2010 <strong>Missouri</strong> <strong>Western</strong> Griffon Football Game 9 vs. Emporia <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
Passing Attack: Senior quarterback Drew<br />
Newhart is on pace to break numerous records<br />
at MWSU. He is just 360 passing yards short<br />
of breaking the school record for passing yards<br />
in career which is held by Kasey Waterman<br />
with 10,025. He needs to average 120.00<br />
yards in his next three games. He is also 12<br />
passing touchdowns away from an MIAA and<br />
school record for touchdowns thrown in a<br />
career which is 98 held by Kasey Waterman.<br />
He tied the school record for TD passes<br />
in a game with five against Northern <strong>State</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>. He threw for a career high 383<br />
yards against <strong>Missouri</strong> Southern on October<br />
24. Newhart<br />
and Cedric<br />
Houston hooked<br />
up for a 98 yard<br />
touchdown<br />
early last<br />
season breaking<br />
the record<br />
for longest<br />
pass play and<br />
play from<br />
scrimmage.<br />
Newhart has<br />
thrown for 16<br />
touchdowns<br />
and just four<br />
interception<br />
this season. He<br />
broke the school<br />
record for most yards passing in a game with<br />
412 against Truman <strong>State</strong> this season. He has<br />
targeted Andrew Mead 34 times for 452 yards<br />
and seven touchdowns. Newhart is 2-1 against<br />
the Lions in his career. Last season Newhart<br />
threw for 383 yards and three touchdowns.a<br />
He has thrown for a TD in 18 of his last 19<br />
games. Newhart broke the career record<br />
for completions which was 730 by Kasey<br />
Waterman. Drew has 736 entering this weeks<br />
game.<br />
Turnover Margin:<br />
The Griffon<br />
defense has gotten<br />
numerous turnovers<br />
this season. They<br />
lead the leauge in<br />
trunover margin at<br />
+7. They are second<br />
in the league with 16<br />
interceptions. Shane<br />
Simpson, Deondre<br />
Williams and Matt<br />
Glades all have<br />
two interceptions<br />
on the season. <strong>Western</strong> has had two or more<br />
interceptions in four games this year which<br />
includes 5 against Mesa <strong>State</strong> in the season<br />
opener. <strong>Western</strong> has also recovered four of the<br />
nine fumbles forced this season.<br />
Receiving Depth: Senior<br />
receiver Andrew Mead has<br />
had a solid senior campaign<br />
catching 35 passes for 460<br />
yards and seven touchdowns.<br />
He tied his career high with<br />
nine passes for a career best<br />
166 yards last Saturday<br />
against Truman <strong>State</strong>. He also<br />
caught nine passes against<br />
Pittsburg <strong>State</strong>. At least six<br />
different players have caught<br />
passes in each game this<br />
season.<br />
Giving it the Boot: Beckwith is tied with 11<br />
field goals made this season. He also leads<br />
the league in field goal percentage making<br />
11-of-12 attempts. Beckwith was named the<br />
MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week twice<br />
this season. The senior from Cameron, Mo.,<br />
connected on a new MWSU single-game record<br />
for field goals in a game<br />
with five (33, 24, 29, 23<br />
and 32 yards) scoring<br />
18 of the Griffons 36<br />
points against Mesa<br />
<strong>State</strong>. He broke the<br />
old record of four,<br />
which was set by Clay<br />
Rush in 1994 against<br />
Southwest Minnesota<br />
<strong>State</strong>. Beckwith also<br />
does the kickoff duties<br />
and the punting for the<br />
Griffons. He also set the<br />
school record for most<br />
extra points in a game with 10 against Lincoln.<br />
Beckwith has connected on 9-of-10 field goal<br />
attempts this season and 26-of-27 extra points.<br />
He has hit three or more field goals in two games<br />
this season.<br />
Total Defense: <strong>Western</strong> is second in the league<br />
in pass defense giving up 178.5 yards per game.<br />
The Emporia <strong>State</strong> Hornets are third in pass<br />
defense giving up just 192.0 yards per contest.<br />
Overall Emporia <strong>State</strong> is second in the league<br />
in total defense giving up just 335.9 yards per<br />
game while the Griffons are sixth giving up<br />
378.2 yards per contest.<br />
Griffon Football 2010<br />
Success in the Classroom:<br />
<strong>Missouri</strong> <strong>Western</strong> junior offensive<br />
lineman, Steven Jones (Palmyra,<br />
Mo.) was named to the CoSida<br />
Academic All-America Second<br />
Team which was voted on by<br />
the nations Sports Information<br />
Directors and released Tuesday,<br />
November 24. Jones was named<br />
to the CoSIDA Academic All-<br />
District 7 First Team back on November 5.<br />
Jones holds a 3.92 GPA in business management<br />
and has started at left tackle the last 23 games<br />
dating back to the 2008. The Griffon senior<br />
Nathan Martin was named the MWSU Male<br />
Student Athlete of the Year. This marked the<br />
fourth year in a row that a Griffon football<br />
player earned those honors. Twenty four<br />
different Griffons earned All-MIAA Scholar<br />
Awards in 2009-10.<br />
Griffons Ranked:<br />
The <strong>Missouri</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Griffons<br />
fell out of the D2Football.com poll which was<br />
released on Tuesday, October 26. The Griffons<br />
were ranked 8th earlier this season for three<br />
weeks in a row.<br />
The <strong>Missouri</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Griffons<br />
remain out of this weeks AFCA Division II<br />
Coaches’ Top-25 poll which was released<br />
Monday, October 25. <strong>Western</strong> was ranked as<br />
high as 8th this season. This marks the second<br />
straight week that the Griffons have been out of<br />
the poll. .
