Watershed Science and
Technical Conference
Thayer Hotel, West Point, NY
1 2007 Watershed Science and Technical Conference

2011 Watershed Science and Technical Conference
September 15–16, Thayer Hotel, West Point, NY
The 2011 Watershed Science and Technical Conference is once
again poised to present the scientific leading edge of watershed
protection and water quality management. In addition to the
presentation of new findings and information developed since last
year’s meeting, we will take an important look forward this year
as well.
It’s no secret that our partners at New York City Environmental
Protection are always busily engaged in planning and engineering
for the future of the nation’s largest unfiltered water supply. Staying
years ahead of meeting today’s drinking water needs for more than
9 million New Yorkers isn’t easy on a good day – and it gets even
tougher when one of your aqueducts springs a leak. Yes, in addition
to the normal array of system infrastructure maintenance,
replacement and upgrade, New York City has been engaged in an
unprecedented scientific and engineering initiative to address leaks
in a portion of the aqueduct that connects the Rondout Reservoir in
Ulster County to the West Branch Reservoir in Putnam County. The
leaks release between 15 and 35 million gallons of water a day.
Attendees at this year’s conference will hear firsthand about how
DEP plans to build a three-mile bypass tunnel around a portion of
Organizers
The New York Water Environment
Association, Inc. (NYWEA) – Founded
in 1929, by professionals in the field of
water quality as a non-profit, educational
organization. Association members helped
lead the way toward existing state and
national clean water programs. Today
the Association has over 2,500 members
representing diverse backgrounds and
specialties, but all are concerned and
involved with protecting and enhancing
our precious water resources.
The New York State Department of
Environmental Conservation – Exists to
conserve, improve, and protect New York
State’s natural resources and environment,
and control water, land and air pollution,
in order to enhance the health, safety and
welfare of the people of the state and their
overall economic and social well being.
the aqueduct that is leaking, and repair other leaks from the inside
of the existing tunnel. “The construction of the bypass tunnel and
the repair of the lining will ensure that DEP can continue to deliver
high quality drinking water every day for decades to come,”
says DEP.
This conference continues its long history of bringing scientists,
engineers and technical experts together with watershed stakeholders
and the public, to unveil the most current scientific trends
and data regarding the New York City Watershed and other water
supplies across the country.
Who should attend? Elected officials, directors of public works,
buildings, planning and highway departments, land use planners,
consulting engineers, regulated industries, attorneys, educators,
environmental groups and interested citizens, and everyone
interested in clean water. Conference attendees will find themselves
in a unique forum for collaboration, providing an opportunity to
enhance information and technology transfer and increase
coordination among the array of entities working with watershed
protection science.
The Watershed Protection and
Partnership Council – Created by
the historic New York City Watershed
Memorandum of Agreement to provide
a regional forum to aid in the longterm
protection of New York City’s drinking
water, and the economic vitality of the
Upstate Watershed communities.
