Last time out for the Griffons:
WESTERN FALLS TO FORT HAYS IN CLOSING SECONDS 85-86 - 3/3/11
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – T.J. Johnson’s last second shot rimmed out as Missouri Western fell in a thriller to
Fort Hays State 85-86 in the first round of the MIAA Tournament.
Western led 85-84 with 9.3 seconds to go, when Adrian Thomas fouled Dominique Jones. Jones made
both free throws and Johnson’s 3-point attempt with just seconds remaining rimmed out, ending the
Griffons season.
Western entered the second half with a four point lead that the Tigers quickly shrunk to one. The
Griffons pulled ahead by four again on a three from Thomas, but Hays quickly came back. With Western
leading, 60-59, Jones drained a three to give Hays their first lead of the game. The teams traded the
lead and fought back and forth until Western regained the lead 80-79 on a bucket and free throw from
Johnson.
Two free-throws from Johnson and one from Phelps
extended the Griffon lead to 83-80 with 2:00 to go. After a
Karron McKenzie layup brought Hays within one, Lavonte
Douglas went up strong and put Western up 85-82.
Shooting 54 percent from the field and 58 percent from
behind the arc in the first half, Western led from the opening
tip.
Western got out to a quick 6-0 lead that would build into a
15-6 lead after a P’Allen Stinnett 3-pointer. Stinnett had 14
in the first half and Western took a 44-40 lead to the locker
room.
Stinnett tied an MIAA Tournament record with 14 made
free throws. He was perfect from the line and led all scorers
with 26 points. Stinnett was active on the boards, leading
Western with 8 rebounds in his final game as a Griffon.
Johnson and Thomas each added 18 points and Lavonte
Douglas had 12 points on 6-8 shooting from the field.
Western shot 53 percent from the field and 50 percent from
behind the arc.
The loss leaves head coach Tom Smith with 599 career victories and ends the Griffons season at 12-16
overall.
About Fontbonne University
The Fontbonne University are in their first season under the helm of first year head
coach Steve Schafer. The Griffins are coming off a 5-19 season and a seventh place finish
in the SLIAC with a 4-12 SLIAC record.
Coach Schafer enters his first season with a 15-man roster that includes nine returners
and six newcomers. Included in those returners is senior Saliou Dioum who earned
SLIAC Honorable Mention All-Conference honors last season. Dioum averaged 11. 3
points per game last season to lead the Griffins as well as a team-high 6.1 rebounds
per game. Coach Schafer will welcomed back juniors John Reese, Ronnie Rust and
Nolan Zoellner who all previously played a year with the Griffins but did not play last
season.
Last Time Out for Fontbonne
Coach McKinney steps down as men’s basketball coach
Coach McKinney Passed Away on April 4th, 2011 after a long time battle with cancer
Feb. 22, 2011 -After 23 years roaming the sidelines at Fontbonne University, Griffin head men’s
basketball coach Dr. Lee McKinney announced tonight we will not be returning next season.
“For the past 10 years, I’ve told players and parents that I would coach as long as my health would
allow me to,” Coach McKinney said. “After 1,425 games, my health will not allow me to coach anymore
and my health must take priority right now. I would like to announce that I will be stepping
down as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Fontbonne University.”
Coach McKinney, who was unable to attend Fontbonne’s game tonight against Webster University
because of his ongoing battle with cancer, had a prepared statement read prior to tonight’s tipoff.
This is Coach McKinney’s third battle with cancer.
“I would like to thank Dr. Lee McKinney for his many years of service as Fontbonne’s athletic director
and head men’s basketball coach,” Fontbonne University President Dr. Dennis Golden said. “I
wish him well in his retirement.”
Coach McKinney has spent the last 50 years coaching at the high school and collegiate level. He
took his first coaching job in 1959 at Qulin High School. After several successful years as a high
school basketball coach in Missouri and Illinois, Coach McKinney made the jump to the collegiate
level in 1978 when he became the head coach at Missouri Baptist University. During his tenure
at Missouri Baptist, Coach McKinney compiled a 188-126 record and was named the Show-Me
Conference Coach of the Year in 1983 and 1988.
In the fall of 1988, Fontbonne hired Coach McKinney as their athletic director and first head
men’s basketball coach. Over the next 23 years, Coach McKinney compiled a 330-281 record with
three SLIAC championships, five SLIAC Tournament championships and four appearances in the
NCAA Division III National Tournament. He holds the SLIAC and Fontbonne record for most men’s
basketball coaching victories.
“I would like to commend Coach McKinney on such a wonderful career as Fontbonne’s Head
Men’s Basketball Coach,” Fontbonne athletic director Maria Eftink said. “Coach has solidified
himself as the ‘rock’ of Fontbonne athletics. All of the success that the athletic department and
men’s basketball teams have experienced is largely due to his leadership. “
For his career, Coach McKinney has 805 career victories and 518 career collegiate wins. He was
inducted into Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1992, the Missouri Baptist University Hall of Fame
in 2003, Fontbonne University Hall of Fame 2000, St. Clair High School Hall of Fame in 1995 and
2011-2012 GRIFFON MEN’S BASKETBALL

HEAD COACH TOM SMITH
Missouri Western head men’s basketball coach Tom Smith begins his 24th season at Missouri
Western and his 37th season as a collegiate head coach in 2011-2012. On October 8, 2011 the
1989-1990 basketball team was inducted into the Missouri Western Athletics Hall of Fame.
Smith started a Griffon tradition of winning basketball games in 1989 and coached his 900th
career game two seasons ago against the University of Central Missouri, the place where his
collegiate head coaching career began. Smith has been familiar with NCAA Division I and II basketball
since joining the coaching fraternity as a young head coach at Central Missouri in 1975.
Smith’s style of coaching has put the Griffons among the top members of the MIAA and NCAA
teams. Smith’s teams have always been up-tempo, high-energy and full of talent throughout
his years at Missouri Western. Smith has coached the Griffons to 11 NCAA Division II National
Tournaments, five MIAA regular season championships and four MIAA postseason tournament
titles. Smith has also been named the MIAA’s Coach-of-the-Year twice during his tenure at
Missouri Western and three times overall (once at UCM).
Smith has brought a number of talented players to St. Joseph throughout his career, including the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player, Lamont
Turner, during the 2001-2002 season and the MIAA Postseason Tournament Most Valuable Player, Damon Bailey, during the 2002-2003
season. Smith has also coached All-America selections, Mike Cornelious (1990-91) and Darrol Wright (1994-95). Smith has coached 49
All-MIAA selections in his 23 seasons at Missouri Western, six All-Region/District picks and three NCAA All-Americas.
Smith became the third head coach in Griffon basketball history in April of 1988 and became the winningest coach in Missouri Western
history on Jan. 21, 1998, surpassing the first Missouri Western basketball coach Gary Filbert. Smith became the seventh active coach in
NCAA Division II to win 500 games on February 16, 2005, with a win over Southwest Baptist at the MWSU Fieldhouse. Smith is 429-245
at Missouri Western. Smith won his 400th game at Western on November 20, 2009 in a 89-58 victory over the Lincoln Blue Tigers in the
Hillyard Tip-Off Classic.
While at UCM, Smith served as a lecturer at the Ministry of Physical Education
and Sport in Belgium, and directed the Belgian Junior Olympic program.
Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Valparaiso,
graduating in 1967. He was the captain of the school’s basketball team and
received NCAA College Division All-America recognition.
Smith and wife, Patsy, the Associate Director of Athletics at Missouri
Western, reside in St. Joseph.
