It’s Course Selection
Time Again!
Starting February 11th and through to February 22nd, all KCI students
will be selecting their courses for next year. It is important
to choose wisely because they will be committed to these courses.
To make appropriate decisions:
Start with the Credit Counselling Summary (students will
receive this when they go to the computer lab). It shows what
compulsory courses are still missing and how many credits are still
needed to graduate.
To find out what courses are offered next year, visit the KCI
website: http://kci.wrdsb.on.ca.
To get full course descriptions of these courses, check out the
Common Course Calendar also available on KCI’s website.
Check for any prerequisites needed for possible post-secondary
choices.
Do this by visiting ...
http://www.ontariocolleges.ca - Colleges
http://www.ouac.on.ca - Universities
http://www.gooyap.ca - Apprenticeships
Confirm the grade and level of each course chosen. Check that all
prerequisites are completed (or will be completed by June).
If there are any questions or concerns, please see your Guidance
Counsellor. The Counsellor would really like to be sure everyone
has exactly what he/she needs!
We are counting on parents being involved in this process and will
be sending home a list of the courses your son/daughter has chosen
for your agreement (and signature). Again, if you have any concerns,
please call your son’s/daughter’s Guidance Counsellor.
Please remember...
What you choose is important because you will be
committed to these courses for next year!
Course selections also drive what courses we are
able to offer for 2010-2011.
Mark your calendars!
March 30th and 31st
On March 30th and 31st,
students will write a practice
test with elements that
resemble the actual Literacy
Test. This will prepare
students for the format and
expectations of the test.
The practice test and
corresponding answers can be
found on the EQAO website at
www.eqao.com.
We encourage parents to
support their son/daughter’s
success by visiting the site for
further information.
Steeped in history and tradition
Okay, so if you had asked me
3 years ago if I would be one
of those students who goes to
the library and signs out a
book I would have said “no
way!” The same would hold
true for MSIP. When I was in
grade 10 and 11, I probably
spent as much time at Tim
Horton’s during MSIP as I did
in my MSIP class. But then
something happened that
turned it all around…
Our MSIP class (a class I just
happened to be at that day)
visited the library and Ms.
Danic, in her cool, not in-yourface
way, encouraged/helped
me find a book I might be interested
in. She said, “try it, it
won’t hurt you.”
And so I did. I started off
slowly at first, embarrassed
that I actually sat in class with
a book open. I mean what
would my friends think?
They’d probably think I was a
geek or something. But no
one said anything and no one
looked at me in a way that
suggested they were identifying
me as a geek and so I kept
reading…
And little by little I was
hooked. I was actually reading.
It reminded me of when I
was five and I was able to balance
on a two wheeler. I was
the coolest 5 year old in my
complex. Straight up, it felt
the same way!!!
And then came the next step…
going to the library and getting
another book. Ms. Danic was
there and she asked me what I
thought of the first book. She
actually wanted my opinion,
and I actually had an opinion.
The story of a
non-reader turned
reading addict!
By: An Anonymous male
student...
She said she would use that
feedback to tell other kids
about the book. Then she
pointed me to the next book
in the series, book 2 of like
13.
I left with two books and
I’m proud to say I’ve read 6
books in the series this semester.
I even read at home.
My Dad who never reads,
thinks I’m “sick in the
head”, but I know what he is
really saying is that he’s
proud that I’m reading.
I go to MSIP now so that I
can read. I carry my books
around with me in my backpack
and sometimes I even
take one out on the bus and
read.
I feel like I have more words
in my head to use when I’m
writing something or talking
about something. I think for
the first time in my life I feel
like maybe I can be a good
student.
I’m still a little embarrassed
to talk about books with my
friends but I took my buddy
to the library a few weeks
ago and I had Ms. Danic
hook him up with a book.
He finished reading it and is
on his second. I’m trying to
get him to read the stuff I
like and he’s trying to convince
me that I should read
his stuff. I think we’re addicted
- addicted to reading!
Thanks Ms. Danic - you
book pusher, you!
KCI Library
Thanks to the Urban Priority
High School Initiative, we
were able to purchase $10,000
worth of new books. The
money was spent equally between
fiction and non fiction.
3500 new books have been
added to the KCI Library.
KCI Reads is a staggering
success with 3000 books circulated
each month.
Graphic novels are very popular.
Crescent Moon, Tsubasa,
and Full Metal Alchemist are
the most popular series.
The books in Stephanie
Meyer’s Twilight series went
out over 50 times each.
Books by Lauren Myracle,
Jodi Picoult, Tom Patterson
Tom Clancy and Scott
Westerfeld were also very
popular.
KCI is very thankful to everyone
who has donated almost
new books that are of interest
to high school students.
We need, they need, parental support!
WHAT HAPPENS IF STUDENTS DON’T ATTEND THEIR MSIP CLASS?
Because MSIP is designed to assist students in completing homework and assignments, students who
choose not to attend are putting their academic success at risk. MSIP is like any other class and students
who do not attend will be assigned detentions and, in some cases, be denied access to cocurricular
and extra-curricular programs. MSIP is also part of a student’s designated instructional
time, and where significant absences occur, students could be jeopardizing their credit. SO….go to
Dual Credit with the
University of Waterloo!
By: Mr. Sage
The grade 12 Earth and Space Science
course, SES 4UI, is the starting point
for a new and exciting opportunity!
Students who plan to attend the University
of Waterloo can earn a university
credit for work completed in high
school. The Waterloo Region District
School Board and University of Waterloo
team have created a high school
credit equivalent to a first year university
Earth Science course.
Students who complete SES 4UI at KCI
and who earn 70% or higher in the
course and an online exam are eligible
for a certificate from the Waterloo Region
District School Board. The Registrar
at the University of Waterloo will
grant a first year university credit to
students who meet the criteria. It’s a
win/win for students; earn a great mark
at the first year level (70% + on the
course work and 70% + on the final
exam) AND save about $590 in first
year tuition!
OSSIA 13!
On December 15th, 2009
KCI students, parents, staff
and community members
enjoyed the musical talents
of KCI’s many musical groups. This
year’s OSSIA theme was Turn the World
Many thanks to all the students, staff and
volunteers who helped to make this evening
possible.
KCI School Council
By: Marg Johnston, School
Council Chair
Dear KCI Parents,
Ever feel like there is more to learn
about KCI than what you're hearing?
Ever wanted to get more involved
at KCI, but didn't know how? KCI
School Council is an excellent way to
become informed.
We meet monthly (except March) on
the last Monday evening of the month
at 7:00 p.m. in the KCI Library. A
typical meeting consists of a report
from Student Council - outlining upcoming
student activities and events, a
Principal's report where we learn of
school activities - focusing on learning
initiatives and plans, and a report from
WRAPSC - the Waterloo Region Association
of Public School Councils
which focuses on issues common to
School Councils across the Region.
The School Administration is very interested
in hearing a parental perspective
on KCI life and very much value
your input. You don't need to be a
"member" to attend and there are very
few, if any, expectations outside of the
meetings. You can start attending at
any time - no need to wait until September.
I would be happy to answer any questions
you may have. You can email me
at margaret.anne.johnston@rogers.com
Hope to see you soon.
KCI Cosmetology Students
offer Hair Services!
By: Shelleza Arfeen
The KCI Hair Studio is a comfortable
place for conversation and hair services
with trained Cosmetology students who
specialize in all aspects of hairstyling
including haircuts, colour, and styling.
The majority of our customers are KCI
students. On Tuesday, however, KCI
partners with St. Mark’s Church, to aid
members of the parish in getting a stylish
new look.
I have been working at KCI’s Salon for
four years and have participated in many
St. Mark’s Days. The opportunity to
work with members of the community
has allowed me to gain valuable knowledge,
learn responsibility and further
develop skills towards my career goals.
KCI CO-OP– IT WORKS!
By: Mrs. Hartmann
KCI Co-op Job Fair and Employer
Breakfast Appreciation Event
On January 6, 2010, KCI’s co-op students
showcased their co-op work placements during
their last four months.
Administration, staff and students applauded,
celebrated and thanked all employers for
their commitment to KCI’s co-operative Education
program, for working, mentoring and
facilitating students to gain “ hands on experience,”
while earning high school credits
towards their diplomas.
Local Employers included Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Waterloo, Victoria
Star Motors, Mitchell Animal Hospital, CHYM-FM, Elmira Farm Service, St
Mary’s and Grand River Hospitals, Vincenzo’s, Rebel Creek Golf Course, and
Home Hardware, to name just a few.
Cooperative Education is not only a valuable program offering students the opportunity
to gain work experience, and to “test drive their future careers,” but it can also
be a prerequisite for the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, Dual Credits and
Specialist High Skills Major Programs. Test drive a career path!
KCI OUTREACH
CLUB
By: Mr. Bulmer
Awareness, justice and integrity;
what do those three words
mean to you? To the Outreach
Club at KCI, these three words
present an opportunity to make
a difference. OUTREACH has
been established at KCI within
the Geography Department as
a club, focused on giving students
an opportunity to serve
within their school, community
and internationally. We have been working together since 2005, participating in
school building expeditions to Honduras.
This year, our group is planning an aid trip to Chile. Upon our arrival, we will be
working with inner city youth in areas of the capital of Santiago. We will be working
on various construction projects like creating a nursery for pregnant and teenage
mothers as well as painting and redecorating the youth shelter.
In our community we hope to raise awareness about cultural acceptance and diversity.
We want to empower others and provoke change, compassion and empathy. The students
will become the leaders of tomorrow and we’re trying to demonstrate through
our actions that most people in the world don’t generally lead the comfortable lives
we enjoy here.
AFTER HOURS 2: The
Return
By: Jason Panda
In November of 2008, the KCI Art Department
invited students, staff and
friends to take part in a new community
show that would fill the halls with musicians,
artists and artisans. This year
on November 25 th , with even more artists,
three floors of buskers and expanding
to new areas of the school, After
Hours was back!
With less than three hours to get ready,
the KCI Arts Council transformed the
main foyers, hallways and cafeteria and
by 5:00 p.m. artists started to arrive.
Students, local businesses and professional
artists all contributed to an incredible
showcase that over 500 visitors
had the opportunity to peruse.
Thank you once again to the unbelievable
dedication of the students who
made the night possible and thank you
to the staff and community members
who supported, presented, performed or
walked through our halls celebrating
the joy of creation, cookies and art.
KCI Student Activities
By: Andrea Mickie
K.C.I. has had much to celebrate in the
past couple of months in terms of activity,
enthusiasm, energy, and generosity.
First, a big congratulations to grade nine
student Nicola Loghrin who was
crowned our first K.C.I. Idol by audience
vote; as well, special mention to second
place finisher, Nate Hall for his wonderful
performance.
In addition, a very courageous Ms.
Dopko participated in a fantastic fundraiser
when she shaved her head after
students helped to raise over $1200 for
KidsAbility, an organization aimed to
help children and young adults with developmental,
physical and communication
disabilities.
Finally, the outstanding generosity of
K.C.I. seemed limitless as they contributed
to raise funds for Earthquake Relief
in Haiti; altogether, staff and students
raised over $2800 which will be matched
by government aid. Students and staff
also collected well over 200 pairs of
shoes! Thank you, K.C.I., for your kindness
and compassion in both times of
need and times of celebration.
Immunization Records
Update!
The Region of Waterloo Public
Health is required to collect and analyze
immunization records of all children
attending school in Waterloo
Region. We do this to ensure the immunization
status of all children in
the event of a vaccine preventable
disease outbreak.
The Immunization of School Pupils
Act requires students to be immunized
against tetanus, diphtheria,
polio, measles, mumps and rubella.
These records of immunization must
be provided to Public Health. With
appropriate legal documentation,
exemptions based on medical or conscience
reasons are allowed. If students
do not provide the immunization
record or legal exemption to
Public Health, they may face suspension
from school for up to 20 days or
until the documentation is completed
and received.
