<strong>century</strong> may need to exhibit a skill set that<br />

differs from that of a previous generation.<br />

What, <strong>the</strong>n, must <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g generation<br />

of <strong>aircraft</strong> <strong>commander</strong>s possess <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

personal tool kits, and what are <strong>the</strong> challenges<br />

<strong>the</strong>y face? How should <strong>the</strong>y be selected<br />

and prepared for <strong>the</strong> responsibilities <strong>the</strong>y<br />

will be expected to undertake? And how will<br />

<strong>the</strong>y rema<strong>in</strong> motivated to feel that <strong>the</strong>y, as<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals, can make a difference and develop<br />

as <strong>the</strong> years roll by if <strong>the</strong>y are not to consider<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves little more than aviat<strong>in</strong>g computer<br />

programmers?<br />

This Conference highlights some of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

questions, for failure to develop viable solutions<br />

can put at risk <strong>the</strong> long sought-for need to have<br />

<strong>in</strong> command of commercial air transport <strong>aircraft</strong><br />

persons who are both professionally competent<br />

and motivated cont<strong>in</strong>ually to deliver safe and<br />
