Mix 50 grams sodium silicate into the water, then
add the clay . Decant mixture for 24 hours; siphon
off water . Lift out the top layer of slip with hands .
Yields 1 quart of thick slip . For application, thin
with additional water . Variations include adding
5% Gerstley borate without decanting, colored
stains added by eye, or using throwing water .
