerchief on the
back side of the neck.
These steps may help in saving oneself
from the risk of a heatstroke. But you should
also be careful not to let the body cool down too
rapidly or consume too much fluid at once.
As your body temperature rises, your brain
and other organs may get damaged. Heatstroke
can lead to severe dehydration and organ failure.
Organ failure is when your heart, liver, or
kidneys cannot work properly due to lack of
oxygen. Heatstroke is a serious, life-threatening
condition and so one should take it very
seriously.

HEAD
HEAD TO
1. ABS
The KTM as expected, comes
with an ABS. Means, you don’t
have to worry about slowing
down this beast from high
speeds. A planned addition
considering the amount of
horses the brakes are dealing
with.
2. THE CLASSIC WAY
If classic is your way than classic
is the way to go. Royal Enfield
has studded the Classic
Desert Storm with retro (much
loved) dials on the instrument
cluster..
3. MORE JUICE FOR THE
CRUISE
With a larger fuel tank and
considerably more torque on
offer, the classic proves better
on those long rides.
2
Right now, KTM seems to be in no mood
to mess around! It recently launched
the KTM 390, which technically does
not have any competitor in the current biking
scene but has the potential of eating into the
market of other models. In terms of sheer power,
there are no other bikes in that range, but if
you consider the price range then the nearest
competitor seems to be the Royal Enfield Classic
500. However, it can be argued that the Royal
Enfield is a cruiser and although the KTM is
projected as a touring bike, the Enfield will be
a much more comfortable ride than the KTM.
The only similarity between them is the price
factor which plays a significant in the decision
making process of the Indians.
In their launch presentation, KTM positioned the 390 as an upgrade
from mass sports bikes, alternate option to super premium bikes, alternate
option to tourers and an upgrade from the KTM 200 Duke.
The Enfield is a cult classic and has a lot of loyalists swearing by it while
the KTM will be a mouth-watering prospect for the others.

The actor claims that he has met Huma only a couple
Shahid is Bollywood’s most eligible bachelor and hence,
Talking in particular about Huma Qureshi, the
Salman Khan’s newest interest, Iulia
While the grapevine is buzzing with
Sallu’s alleged affair with the Romanian
Iulia to find out more about her.
It seems that not too long ago, Iulia
Marius Moga, who’s also Romanian.
The couple - tabloid darlings in
eastern Europe - have been on a rollercoaster
getting back together a couple of times.
Their tumultuous affair and highlypublicized
PDA regularly grabbed headlines.
Marius is a name to reckon with in
after she started co-hosting the show, Dansez Pentru Tine (Romanian
While there’s been a lot of gossip about Marius and Iulia, at least
one Facebook page of Marius declares them married.
Apart from his relationship status that says ‘married to Iulia Vantur’,
there’s also a post from August 7, 2012, clearly showing the two
Pacific Rim
A funny, imaginative film plagued with bad acting
Cast : Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie
Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman
Director : Guillermo del Toro
Parents need to know that Pacific Rim is a giant monsters
vs giant robots movie from Oscar-nominated
director Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth).
Fighting and violence are the film's biggest issues,
though the huge, loud clashes are more about punching,
pummelling, and the rampant destruction of property
than bloodshed (the only blood shown is in the form of a
bloody nose). One minor but key character dies. There's a
romantic connection between a male and female character,
but their bonding is mostly non-sexual (aside from a
scene in which she breathlessly looks at his naked chest).
Language is infrequent but includes a couple of uses of
words like "s--t," "bitch," and "goddamn."
A fantastic prologue puts the audience into the mix
immediately, showing how a rift in the bottom of the Pacific
created a wormhole into another dimension where
an army of monsters called Kaiju emerged and attacked
our major cities. To fight the monsters, giant robots
known as Jaegers were created, which humans would pilot
from inside by using a device similar to an elliptical
machine. When cocky pilot Raleigh’s (“Sons of Anarchy’s”
Charlie Hunnam) brother is killed by one of the Kaiju, he
must come to terms with his own inadequacies and join
one of the sole remaining rebellions against the Kaiju.
Guillermo del Toro’s signature style is prevalent in
almost every shot, despite an exponentially larger scope
than the director may be accustomed to. Everything
from the production design to the costume’s (especially
Ron Perlman’s funky glasses) to the angular features of
the Kaiju are very much del Toro staples, as are the gritty
and gothic Hong Kong street scenes. Fans of “Hellboy”
and “Pan’s Labyrinth” will surely find “Pacific Rim” to be a
culmination of the director’s visual oeuvre, plus discovering
plenty new material.
now showinG
Prabhu Deva’s Ramaiya
Vastavaiya is expected
to woo the movie goers
this week. The film
introduces producer Kumar
Taurani's son Girish
Kumar opposite Shruti
Haasan. It is a remake of
Prabhu Deva's directorial
debut Telugu blockbuster
Nuvvostanante
Nenoddantana which
in turn was inspired by
the 1980s romantic cult
movie Maine Pyaar Kiya.
Del Toro weaves his very own mythology throughout
the film, circumventing the massive battle sequences and
creating some minor but zany depth to this world, like
creating the “drift”, a temporal connection between the
Jaeger pilots, which allow their minds to connect as one;
or the mysterious monster world which exists in another
dimension and is the true origin of our dinosaurs. This
mythology is pure Guillermo del Toro but the director, as
well as co-writer Travis Beacham only scratch the surface
of what could be mined. They leave the fun mythology
and “science” stuff to two wacky opposing “scientists,”
both tongue-in-cheek stereotypes. The first is Charlie Day
doing a wonderful Rick Moranis/Bobcat Goldthwait oneoff
as the overzealous and nerdy Dr. Newton Geiszler and
the classically German mad-scientist Gottlieb (Burn Gorman).
More than any other character in the film, these
two embody that wildly imaginative del Toro mind.
“Pacific Rim” is never pretentious and is often funny,
which makes it lofty and entertaining, despite some rancid
performances. Except for Charlie Day, Ron Perlman
and the sublime Idris Elba, the performances are often
cringe-worthy. Under ordinary circumstances, bad acting
can sink a film, but del Toro has presented such an extensive
buffet of goodies that it’s easy to look past the acting
(it’s not as if the characters require top-notch acting in
the first place) and get lost in this brave new world. Elba,
of course, steals the show as the no-holds-barred commander
Stacker Pentecost. His great line “Today we are
cancelling the apocalypse” has already made it into this
year’s pop culture lexicon and is one of the highlights of
the film.
Finally, props to Warner Brothers for releasing a wildly
imaginative sci-fi romp of this scale which isn’t a sequel
or remake. Despite “Pacific Rim’s” flaws, here’s hoping
enough people see it and like it to send the message to
all the studios that it’s not always a bad idea to produce
new material, especially from directors like del Toro who
certainly knows how to make a commercial film with a
unique and visionary style.
D-Day
Bollywood action genre touches new heights
Cast : Arjun Rampal, Irfan Khan, Huma Kureshi, Shruti hassan,
Director : Nikhil Advani
Director Nikhil Advani, who’s made lots of films with
songs and dances, knows that Indian audience are can
no more be fooled and that’s why his gritty espionage
thriller D-Day is like a breath of fresh air. There are songs and
dances too, but they all fall into a neat package in this taut drama
that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout its
140 minutes’ run time.
India’s biggest international export Irfan Khan (Slumdog
Millionaire, Life of Pi, Namesake) plays Wali Khan, a member
of the country’s elite intelligence agency called RAW (Research
and Analysis Wing) who’s been sent to Pakistan to report on the
activities of his country’s most wanted man, nicknamed Goldman,
played by Rishi Kapoor.
After nine years, three other agents played by Arjun Rampal,
Huma Qureshi and Aakash Dahiya are sent to assist Khan
in a mission to the bring Goldman to India. Of course, on D-
Day (also a reference to real-life criminal Dawood Ibrahim,
whose crime syndicate is often called D-Company) the welletched
plan goes very wrong, and Goldman manages to escape.
To avoid embarrassment and not willing to risk an already
frail relationship with Pakistan, the Indian government denies
any involvement with the incident and disowns the agents.
Stuck, and hunted by the Pakistani government and Goldman’s
men, the four must fight for redemption or die.
Khan, as an agent torn between love of country and the new
life he’s set up in Pakistan with his wife and young son, oozes
the right amount of vulnerability and strength, while Rampal,
as Captain Rudra Pratab, shines as a brooding, merciless agent
who unwittingly falls in love with a prostitute, played by Shruti
Haasan. Kapoor’s portrayal of Goldman is a joy to watch: He’s a
menacing mass murderer one minute, a pious man the next and
then a doting father, nuances only an actor of his calibre can
master, including the signature red shades he wears throughout.
Alas, it’s not all smooth sailing for D-Day. Advani, like
many of his peers in the industry, falls (briefly) into that Bollywood
song trap. There is a very weird scene in the film, which
is both a gruesome murder scene and a song sequence. Perhaps
Advani was trying to move the story along but what we end up
seeing is a very sad song pictured on a woman being violently
assaulted – and all in slow motion. Not that you’d mind. Because
by then Advani has already convinced you that he’s just
taken the industry one step ahead.

Parenthood and sex life
G Plus feature
A
city based young father, Rajeshree
Das said, “When my wife gave birth
to a baby boy, our doctor told us to
avoid having sex at least for six months. Now,
my son is 18 months old and still my wife
does not agree to do it. I have to persuade
her a lot to make love.” Having a baby is an
amazing, life-changing experience. But no
matter how much in love you are with your
little one, caring for a new-born can take a
serious toll on your sex life. To put it bluntly,
babies are sex killers. Though getting back
in the sexual swing of things can be tough,
it’s a necessary process. How to deal with the
situation?
getting tHe green signal
Most women receive the green signal
from their doctors to have sex between four
to six weeks after delivery. Before you start
up again, you should no longer have any
postpartum vaginal discharge, known as
lochia. Regardless of a vaginal or scissoring
delivery, all women who give birth go
through this period for a few weeks afterward.
Having sex before the discharge stops
puts you at risk of infection. If you had a lot
of stitches during childbirth, getting the OK
to resume sex may take even longer.
lack of sleep smotHers your sex drive
For moms of newborns, sheer fatigue is
perhaps the biggest roadblock to feeling sexy
again. Especially at the beginning, a new baby
is usually awake to feed every two or three
hours around the clock. This pattern can go
on for months. While the night-time waking
continues, it may feel like you have become
a mommy machine, devoid of sensation and
desire. Dad might be just as tired. But men
are still more likely to be interested in sex.
To them, it’s often a way to relax and help feel
emotionally close to the spouse. They don’t
need much of a warm-up before diving into
sex. In contrast, most women need some talk
and foreplay to become aroused.
sex scHedule
If fatigue is what’s keeping you from getting
your sex life back, the first thing to do
is talk with your partner about it. Do some
creative problem solving. Ask your partner
to watch the baby, so you can rest up and get
into the mood. Also, aim for early morning
sex, when you have both had a chance to get
some sleep. Lean on your family or friends
or a sitter so you can have some time without
the baby. Or give it a shot when junior is napping.
Of course, your baby might wake up at
the worst possible moment - while you are
trying to reignite those bedroom flames.
post pregnancy Hormones
Hormones are part of the sex problem
too. Estrogen levels go down after delivery.
That can cause a shortage of vaginal lubrication,
which can make sex painful or less
pleasurable. A simple solution: Use a topical
lubricant during sex. Lubrication issues usually
go away after you stop breast-feeding or
after your period resumes. Hormonal changes
after childbirth might also be related to
postpartum depression, which can stymie
sexual desire. Talk to your doctor if you are
having these feelings.
breast-feeding may get in tHe way
Breast-feeding has many benefits. But it
can create several pitfalls when you try to
resume your sex life. Spending tremendous
amounts of physical and emotional energy
feeding baby may block access to a nursing
mom’s sexual mind and body. Compassion is
just as important as passion. Let your partner
bring these feelings out into the open,
so you can address them together. Constant
nursing or pumping milk can make your
breasts feel so tender you just don’t want to
be touched there. If you are worried about
the tenderness and care, try to keep your bra
on during sex.
tHe body cHange
During pregnancy, a normal-weight
mother typically puts on about 25-35
pounds. Add on newly acquired stretch
marks and a fresh scar if you have had a csection,
and it’s no wonder so many women
say they feel self-conscious, turned off, and
even depressed about their body. If you are
not feeling so hot about how you look, your
partner’s positive feedback can go a long way.
Enlist your mate’s help in working toward
your body goals. For example, you can ask
for a half hour to exercise while they watch
the baby, or for more support in preparing
healthy meals. Meanwhile, it is wise to buy
some lingerie that makes you feel sexy while
strategically covering up some of your new
problem areas. Another physical issue is
that delivering vaginally usually stretches
the vaginal walls, which could decrease friction
and thus reduce sexual enjoyment. It
can take a while for those muscles to resume
their original tone. For some, it never does,
I’m a 15-year-old girl in love with a
21-year-old guy. We love each other a
as there is a big age difference. Also, we
- Sanghamitra
You are so confused kid! You
feel this relationship is absurd,
there is an age difference and
want to leave him. I suggest that
you deactivate your facebook
a good idea.
Holding you back
If you are still having trouble resuming
your sex life - apart from physical issues - it
might be time to take a look at what’s going
on emotionally in your relationship. Ask
yourself, what is making you uncomfortable
that you don’t want to express intimacy with
your partner through sex? One of the typical
emotional blocks is the feeling of anger
or resentment about being home, changing
diapers all day while your spouse re-joins
the real world and does normal things like
working outside the house and talking to
other grown-ups.
With each stage of your family’s development,
you may enter a new situation altogether.
But it’s not about how much sex you
are having. It’s about how unhappy you each
might be about not having it. If one partner
feels denied all the time, it creates vulnerability
in the relationship.
Sunglasses are doubtlessly
a year-round accessory, but we’re
Perhaps the greatest accessory that
is sure to get you noticed is the evertrendy
sunglasses! What better way
to strut your ultimate manhood
than with cool sunglasses.
Branded sunglasses taking over market
The Rs 330-crore Indian sunglasses industry is dominated by glasses in the Rs 50-100 range, with no assured quality or design
protection. But things have changed with branded players all set to woo the new-age Indians.
It’s largely an urban-centric consumption, driven by lifestyle changes, exposure to media and higher disposable incomes. Men
generally buy shades for protection and quality while women go for multiple brands to suit different occasions.
With an array of stylish choices of shades from luxury brands, don’t let the sun bother you. In fact, flaunting your smart pair of
sunglasses was never a bad idea.
Sunglasses have changed from being a utility product to a key fashion accessory.
An arresting collection of sunglasses are on display in the city. These dark glasses not only
protect your eyes but also make you look ultra-glam.
We live in exciting times, and this is the time to be quirky. So choose the funkiest glasses, go
outside, and have fun!
The 70s look is back in vogue with sunglasses too. And, especially, coloured rim shades.
Sunglasses are as much a part of your summer wardrobe as shorts, T-shirts, sundresses, and
sandals. In fact, since you wear them with every outfit, they are arguably more important than any
other item.
If you are somewhat conservative, then, by all means, feel free to go with a classic pair of
shades. However, if you consider yourself to be fairly eclectic and outgoing, you may want to
consider a funky pair.
At the end of the day, the most important thing when selecting a pair of sunglasses is that they
match your personality and style perfectly. If you are a wild and interesting person, why not dress
up your summer outfit with a pair of equally cool shades.
G-talk
Should Shantikam hazarika be sacked?
POINT
Moni Madhav Mahanta
Education Secretary (AASU)
We, with a constructive logic for the
society, demand for the immediate
removal of Mr. Shantikam Hazarika
from the post of the Board of Secondary
Education Assam (SEBA) chairman. It is
important for our state’s future to provide a
systematic and efficient educational structure
to the students who are the future of Assam.
Moreover, for any institution to make progress
and development, the head of the institution
has to be efficient and a visionary. We, as
a student’s body, have always fought for the
betterment of the state’s education system
and this time we are fighting to form a structured
organisation, which can streamline
the education system in a responsible manner.
This is impossible without the ouster of
Mr. Hazarika. As there is no sound without
a shot, we too, have reasons for our demand.
SEBA has proved its irresponsibility time
and again. It has totally failed to conduct
free and fair HSLC examinations in 2012
and 2013 and this was proved from the past
events that occurred to a large section of
students appearing for their board exams.
In 2012, many students did not receive their
admit cards before the examination and appeared
for exams without it. While conducting
exams, the security of question papers is
very important and is a serious matter in the
whole process. However, in Assam, question
papers were leaked before the examinations
and even then, the exams were conducted in
2012. The most embarrassing incident that
ever happened in the history of educational
boards in the country is the fact that answer
scripts were stored so irresponsibly that it
became fodder for cows . Many of them were
consumed by the animals in 2012.
The inefficiency of SEBA and irregularities
can be judged by the very fact that in the
state of Karnataka more than 13 lakhs students
appeared for their board exams, which
took place very smoothly, while in Assam the
number was around 3 lakhs 50 thousand. In
spite of this difference in the number of students,
the board has failed. We need to learn
from the developed systems in the other states
and from the
mistakes, as
these cannot
be entertained
every
year keeping the future of the students at
stake. The result of these irregularities can
already been seen with a large section of the
students shifting from the state board to the
central board. Those that are left now have
done so either due to the faith in the institution
or due to financial limitations.
Many students suffered this year after
the HSLC results were declared. It is shocking
to know that 3000 students were declared
absent in spite of appearing for the exams. In
subjects like Assamese, Science and Social
Science, the marks were not declared and the
report cards were blank, which resulted in
mental harassment for the students and their
parents. The chairman totally failed in the
conduct and proved how inefficient he is.
It has come to be known that the SEBA
chairman did not even consult with the examination
controller, SEBA secretary or any
board member before making important decisions.
Whatever he did, was his individual
decision and he always tried to impose it on
his subordinates. Administratively, Hazarika
has failed to maintain good relations with his
colleagues and had always tried to dominate
SEBA employees with his non-productive
decisions. In his tenure of three years, three
SEBA secretaries were replaced.
The AASU leadership has always demanded
his ouster and that is only for the
betterment of the quality of education to the
students who are considered the future of this
country. Mr Hazarika is also associated with
other organisations like NHPC and Amtron
in the meantime and has never been able to
bestow his full commitment towards SEBA.
He has always proven to be an irresponsible
administrator. AASU believes that his ouster
is the only option to reform the state’s educational
panel and systemise the education process
in Assam, keeping in mind the greater
interest of the state.
As an individual who is neither
connected with the functioning
of SEBA nor associated with
AASU, I feel that it may be inappropriate
for me to make any statements on
whether Shantikam Hazarika should
continue as SEBA chairperson. I feel, at
this juncture, we need to respect any enquiry
process that is initiated and wait
for the findings and the decisions taken
up by the government thereafter. However,
as a management professional, in
an attempt to look at the functioning of
SEBA and the organisational structure
and system built up over the years, I feel
that the initiatives taken up for bringing
in changes are commendable. Any
change that is being initiated in an organisation
will always face resistance
and more so in a government setup. It
all depends on the person at the helm
leading the organisation as to how the
change in process is pushed through.
The decision to change any system will
always have an element of uncertainty
and face initial hiccups. If we look at
the history of organisational change being
introduced by leaders in different
situations, we get enough evidence of
resistance and initial failures and It is
only over a period of time that change
is accepted and the system and structure
of the organisation start responding
to it. Looking into the dimension
of change envisaged in SEBA under the
chairmanship of Shantikam Hazarika,
I feel it is too early to jump to any conclusion.
There have no doubt been a few
incorrigible mistakes, but we need to see
whether the mistakes have been rectified
with sincerity and earnestness. We
sriporna Baruah
IIE
COuNTeR
POINT
also need to consider what the societal
cost and benefit of the proposed changes
will be, once they are introduced.
Leaving aside the experiences of
Shantikam Hazarika in SEBA, I would
like to highlight his contribution in
the field of Management education in
Northeast India. Being alumni of IIM
Ahmadabad and having given up his
career for the cause of Assam, for almost
25 years now, he has contributed
to developing management professionals
from this region and changing lives
of hundreds of management students.
Having had the opportunity of working
with him for almost a decade, I was fortunate
to get valuable inputs from him,
which helped me to not only broaden
my base of knowledge but also develop
the ability think laterally, which is so
important in today’s professional world.
In the Northeastern Region, Management
Education in the mid 80s was in
its infancy, but Shantikam Hazarika was
successful in transmitting the knowledge
he acquired and in grooming the
few professionals who worked with him
at the Assam Institute of Management.
Through us, he transmitted the same
to a large number of students who are
today well placed in the corporate and
government sector .These students today
feel confident and proud to have been
associated with the Assam Institute of
Management. I, along with the alumni
of AIM, would like to acknowledge his
contribution to the field of management
education in this region and strongly
feel that a visionary like him can successfully
bring about change in any organisation.

YOUR WEEKLY DOSE OF TIMEPASS
HOROSCOPE
ARIES
You don’t need to take the stairs
three steps at a time on Monday —
you’re not in that much of a rush. Yes,
you’re on a quest to get ahead and
make a name for yourself, but try to
stay grounded as well. Tuesday and
Wednesday are solid-gold days, full
of accomplishment and congratulatory
pats on the back. The excitement
leaves you exhausted. Thursday and
Friday you don’t have any energy left,
so find a comfortable couch under an
interesting ceiling and let your mind
wander. The weekend takes a lot out of
you — action, culture, foreigners and
spontaneity are themes — but at the
same time, it inspires you.
TAURUS
When someone launches into a
mini lecture on Monday, you turn the
tables on them and provide your own
philosophical version of how things are.
Your articulateness impresses them.
Tuesday and Wednesday lack any
such interactions — a squabble at work
or school swallows both days. Thursday
and Friday, it dawns on you that certain
goals of yours aren’t impossible anymore.
They may well be at your fingertips.
Discuss this realization with friends.
No need to rush anything this weekend.
On the other hand, once you know
what you want, it’s hard not to go for it.
GEMINI
There’s someone for whom you
once said you’d walk to the ends of
the Earth, and they say something rude
on Monday — bossy or insensitive or
just rude. This calls your friendship into
question. Maybe this person isn’t the
partner you thought they were. On
Tuesday, you have no answers, but
you’re not upset. It’s more like you’re curious.
You’re open to changes of heart.
A new point of view finds its way into
your brain on Wednesday. On Thursday
and Friday, you’re barely thinking
about any of this, what with all the
work-related confusion you’re trying to
sort out. On Sunday you’re dreaming
of the future, and it’s a fun activity.
Just For LauGhs
CANCER
Too bad it’s starting to feel like
summer, because all you feel like doing
on Monday is hibernating. Oh, to
be a bear! That’d be fun. You wouldn’t
have to worry about money, first of all,
which is all you think about on Tuesday
and Wednesday. Much to your surprise
— and delight — the week changes
gears on Thursday, and you have all
the time in the world to roam through
the woods and wade through streams
looking for fish (that is, if woods and
streams are what you’re in the mood
for). Friday is exploratory and possibly
solitary as well, but Saturday and Sunday
are social.
LEO
The way to counteract any sense
that you may be arrogant — a perception
floating around on Monday
— is to do something selfless. Consider
how satisfying it would be to do someone
else a favor and ask nothing in return.
Tuesday and Wednesday, apply
your fairly developed understanding
of the human ego to put out a fire, because
two of your prouder friends are
in a spat. Thursday and Friday, when it
dawns on you that you have far fewer
solutions to the problems around you
than perhaps you’d thought, put your
energy toward something creative. This
weekend, you learn a secret.
VIRGO
If you’ve been looking for love, it’s
going to show up wrapped in packing
material on your front porch on Monday,
or it’ll show up at your work, or
at the coffee shop you stop into on a
break. It’ll show up and it’ll be exciting.
If you’re not single, expect a bouquet
of roses instead. Tuesday and
Wednesday, buoyed by recent good
tides, you itch to make a change. You
feel bold and new. Thursday and Friday,
relationships are a major theme.
Best advice: Let bygones be bygones.
This weekend, grab an ice cream, head
to the park and leave your cell phone
at home.
Teacher: Do you know how long cows should be milked?
Pappu: The same as short ones.
LIBRA
The world is rocking like a boat
on Monday, and you’re having a hard
time getting your sea legs. What’s going
on? Is it you? (Answer: Yes!) The disorientation
is anomalous. By Tuesday,
you’re back to form. On Wednesday,
creativity and connection are prominent
themes — you’re the life of any
party. You’re working through too much
on Thursday to be much for chitchat.
The best way to approach Friday is
with your head down. You’re not sad
or anything; you’re just busy. Saturday
and Sunday, on the other hand, are
completely about relationships — business,
romantic and otherwise.
SCORPIO
You have the determination of
a warrior on Monday. Initiating new
plans, maintaining the lines of communication
— these come into play at the
start of the week. And these qualities
extend into all areas of your life. You’re
just as directed and focused in the
home realm on Tuesday and Wednesday,
but your efforts around the house
are somewhat less successful. For now.
You win some, you lose some. Thursday
and Friday, magically, are winners,
especially in the love department. You
get to dazzle someone with one of your
secret talents. Put in some exercise this
weekend.
SAGITTARIUS
You need to muster everything
you’ve got to focus on Monday. If you
have to work, you’ll while away the
hours doodling on Post-It notes. If you
have to water the lawn, you’ll probably
draw shapes in the sky with the
stream of water. Art is on your mind.
Tuesday and Wednesday, you relate
to others like you haven’t in a while,
and you might shake hands with a future
best friend. Thursday and Friday
are weirdly gloomy, considering it’s the
middle of summer and all. Listen to others
talk about the past; their stories can
lull you into a peaceful state of mind.
Saturday and Sunday are the opposite
of peaceful. Anticipate lots of noise.
CAPRICORN
You cross so many things off your
to-do list on Monday that your pen
may run out of ink. In fact, awards committees
may invent new prizes to celebrate
your accomplishments. Now that
you’re on the cover of magazines, what
are you going to do with the rest of
your life? Beware of people who might
try to attach themselves to your coattails
midweek. (Especially watch out for
people whose grand schemes involve
your money.) Thursday and Friday,
some creative writing is in order — you
need something to challenge you in a
new way. Check in with the family this
weekend.
AQUARIUS
The straight and narrow is very
comfortable to you on Monday. Stay
the course. Your friends are bouncing
around like rubber balls, but you’re
conserving energy. Then, on Tuesday
morning, you explode out of the gate.
Flowers turn to grow in your direction.
And Wednesday is like that, too —
you’re simply beaming. People treat
you like a movie star. Unfortunately,
on Thursday and Friday, your bank account
doesn’t reflect movie-star income.
(Speaking of your bank account, check
your balance. Something might be
screwy.) Saturday and Sunday, freedom
is the prevailing theme. You’re free
and agile as a bird. Take advantage.
PISCES
Someone you work with has the
answer on Monday. You just have to
know how to ask for it. (Try asking
sweetly.) On Tuesday and Wednesday,
your dreams are on your mind
so much that you have a hard time
deciphering between what has really
happened and what your subconscious
manufactured during the night. On
Thursday and Friday, get out of your
head by helping someone move,
pushing a car that won’t start or enthusiastically
supporting someone else’s
creative endeavors. Saturday and
Sunday return you to the dreamy state
of Tuesday and Wednesday. Your
mind must be telling you something.
Two guys went duck hunting. One drank a bottle and a half of whisky while the other kept watch. After two hours, a solitary duck flew up. The sober
man took aim but missed. “Quick,” he said to his drunken friend, “try and hit that duck.” The drunk waved his shotgun in the vague direction of the sky,
pulled the trigger and hit the duck. “That’s amazing,” said the sober one. “Not really,” replied the drunk. “When there’s a whole flock you can hardly miss!”
Otto von Bismarck, the first Chancellor of the German Empire from 1871-90 had been conversing for a rather long time with the British Ambassador
to Germany when the latter posed the question, “How do you handle insistent visitors who take up so much of your valuable time?” Bismark answered,
“Oh, I have an infallible method. My servant appears and informs me that my wife has something urgent to tell me.” At that moment there was a knock at
the door, and a servant entered with a message from his wife.
In the midst of a hectic day at the office, Santa got a phone call from his friend
Banta. Banta: Santa, I just bought an expensive diamond ring for my wife, Preeto.
I hope this won’t break up our long friendship? Santa: Hey Banta! Have you gone
crazy? Why should your buying your wife an expensive diamond ring break up
our friendship? After all, you are not taking it to my wife. Banta: But my wife is
taking it to your wife; she’s over to your house right now, showing it to your wife.
Q: Why do birds fly south for the winter?
A: It’s too far to walk.
Q: How many people can you fit in one Honda?
A: Well, the Bible said that all 12 disciples were in one Accord
Four blondes drive to a bar in their old pickup truck. Three sit in the cab and
one sits in the bed of the truck. The three blondes go into the bar and order a round
of shots. Almost an hour later, the fourth blonde finally joins them. “Where have
you been?” they ask. Clearly frustrated, she responds, “Well, you all forgot to open
the tail gate!”
Wirapol Sukphol is known as Thailand’s jet-setting fugitive monk
and his story has riveted the world with daily headlines of lavish excess,
promiscuity and alleged crimes ranging from statutory rape to
manslaughter. Until a month ago, 33-year old Wirapol Sukphol was
relatively unknown in Thailand. Now he is at the centre of the biggest
religious scandal. Despite the vows he took to lead a life of celibacy
and simplicity, Wirapol had a taste for luxury, police say. His excesses
first came to light in June with a YouTube video that went viral. It
showed the orange-robed monk in aviator sunglasses taking a private
jet ride with a Louis Vuitton carry-on. Since then, a long list of
darker secrets has emerged – including his accumulated assets of an
estimated 1 billion baht ($32 million). This week, authorities issued
an arrest warrant for the disgraced monk after having him defrocked
in absentia.
Nearly eight years after they were banned by the state government, Mumbai’s famous dance bars are set to reopen. The Supreme Court on Tuesday
upheld the right of an estimated 75,000 bar dancers to pursue their profession. The 2005 ban, championed by state home minister and NCP leader
R.R. Patil, barred girls from dancing in bars and restaurants but interestingly allowed it in hotels with a rating of three stars or above.
