Carol H. Stewart ’82 is <strong>2008</strong> <strong>Law</strong>yer in Residence<br />

The <strong>Law</strong>yer in Residence program at<br />

<strong>Samford</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s <strong>Cumberland</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> recognizes the accomplishments<br />

<strong>of</strong> law school alumni.Each year,a<br />

distinguished practitioner is invited to spend<br />

two days on campus as the lawyer in residence,<br />

speaking to a variety <strong>of</strong> classes related to the<br />

lawyer’s area <strong>of</strong> practice,and meeting with<br />

students in formal and informal settings.This<br />

unique educational program allows students to<br />

augment the traditional curriculum with the<br />

experiences <strong>of</strong> current practitioners.<br />

Carol H. Stewart ’82 practices in the<br />

Real Estate and Litigation sections at Burr<br />

& Forman, LLP, focusing in the area <strong>of</strong><br />

condominium law and business torts litigation.<br />

She is the author <strong>of</strong> the “Condominium<br />

<strong>Law</strong>” chapter in Legal Aspects <strong>of</strong> Real Estate.<br />

In 1994, she completed the Alabama section<br />

in Real Estate Transaction Series: Condominium<br />

<strong>Law</strong> and Practice (Matthew Bender). She is a<br />

regular lecturer in the areas <strong>of</strong> condominium<br />

law and homeowners associations.<br />

Stewart was admitted to the Alabama<br />

and Georgia Bars in 1982, the Florida Bar<br />

the following year, and recently to the<br />

Tennessee Bar. She served a nine-year term<br />

on the Board <strong>of</strong> Bar Commissioners <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Alabama State Bar, and served on the<br />

Disciplinary Commission and the MCLE<br />

Commission. She is panel chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Character and Fitness Committee and on<br />

the MCLE Rules, Regulations and<br />

Enforcement Committee. She has served as<br />

chairman <strong>of</strong> the Business Torts and<br />

Antitrust Section <strong>of</strong> the State Bar.<br />

Stewart served on the Executive<br />

Committee <strong>of</strong> the Birmingham Bar<br />

Association in 2000 and is a past president<br />

<strong>Cumberland</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> the Women’s Section <strong>of</strong> the Birmingham<br />

Bar. She is a member <strong>of</strong> the American Bar<br />

Association,Alabama State Bar, State Bar <strong>of</strong><br />

Georgia, the Florida Bar, and the Tennessee<br />

Bar Association. She serves on the Alabama<br />

<strong>Law</strong> Institute, Real Estate, and is a Fellow<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Alabama <strong>Law</strong> Foundation and the<br />

American Bar Foundation. She is listed in<br />

The Best <strong>Law</strong>yers in America and Chambers<br />

USA for her work in real estate law.<br />

Stewart received the L. Burton Barnes<br />

Award for Public Service in 2001 from the<br />

Birmingham Bar Association. In 2003, she<br />

receivedVolunteer <strong>of</strong> theYear from<br />

<strong>Cumberland</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> and the Board<br />

Member <strong>of</strong> theYear Award from Hand-in-Paw.<br />

Stewart received her B.S. in chemistry<br />

from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> North Carolina at<br />

Charlotte and her M.S. degree in forensic<br />

sciences from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Alabama at<br />

Birmingham. She received her J.D., magna<br />

cum laude, from <strong>Cumberland</strong>. During law<br />

school, she served as <strong>Law</strong> Day Chair and<br />

Recent Decisions Editor for the<br />

<strong>Cumberland</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Review. Upon graduation,<br />

she became law clerk to Chief Judge Sam<br />

C. Pointer, Jr. <strong>of</strong> the U.S. District Court for<br />

the Northern District <strong>of</strong> Alabama. She has<br />

served the law school in recent years as the<br />

Birmingham Club and the Annual Funds<br />

Chairperson. For the past five years, she has<br />

served on the Advisory Board.<br />

Stewart’s passions include her grandchildren,<br />

Judson and Alice McLean, and<br />

rescuing homeless dogs. She and her<br />

husband, Rusty, have five dogs, and have<br />

fostered hundreds <strong>of</strong> abandoned dogs and<br />

puppies from local animal shelters. She has<br />

devoted years <strong>of</strong> service to animal organizations,<br />

including serving as board president<br />

<strong>of</strong> Hand-in-Paw, an animal-assisted therapy<br />

organization, and the Greater Birmingham<br />

Humane Society. She participated in Big<br />

Brothers/Big Sisters for more than 10<br />

years, and is a member <strong>of</strong> the Cathedral<br />

Church <strong>of</strong> the Advent and the Women’s<br />

Network. She was a 1999 participant in<br />

Leadership Birmingham and formerly<br />

served on the Board <strong>of</strong> Pathways, an organization<br />

that serves homeless women and<br />

children.<br />

Currently, she serves as secretarytreasurer<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Directors <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Community Real Estate Foundation. <br />
