MOSQUITO CONTROL
Mosquitoes are an all too familiar summer nuisance. They are not only annoying,
but they can be transmitters of encephalitis, malaria, yellow fever and
West Nile virus to humans and heartworm to pets.
The City of Perrysburg’s plan is to spray the entire city weekly. This will be
done one evening per week, starting around dusk until midnight. Weather and
wind speed determine which night we can spray. Standing water, which may
be found in street catch-basins, subdivision drains, roadside ditches and flood
plains, are a few places where mosquitoes breed. You can help reduce mosquito-breeding
sources in your yard in the following ways:
• Get rid of old tires, tin cans, buckets, drums, bottles or any water holding
containers
• Fill in or drain any low places (puddles, ruts) in yard
• Keep drains, ditches, drainage swales and culverts clean of weeds and
trash so water will drain properly
• Cover trash containers to keep out rain water
• Repair leaky pipes and outside faucets
• Empty plastic wading pool at least once a week and store it indoors
when not in use
• Make sure your backyard pool is properly cared for while on vacation
• Fill in tree rot holes and hollow stumps that hold water with sand or
concrete
• Change the water in bird baths and plant pots or drip trays at least
once weekly
• Keep grass cut short and shrubbery well trimmed around the house so
adult mosquitoes will not hide there
The product the City of Perrysburg uses for mosquito control, Duet, is scientifically
synergized to maximize the effectiveness against mosquito populations
yet maintains the lowest level of toxicity to man and other non-target
organisms.
Mosquito dunks for standing water are free and available to city residents.
Residents can get up to 8 dunks per year. Stop by the Department of Public
Service at 11980 Roachton Road, between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday
through Friday.
For any questions you may have, contact the Department of Public Service at
419-872-8020.
