4 2010 Missouri Western Griffon Football Game 9 vs. Emporia State University Passing Attack: Senior quarterback Drew Newhart is on pace to break numerous records at MWSU. He is just 360 passing yards short of breaking the school record for passing yards in career which is held by Kasey Waterman with 10,025. He needs to average 120.00 yards in his next three games. He is also 12 passing touchdowns away from an MIAA and school record for touchdowns thrown in a career which is 98 held by Kasey Waterman. He tied the school record for TD passes in a game with five against Northern State University. He threw for a career high 383 yards against Missouri Southern on October 24. Newhart and Cedric Houston hooked up for a 98 yard touchdown early last season breaking the record for longest pass play and play from scrimmage. Newhart has thrown for 16 touchdowns and just four interception this season. He broke the school record for most yards passing in a game with 412 against Truman State this season. He has targeted Andrew Mead 34 times for 452 yards and seven touchdowns. Newhart is 2-1 against the Lions in his career. Last season Newhart threw for 383 yards and three touchdowns.a He has thrown for a TD in 18 of his last 19 games. Newhart broke the career record for completions which was 730 by Kasey Waterman. Drew has 736 entering this weeks game. Turnover Margin: The Griffon defense has gotten numerous turnovers this season. They lead the leauge in trunover margin at +7. They are second in the league with 16 interceptions. Shane Simpson, Deondre Williams and Matt Glades all have two interceptions on the season. Western has had two or more interceptions in four games this year which includes 5 against Mesa State in the season opener. Western has also recovered four of the nine fumbles forced this season. Receiving Depth: Senior receiver Andrew Mead has had a solid senior campaign catching 35 passes for 460 yards and seven touchdowns. He tied his career high with nine passes for a career best 166 yards last Saturday against Truman State. He also caught nine passes against Pittsburg State. At least six different players have caught passes in each game this season. Giving it the Boot: Beckwith is tied with 11 field goals made this season. He also leads the league in field goal percentage making 11-of-12 attempts. Beckwith was named the MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week twice this season. The senior from Cameron, Mo., connected on a new MWSU single-game record for field goals in a game with five (33, 24, 29, 23 and 32 yards) scoring 18 of the Griffons 36 points against Mesa State. He broke the old record of four, which was set by Clay Rush in 1994 against Southwest Minnesota State. Beckwith also does the kickoff duties and the punting for the Griffons. He also set the school record for most extra points in a game with 10 against Lincoln. Beckwith has connected on 9-of-10 field goal attempts this season and 26-of-27 extra points. He has hit three or more field goals in two games this season. Total Defense: Western is second in the league in pass defense giving up 178.5 yards per game. The Emporia State Hornets are third in pass defense giving up just 192.0 yards per contest. Overall Emporia State is second in the league in total defense giving up just 335.9 yards per game while the Griffons are sixth giving up 378.2 yards per contest. Griffon Football 2010 Success in the Classroom: Missouri Western junior offensive lineman, Steven Jones (Palmyra, Mo.) was named to the CoSida Academic All-America Second Team which was voted on by the nations Sports Information Directors and released Tuesday, November 24. Jones was named to the CoSIDA Academic All- District 7 First Team back on November 5. Jones holds a 3.92 GPA in business management and has started at left tackle the last 23 games dating back to the 2008. The Griffon senior Nathan Martin was named the MWSU Male Student Athlete of the Year. This marked the fourth year in a row that a Griffon football player earned those honors. Twenty four different Griffons earned All-MIAA Scholar Awards in 2009-10. Griffons Ranked: The Missouri Western State University Griffons fell out of the D2Football.com poll which was released on Tuesday, October 26. The Griffons were ranked 8th earlier this season for three weeks in a row. The Missouri Western State University Griffons remain out of this weeks AFCA Division II Coaches’ Top-25 poll which was released Monday, October 25. Western was ranked as high as 8th this season. This marks the second straight week that the Griffons have been out of the poll. .
2010 Missouri Western Griffon Football Game 9 vs. Emporia State University Last time out for the Hornets.. ESU FOOTBALL FALLS ON HOMECOMING TO TSU October 23, 2010-Emporia State gave up a ten point fourth quarter lead as they fell to Truman 37-34 in Welch Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets led 34-24 with 8:51 left in the game before the Bulldogs score 13 points in the final 4:47 to take the lead. ESU took a 7-0 lead on Kevin Smart’s one yard touchdown run with 3:20 left in the first quarter. Truman came back to tie it on a five yard run by Harnish Ayora with 17 seconds left in the quarter following a Tyler Eckenrode fumble at the four yard line. The Hornets retook the lead when David Harris blocked a Bulldog punt and Taylor Beitler returned it ten yards for a touchdown with 10:32 left in the half. Will Mosquera tied the game for Truman with a three yard touchdown run with 55 seconds left in the half. Sheldon Smith, who played the second half in place of injured starter Tyler Eckenrode, fumbled on the Hornets first possession of the second half. Derek Koon converted a 23 yard field goal following the fumble to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the game. On the next play from scrimmage for the Hornets Derwin Hall took the ball 65 yards for a touchdown and ESU retook the lead at 20-17 with 8:56 left in the third. Wayne Burgess picked off a pass for the third straight game and four plays later Hall scored his second touchdown of the day to give ESU a 27-17 lead with 6:27 left in the third. Truman pulled back within a field goal on Donald Harvey’s 20 yard touchdown run with 2:35 left in the third quarter. Josh Taylor picked off Conrad Schottel with just over 12 minutes left which led to an Adrian Abner 12 yard touchdown run with 8:51 remaining in the game and a 34-24 Hornet lead. The Bulldogs went on a six play, 71 yard drive culminating with a seven yard pass touchdown pass from Phillip Davis to Caleb Roberts with 4:47 remaining in the game. Abner would fumble on first down from the ESU 20 on the next possession and Michael Elliott recovered to set up the final score for TSU. Chris Woods blocked the PAT attempt to keep ESU within a field goal at 37-34 with 2:00 left in the game. Julian Dozier returned the kick-off to the ESU 30 to start the Hornets final drive. Smith gained four yards on a scramble on first down and after a false start was sacked for a loss of six yards on second down. Smith connected with Matt Coursen for a gain of 11 yards on third and 17 but his pass to Brian Murphy was broken up by Terrence Byrd on fourth down. ESU finished with a season high 252 yards rushing on 45 carries. Hall had a career best 90 yards on four rushes with two touchdowns for the Hornets. Davis had 19 carries for 96 yards and was 13 of 23 for 165 yards, two interceptions and two touchdowns for Truman. Dallas Grier was the leading receiver in the game with eight catches for 112 yards. Defensively Michael Luthi had a game high ten tackles with a sack and an interception for ESU. Daniel Webb added nine tackles and a sack as well for the Hornets. Michael Elliott led Truman with nine tackles and a fumble recovery. The Hornets are back in action on Saturday, October 30 when they travel to Missouri Western. Kick-off from Spratt Stadium in St.Joseph, Mo. is set for 1:30 p.m. NOTES: This was the first time in 31 games ESU has lost game with a fourth quarter lead dating back to a 33-30 overtime loss at Truman in 2007. ESU starting quarterback Tyler Eckenrode did not play in the second half due to a wrist injury. Series Notes... This marks the 33rd meeting between the two schools. The Griffons hold a 21-11 advantage in the series. Western has won the last five meetings and the last two in St. Joseph. Western leads the series 10-6 in St. Joseph, Mo. Western’s longest winning streak came from 1976-1985 while Emporia’s longest winning streak was just four games from 1986-1991. Both teams largest margin of victory was 32 points. The last ESU victory came on October 18, 2004 in St. Joseph, Mo. by a score of 33-30. Western leads the all-time series in October 17-7 and are 8-3 in October in St. Joseph against the Hornets. Coach Partridge is 8-5 all time against the Hornets. Coach Partridge is 3-3 in St. Joseph and 5-2 in Emporia. Drew Newhart is 3-0 all-time against the Hornets and 1-0 in St. Joseph. The Griffons have scored 20 or more points in the last seven meetings. .
