Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) is a workshop focused on the learning <strong>of</strong> outdoor skills – skills usually associated with<br />

hunting <strong>and</strong> fishing, but useful for many outdoor pursuits. Designed primarily for women, it is an opportunity for anyone 18<br />

years <strong>of</strong> age or older, <strong>and</strong> is for you if…<br />

You have never tried these activities, but have hoped for an opportunity to learn,<br />

You are a beginner who hopes to improve your skills,<br />

You know how to do some <strong>of</strong> these activities, but would like to try your h<strong>and</strong> at some new ones,<br />

You are just looking for the camaraderie <strong>of</strong> like-minded individuals.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Kentucky</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fish</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Wildlife</strong> <strong>Resources</strong> (<strong>KDFWR</strong>) hosts workshops in partnership with<br />

support <strong>and</strong> sponsorship provided by the <strong>Kentucky</strong> <strong>Fish</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Wildlife</strong> Foundation, Remington, Federal,<br />

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17 – SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2012<br />

This Beyond BOW workshop is open to couples, singles <strong>and</strong> anyone 13 years or older (accompanied by<br />

an adult) interested in learning the ins <strong>and</strong> outs <strong>of</strong> hunting <strong>and</strong> fishing in <strong>Kentucky</strong><br />

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION<br />

<strong>The</strong> intent <strong>of</strong> this workshop is to present from A to Z, as much as time allows, something about every<br />

facet <strong>of</strong> the outdoor pursuits <strong>of</strong> hunting <strong>and</strong> fishing in <strong>Kentucky</strong>. Experienced hunters <strong>and</strong> anglers will<br />

field any question you have, <strong>and</strong> get you on target to take up, or get more out <strong>of</strong> your interests, whether<br />

in the woods, on the water, or both!<br />

<strong>The</strong> HUNTING PORTION <strong>of</strong> this workshop is designed to provide a comprehensive <strong>and</strong> detailed<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> nearly all hunting opportunities found in <strong>Kentucky</strong>. From squirrels, raccoons, rabbits,<br />

dove, waterfowl, turkey, deer to elk, it will help you become “field-savvy”, <strong>and</strong> prepare you for what you<br />

can expect to encounter regardless <strong>of</strong> which type <strong>of</strong> game you pursue. Game behavior <strong>and</strong> habitats will<br />

be discussed. Where <strong>and</strong> how to set up <strong>and</strong> techniques to employ will be covered. Laws, equipment,<br />

ethics, safety <strong>and</strong> tips for success <strong>and</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong> game for the table will all be incorporated.<br />

If possible, simulated hunting opportunities may be <strong>of</strong>fered. Time will be spent on the shotgun, rifle <strong>and</strong><br />

archery ranges.<br />

<strong>The</strong> FISHING PORTION <strong>of</strong> this workshop is intended to familiarize you with as many different kinds <strong>of</strong><br />

angling, what’s available <strong>and</strong> in which waters, <strong>and</strong> some basic proven techniques for success. Various<br />

types <strong>of</strong> equipment such as spinning <strong>and</strong> casting reels, rods <strong>and</strong> lures, will be displayed <strong>and</strong> how to use<br />

them properly explained <strong>and</strong> demonstrated. How to equip a boat for safety <strong>and</strong> fishing use will be<br />

presented. Preparing <strong>and</strong> cleaning fish will also be taught <strong>and</strong> information on creel limits <strong>and</strong> other<br />

fishing regulations will be shared.<br />

If possible, a simulated fishing opportunity may be <strong>of</strong>fered. Time will be spent on the water if weather<br />

permits.

registration not meet the required number <strong>of</strong> participants (30) the event will be cancelled with full<br />

reimbursement to registered participants.<br />
