The 22 nd Year of “Caring and Sharing in a Changing World”
Theme and Message from our President:
"Clubwomen, like leaves, enhance the world in every phase."
Happy Birthday Ladies of the WCOT!!
We’ve come a long way baby! Remember that old marketing line? In the fall of 1989, we sat in Pam and Bob’s Pizza Shop
determined to find a way to remain a part of Federation even if nearly all of us were working full time and knew that daytime
meetings were out of the question. You honored me as your first President, Federation welcomed us, and Lynn Avery navigated the
IRS waters to obtain our 501c(3) exemption. We set out trying to keep as many of the traditions we knew from Juniors as possible:
symbols, themes, Birthday meetings with other club presidents, newsletters, scrapbooks, and the Federation cornerstones, the
Departments. We did not want to suggest that we were limiting our membership to VA Beach and thus, the name Tidewater.
Initially, we had members from Portsmouth and Norfolk, too. Our first newsletter went out in October 1990 and Jane Ann Snyder
was our first newsletter chairman. At first we grew but over the last many years have remained stable with a core group of about
1/3 fewer than our highest numbers. Recently, we’ve added some new faces and are very grateful for them.
This Wednesday, we celebrate again. We no longer invite other local club Presidents primarily because we are rarely able to attend
theirs. Fundraising is always a challenge but the money helps us help others through our scholarship in Ann Kay’s Mom’s memory
and the good work we want to do in the Community Service Programs. This year, as you know, fundraising got a boost as a result of
a lead provided by another federated club. All of this means we are doing well. We thank Jean for reporting our good works to
Federation and we look forward to Spring District meeting on the 24th.
I kept a few items from our days as a new club. Our first theme was: “Build a Foundation in Federation and Friendship”. Our club
motto remains: “Caring and Sharing in a Changing World”. Well, ladies. We’ve done it. We’ve given thousands of dollars and
thousands of hours. We’ve been there for each other through illnesses, losses, happy times, and hard times. We’ve made friends,
kept friends, and some friends now feel like family. It’s a lot to celebrate. I could go on and on...... which is what I hope for this club.
In Federation Friendship and Love,
Marilyn
