THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH OF
ST. GREGORY BARBARIGO
Garnerville, New York 10923
Serving the Catholic Community
in North Rockland since 1961
FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
March 18, 2012
THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
Confessions are heard on Saturday afternoon from 4:00 to 5:00 PM and
anytime upon reasonable request.
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Second and third Sundays at 2:00 PM. Expectant parents may contact the
parish office to arrange for the baptism seminar at 7:30 PM on the first
Monday of each month to help them understand the beauty and responsibilities
of the sacrament. Adults are baptized and confirmed at the Easter
Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation.
THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY
Since Catholic marriage requires a time of preparation, arrangements
should begin at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding
to allow for the Marriage Preparation Program and Natural Family Planning
(NFP). Registered, participating and contributing parishioners may contact
the parish office to begin the process.
PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK
If you are planning to enter the hospital for surgery, experiencing a prolonged
or serious illness, or are very weak due to advancement of age, call
the parish office to arrange for the sacraments of reconciliation, communion
and anointing at home, also available every Saturday morning at 9:00
AM Mass. Communal anointing of the sick is celebrated at Mass each April
and October. Notify us or the Catholic chaplain at Good Samaritan, Helen
Hayes and Nyack of any hospitalization so that we may be of assistance. Be
sure to tell the admitting office that you are a Catholic patient and a member
of St. Gregory Barbarigo parish.
PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL is open all day and night
for Eucharistic adoration and is located at the south end of the campus on
Cinder Road in front of the parish house. Parishioners and friends are encouraged
to become adorers or to stop in and spend some time in quiet
prayer with the Lord.
WELCOME The St. Gregory Barbarigo faith community warmly welcomes
you. Please introduce yourself to Father LaMorte as you leave church so
that, on behalf of the entire community we may greet you. You can register
at the parish office and pick up an informational packet. Kindly notify us of
any change of address.
MISSION STATEMENT
St. Gregory Barbarigo parish is a Christian community of disciples in the Roman Catholic tradition, called by Jesus, united in Eucharistic
worship and growing in faith, hope and love. Nourished through the sacraments and strengthened by God’s transforming
love, we are empowered to know the gospel message and to witness it to others. As Christian stewards, we are thankful
for God’s many gifts and we commit ourselves to share our time, talent and treasure in Christ-like service within our parish
community and beyond. We seek God’s blessing and guidance to be faithful to this mission.

OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD
There has been a lot of misinformation over the
suffocating Health and Human Services mandates lately.
It is important for each of us to know that it is about
religious freedom, pure and simple; about the
government attempting to force the Church to violate its
conscience. It is not about partisan politics; it is not anti-
Obama; it is not just a Catholic issue; it is not some bishops’
hangup; it is not anti-women’s health; it is not about
contraception.
Cardinal Dolan has written to each parish once again
and has asked that we pastors keep our people informed on
the real issues at hand. These mandates are an unwarranted
and unprecedented intrusion by the federal government into
the internal life of the Church, which we will continue to
oppose. The cardinal reminds us that we will continue to seek
legislative remedies, as well as justice in the courts. And we
will continue to educate and advocate, so that what is really
at stake will not get lost in the rhetoric from those who would
seek to portray the Church as out of touch with its people, or
simply opposed to health care for women. (That last charge
is particularly insulting, given that the Catholic Church has
advocated for universal health care for nearly a century, and
our record on providing health care to all, particularly to
women and children, is second to none. If one were really
concerned about the health of women, one would want to
protect the integrity of Catholic healthcare, which provides it
so well.) Please know that this fight is not something that our
bishops sought, and it is not something that they relish. All
we have asked is that the Church be left alone to continue
doing the good work in education, charity, and health care
that we have always done, that at least the very narrow and
rigid exemption be expanded to include the freedom of
religion that this country was founded upon, and that the
rights of conscience of the Church and her institutions be
protected.
Thank you all fo r your interest and support of this
issue. His Eminence wants you to know of his deep gratitude
for the unity and encouragement that you have provided to
the bishops and to him personally. Keep informed by reading
his blog, THE GOSPEL IN THE DIGITAL AGE at http://blog.archny.org.
WASHING OF THE FEET Each year, our
parish needs twelve people, of both genders
and different ages to have their feet washed
on Holy Thursday at the Evening Mass of the
Lord’s Supper. Just as the priest is not Jesus,
these twelve are not the apostles. But the priest by his
ordination has been ordered to be alter Christus, another
Christ, and each of us by our baptism have become members
of the church founded on the apostles and aiming for
salvation. If you feel the call to be one of the twelve this year,
please volunteer by calling Father at the office.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK “If one member suffers in the Body of
Christ, which is the Church, all members suffer with that member.”
(1Cor12:26) The sacrament of the anointing of the sick is the
proper sacrament for those Catholics whose health is seriously
impaired by sickness or age. On Saturday, April 21 st at 9:00
AM, we will celebrate this sacrament and we invite our
parishioners to come and join in prayer for those among us
who experience the effects of illness or age. If you know
someone, or if you yourself intend to participate, please call
Father at the parish office (947-1873).
MEN’S BREAKFAST The next Men’s
Breakfast will be held on Saturday, April 28 th
at 7:30 AM at Sonoma Grill, which is located
at the Phillip J. Rotella Golf Course at 200
Thiells Mount Ivy Road. The guest speaker
will be William T. Sullivan, president and CEO of Ronald
McDonald House of New York. The cost is $13 per person,
which includes an open buffet breakfast of bacon, sausage,
eggs, hash browns and unlimited coffee and juice. To reserve
a place please contact Diego Aviles via email at
ARCHDIOCESAN STEWARDSHIP APPEAL SHARING GOD’S GIFTS Thanks to all of you who have so generously responded to this year’s
charitable campaign and last week’s In Pew Solicitation. 119 people pledged an additional $35,000. For this appeal to be truly
successful, we must have the support of all of our families. The appeal is a vital source of funding for the programs and ministries
that sustain the parishes across our archdiocese. It is not too late to make your gift. Pledge cards are in the narthex and may be
returned to the parish office or placed in the offertory basket at Mass. Not everyone can give a lot, but we hope you will give what
you can afford, especially spread across five months. Many people have found a gift of $100 ($20 a month) to be a sacrificial level they
can give. All donors, of any amount, will be thanked by Cardinal Dolan. We look forward to providing you an update on the appeal’s
progress each week. Thank you for your generosity and good faith.
APPEAL UPDATE ($88,000 GOAL ~~ 600 GIFTS)
HOLY THURSDAY PILGRIMAGE OF CHURCH VISITATION At the end of the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, we
carry the Blessed Sacrament in solemn procession around the church and “repose” the Sacrament in the repository
for solemn adoration until eleven o’clock. Following a moment of silent prayer, you are invited to take a trip to
three other churches within the neighborhood to pray before their altars of repose – to take a long walk (by car,
mostly) to adore the Lord as we begin the celebration of His passion, death and resurrection. This practice of visiting
churches on Holy Thursday night is an old and popular Catholic custom. After the Last Supper of Jesus, he journeyed to the Garden
of Gethsemane. There, he prayed until the time of his arrest, leading to his crucifixion commemorated on Good Friday. It is that
“night watch of the Lord” we remember when we visit a church on Holy Thursday evening. It is a time to watch and pray with the Lord.
It is a remarkably special and prayerful experience. Why not make this pilgrimage of faith, to watch with the Lord in prayer on this
holy night, and to adore Him, present in the Blessed Sacrament? Your sacrifice of time and effort, for love of Him, will not go
unnoticed by the Lord. Come and grow in your love and devotion for Jesus who gave his life that we might have life eternal.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be conducted every Friday morning during Lent right after the morning Mass at 9:30 AM. On Friday,
March 30 th , LIVING STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be presented at 7:00 PM with a dramatization by our young people of our school. If you
have seen this in the past, you will definitely be moved. On Good Friday, April 6 th , stations will be held at 12:00 noon.
CONFESSIONS DURING LENT The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be celebrated on the Saturdays of Lent from 4:00
to 5:00 PM; and during Holy Week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th right after 9:00 AM
Masses. In addition, on April 2 nd , the Archdiocese of New York and the Dioceses of Brooklyn and Rockville Centre
will be hosting RECONCILIATION MONDAY. In every parish in the metropolitan area, there will be a priest available for
confession from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM. There will be newspaper ads and radio spots encouraging penitents to come home to the Lord
at Easter. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity. There will be more coming in the weeks ahead.
MASS OF THE CHRISM On April 2, our chief shepherd, Archbishop Timothy Dolan and the priests of the archdiocese will concelebrate
this 4:00 PM Mass at which the holy oils that are used for the sacraments will be blessed and all will renew their ordination promises.
Your participation is greatly encouraged. Round trip transportation will again be available at St. Francis of Assisi in West Nyack.
Consider being with us this very beautiful day.
