FIRE
ISLANDS
The dog days of summer are nothing compared to the lava flows, hot coals and
erupting volcanoes in this month’s programs about the fiery islands of Fiji, Hawaii
and Krakatoa. Heating things up first is Fiji Firewalkers (8/15 at 10:30pm), a new
documentary exploring Fiji’s people, land and culture, narrated by Grammy award-winner
Paul Horn. Rich in colorful, vibrant music, the film chronicles the origins of
a Polynesian people whose civilization dates back to 700 BC and spotlights
the legendary firewalkers of Beqa Island.
August 25 is a volcanic tripleheader starting with Nature: Kilauea:
Mountain of Fire (8pm) about the world’s most active volcano on
Hawaii’s Big Island. Filmmaker Paul Atkins captures a sight few
have ever beheld: the cataclysmic meeting of 2,000-degree lava
and 75-degree ocean water — a spectacular moment that creates
new land. Hawaii: Roots of Fire (9pm) reveals the hidden forces
that drive the islands’ large, active volcanic system. The new
documentary follows earth scientists as they compile evidence to
explain the source of the huge quantities of lava erupting out of
Hawaii’s volcanoes. Krakatoa (9:30pm) revisits the events that led to the May 20, 1883 eruption
of the Indonesian volcano, which reduced the island to a third of its former size and killed 36,000
people. The documentary links Krakatoa’s destruction — previously the Indian Ocean’s most devastating
tsunami — to the December 26, 2004 tsunami.

We’re proud to announce the launch
of MetroFocus, WNET’s multi-platform
local media initiative covering news,
culture and life in and around New
york. The MetroFocus website —
thirteen.org/metrofocus — will evolve
in the coming months into a mobile
application and a broadcast on both
WLIW21 and THIRTEEN. Designed to
examine the issues and challenges
unique to life in the nation’s biggest
metropolis, MetroFocus explores our
identity as New yorkers, what draws
us here, what keeps us here in spite
of it all, and what we’d like to change.
