The dog days of summer are nothing compared to the lava flows, hot coals and<br />

erupting volcanoes in this month’s programs about the fiery islands of Fiji, Hawaii<br />

and Krakatoa. Heating things up first is Fiji Firewalkers (8/<strong>15</strong> at <strong>10</strong>:<strong>30pm</strong>), a new<br />

documentary exploring Fiji’s people, land and culture, narrated by Grammy award-winner<br />

Paul Horn. Rich in colorful, vibrant music, the film chronicles the origins of<br />

a Polynesian people whose civilization dates back to 700 BC and spotlights<br />

the legendary firewalkers of Beqa Island.<br />

August 25 is a volcanic tripleheader starting with Nature: Kilauea:<br />

Mountain of Fire (8pm) about the world’s most active volcano on<br />

Hawaii’s Big Island. Filmmaker Paul <strong>At</strong>kins captures a sight few<br />

have ever beheld: the cataclysmic meeting of 2,000-degree lava<br />

and 75-degree ocean water — a spectacular moment that creates<br />

new land. Hawaii: Roots of Fire (9pm) reveals the hidden forces<br />

that drive the islands’ large, active volcanic system. The new<br />

documentary follows earth scientists as they compile evidence to<br />

explain the source of the huge quantities of lava erupting out of<br />

Hawaii’s volcanoes. Krakatoa (9:<strong>30pm</strong>) revisits the events that led to the May 20, 1883 eruption<br />

of the Indonesian volcano, which reduced the island to a third of its former size and killed 36,000<br />

people. The documentary links Krakatoa’s destruction — previously the Indian Ocean’s most devastating<br />

tsunami — to the December 26, 2004 tsunami.
