Cantata At Community UMC Sunday 

The Community United Methodist Church invites the community and 

surrounding area people to the Christmas Cantata Sunday morning, December 

9, at 9:00. Members of the choir are from Community UMC, Shell Rock 

UMC and Trinity UMC of Waverly. 

The choir will again present the beautiful music for Christmas at the Trinity 

UMC in Waverly at 10:30. 

“ROOM IN THE INN” nativity sets grace many places in the sanctuary. 

Each Nativity set reflects the shining star that shone over Bethlehem. Members 

of the church family are sharing the peaceful and joyful sets. 

Plainfield to hold Christmas on Main Sunday 

Plainfield will be holding their first Christmas on Main Sunday, December 

9 th 5-7pm The Tree Lighting will be held by the City of Plainfield sign at 5 

p.m. Santa Claus will be at the library. 

There will be several open houses, a supper at the Baptist Church, Bluegrass 

music and a coloring contest at the Methodist Church.

Clarksville After Prom fundraiser set for Dec. 14 

The Clarksville After Prom committee will be holding a fundraiser on Friday, 

December 14 from 4-8 p.m. They will be serving walking tacos and 

homemade bars for a freewill donation in the east gym lobby. 

The Clarksville Indians will be hosting GMG for the basketball games. 

Come out and support the after prom and the Indians! 

Dumont Old Fashioned Christmas 

Open Houses set for Friday-Saturday 

Several Dumont area businesses will be holding their annual open houses 

on Friday, December 7, and Saturday, December 8. 

The library will host their open house on Friday, 9-noon, and 1-4pm Saturday, 

Santa pictures 9:30 to 11; ornament craft for children. Friends of the 

Library, Friday, 9am -2 pm, Book Sale, Brown Center lower level 

The Dumont Fire Department will hold a Soup and Chili Supper served 

with beefburgers from 11a.m.-2 p.m.

Linda Betsinger McCann will be signing

Cedar Valley Road and Lost Bremer 

County, at the Mason City Book World 

on Saturday, December 8, from 11:30 to 

2 pm. She will have copies of her "Lost" 

series available for purchase and her signature 

also. 

The Cedar Valley Road is a history of 

the Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Northern 

Railway, an electric train that ran between 

Waverly and Cedar Rapids in the 

first half of the 1900s. Linda interviewed 

over sixty people and shares their memories 

and personal experiences with the 

interurban. There are many pictures and 

maps in the book.

County that are virtually forgotten by

with Cedar Valley history. She is researching 

prohibition in the Cedar Valley

Volunteers needed for Certified 

Respite Provider program 

WAVERLY, Iowa — A program 

that has been a boon to Northeast 

Iowa foster parents needing some 

time off is seeking volunteers to become 

certified respite providers. 

Established by the Wartburg College 

social work department and the 

Allison Area Foster Parent Association, 

the Certified Respite Provider 

program enables foster parents to get 

away for a weekend or a vacation. 

Previously, they had to leave their 

children in another foster home, but 

now they can request a certified respite 

provider to come to their home. 

Nancy Magnall, resource information 

specialist with the Iowa Foster 

and Adoptive Parents Association, 

said providers must be at least 20 

years old, complete an application 

and certification process, and be able 

to make a one-year commitment to 

the program. 

“We will need a wider circle of 

providers, and we’re hoping to attract 

even more college students and 

other interested adults,” Magnall 

said. 

Training will be offered in Waverly, 

beginning in January, and 

in Decorah, beginning in February, 

to serve families in Allamakee, 

Bremer, Butler, Clayton, Chickasaw, 

Fayette, Franklin, Grundy, Howard, 

and Winneshiek counties. 

The program, which originally 

served four counties, has trained 

35 volunteers, including college 

students, former foster parents and 

adult children of foster families in 

its first two years. 

Its success resulted in a $25,000 

contact with the Iowa Department of 

Human Services that will expand the 

program to 10 counties and involve 

the Luther College social work department 

as well.

Miner to discuss realignment of Park Technician 

staff. Also present were Conservation Board

board considered a request for a $1,700 

increase in yearly pay and a promotion to Senior

Take advantage of these lingering 

mild days to do any final garden 

cleanup. 

• As long as there isn’t snow or ice 

on the ground, you can continue to 

do some garden chores. It’s never 

to late to rake leaves and now is 

a perfectly fine time to do any 

necessary pruning. 

• Cut evergreens from your 

yard. They make beautiful holiday 

decorations. Just remember that 

each cut is a pruning cut, so do so 

with care. Make garlands, strew 

on a mantle top, or even tuck into 

a vase with some pretty holiday 

flourishes. Or tuck them into pots, 

windowboxes, and planters for a 

festive bit of greenery for a few 

months until spring. 

• If you haven’t already, mound 

all but the most hardy roses (such 

as rugosas.) Simply toss a few 

spadefuls of loose soil or compost 

in and around the base of the rose to 

make a mound 8-12 inches high. Pat 

gently. This protects the vulnerable 

graft of the rose at its base from 

winter extremes. 

• Did you remove your hoses from 

the outdoor faucet and bring them 

indoors? Otherwise, they may trap 

water and damage pipes. 

• Keep poinsettias evenly but 

not overly watered. They dry out 

easily, but will yellow if kept soggy. 

Position them in a bright spot away 

from cold drafts and blasts of heat 

from a vent or fireplace. 

• If you clean a wood burning stove 

or fireplace, dump the ashes on your

What’s in store after Dumont, Aredale 

host post office hour reduction meetings?

In back-to-back post plan 

meetings on Nov. 28, in Aredale at 

5 p.m. and Dumont at 7 p.m., the 

U.S. Postal Service announced a 

reduction of staffing hours at each. 

The Aredale Post Office staffing 

each weekday would reduce from 

eight to two hours, and Dumont Post 

Office staffing weekdays would go 

from eight to six hours. 

Changes would likely take effect 

late April to early May, manager of 

post office operations Thomas Allen 

told attendees. 

Showing interest 

Twelve of Aredale’s 

approximately 74 residents attended 

the meeting. 

Of 64 customer surveys mailed 

to Aredale residents, 40 were 

returned. Exactly 80 percent favored 

a realignment of hours; 15 percent 

favored a rural delivery option; 

3 percent (one person) favored a 

village post office; the other person 

selected nothing. 

Eighteen people attended 

Dumont’s meeting, out of 

approximately 637. 

Of 613 customer surveys 

mailed to Dumont residents, 225 

were returned. Some 89 percent 

favored a realignment of hours; 3 

percent favored a delivery option, 

one percent (two people) favored 

a village post office, and 7 percent 

selected nothing. 

Realignment of hours 

Every year, based on each 

post office’s walk-in revenue and 

survey responses, which favored a 

realignment of hours in both towns, 

its staffing hours change accordingly. 

Specific hours were suggested, 

though changes can be made before 

the spring if deemed beneficial. 

Suggested hours for Aredale 

are weekdays 2 to 4 p.m. (it now 

opens at 7:45 a.m., same closing) 

and Saturday, 8 to 9:30 a.m., (no 

change). 

Aredale postmaster relief staffer 

is Jeanette Miller, of rural Aredale. 

Suggested hours for Dumont 

were weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2:30 

p.m. with a 12 to 12:30 p.m. lunch. 

Current Dumont hours are 9:15 a.m. 

to 4 p.m. with a 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. 

lunch.

could be available 24 hours a day, 

if the post offices are treated with 

respect.

The Dumont Post Office 

experienced vandalism to its lobby 

and the blue mailbox outside, 

according to a warning notice posted 

in the lobby. These vandalism acts 

are a federal offense, per the Dumont 

notice—or can be, depending how 

much damage is done, Allen said at 

the Aredale meeting. 

Allen said the Dumont mayor had 

instituted a curfew.

asked Allen how to prevent possible 

vandalism to their post office lobby, 

were it to be left open 24 hours. 

Allen said in addition to posting 

a warning to deter vandalism, the 

community should band together 

to start an awareness project about 

respecting the property.

Mail volume is not what it used 

to be, Thomas Allen said in Dumont. 

First class letter volume is all but 

gone. This year’s presidential race, 

with Iowa being a hotly contested 

state, boosted letter volume, thus 

postal service revenue, according to 

Thomas Allen. 

Lowell Allen, attending the 

Aredale meeting and who is affiliated 

with the Aredale Fire Association, 

said he was mailing letters that same 

morning when someone brought in 

a thick stack of letters from out of 

town. “We still have people who 

are very faithful at writing letters, 

and appreciate those people,” 

Thomas Allen told Dumont meeting 

attendees. 

Vote with your money 

Every year based on each post 

office’s revenue, its operating hours 

will either go up or down. 

Customers wanting to maintain 

or expand hours of operation at 

their local post office (LPO) were 

encouraged to vote with their 

purchases by buying stamps and 

mailing packages from the LPO. 

Internet postage purchased from 

USPS.com might be credited to your 

local post office. When you mail a 

package with a label printed from 

the Internet, your return address 

links where credit for the postage 

goes. 

That can be overridden when 

using click and ship postage. A box 

below the form, if clicked, can send 

credit for the purchase to another 

post office, “which you don’t want 

to do,” Allen said in Dumont. 

Refrain for USPS 

U.S. Postal Service financial 

difficulties have been in the news a 

while. 

Allen said a financial report the 

previous week showed USPS $15.9 

billion in the red. 

“Not too many businesses can 

stay in business and lose almost 16 

billion dollars a year,” he said. 

Congress passed a law six years 

ago that the USPS must prefund 

retirees’ benefits at $5 billion a 

year. He said the law came out 

after CEOs such as Enron’s swiped 

workers’ pensions. USPS is the only 

company, business or service in the 

country required by law to take this 

measure, Allen indicated. 

The USPS has defaulted twice on 

its payments. He said the postmaster 

general made clear USPS would 

not pay the bill, so to speak, before 

paying all its employees and

He said now USPS is asking the 

federal government to change that 

law and give USPS back $10 billion. 

“How do you think that’s going to 

work?” he asked rhetorically. 

The U.S. Senate passed the 

requested bill, but in the U.S. House 

of Representatives, a bill on the topic 

never left the committee stage. 

USPS is also asking to go 

from six-day delivery to five-day, 

eliminating Saturday. This also takes 

an act of congress, Allen said. 

In 1972, a post office strike led 

to creation of laws that now govern 

USPS. This included the six-day 

delivery mandate. 

Feedback 

In Aredale, attendees talked about 

losing six hours of staffing at the 

post office per day. 

At a meeting last year with the 

U.S. Postal Service in Aredale, 

in which closing the post office 

was suggested, some attendees 

reportedly stormed out. 

Lowell Allen, a member of the 

Aredale Fire Association, said, “This 

is a lot better than losing it.” He 

continued, “If we’re going to have a 

small town, we can’t let things like 

this go unnoticed (…) because one 

of these days, it’s going to be gone.” 

When Allen asked, Dumont 

meeting attendees seemed unfazed 

about the less marked hour shift.

The Aredale and Dumont post 

offices are 7.6 miles apart.

been working hard for this award,” 

said Madison. Her favorite subject 

is reading because she thinks it’s fun 

to read. Madison’s favorite things 

about North Butler Middle School 

are the teachers who reward them. 

She is involved in volleyball, basketball, 

and softball. She likes watching 

TV in her free time. Madison’s family 

is her biggest influence because 

they help her with her homework.

Wrestling Team is getting ready for 

their first wrestling meet on Thursday, 

November 29. 

Noah Heathcott said he is pumped 

for wrestling this season because 

he loves wrestling. He thinks he is 

ready for this meet, but the first meet 

is always the hardest. Noah thinks 

the hardest thing in practice is the 

full-go. A full-go is when you fight 

with rules. His favorite move is the 

duck under heel lay back combo 

move. Noah says, “Coach Nelson is 

hard on us, but that is his job, and 

I like the challenge!” He also said, 

“Yes we have a good team because 

we are a well put together team.” 

Dalton Nelson says he is excited 

for this season because it’s going to 

be fun. Dalton thinks he is ready for 

his name over the intercom. Nick 

thinks he was chosen for student 

of the week because he gets good 

grades. His parents were happy he 

received student of the week. Nick 

plans on hanging up the certificate. 

He has been working hard for this 

award. “P.E. is my favorite subject 

because it’s fun,” said Nick. Nick’s 

favorite thing about North Butler 

Middle School are the iPads. Nick 

is in football, basketball, baseball. “I 

like to shoot guns in my free time,” 

said Nick. His parents are his biggest 

influence because they help him. 

Nick’s role model is Brandon, his 

brother, because he’s tall. 

Gabby was shocked when she 

found out she was chosen for student 

of the week. Gabby thinks she 

was chosen for student of the week 

because she always gets her homework 

done. Her parents were happy 

she received the award. Gabby plans 

on hanging up her certificate. Gabby 

doesn’t think she has been working 

toward this award. Gabby doesn’t 

have a favorite subject because she

says that she is excited for her first 

game because she has a feeling that 

they are going to win! She plays at

because it is his first year in junior 

high wrestling. Brandon said, “I

Every four years, Americans get a 

chance to see peaceful democracy at 

work. We Americans are very lucky 

that as we celebrate the inauguration 

of a president peacefully and 

with celebration, we are able to continue 

the good nature of our political 

process. Most inaugurations are 

celebrated on January 20th, however 

2013 will be the 7th time in our nation’s 

history that the inauguration 

will take place on January 21st because 

the 20th falls on a Sunday. 

This year, my office is happy to 

announce that we are offering tickets 

to the public for President Obama’s 

Second Inauguration on January 

21st, 2013. 

Due to a limited number of tickets 

available, we are holding a free 

online lottery to determine the distribution 

of tickets. Because of the 

lottery, we cannot guarantee that all 

who apply will get tickets. 

To request tickets for the online 

lottery, constituents should enter

are limited to four tickets

Clint Poock, about starting up this 

new column, he thought it sounded 

like a good idea to give a chance. 

My general idea was to start a 2 

Cents Worth column in the newspaper 

where anybody can e-mail us 

their opinions. The reason? Well my 

interest stems from a class I took in 

high school, journalism 101. The 

teacher really made learning fun 

for me, and I think the whole class. 

He thought outside the box, and we 

didn’t even follow a textbook. Every 

day I would look forward to the afternoon 

class, wondering what interesting 

activity was planned for the 

day.

Side of the Moon. Later, the journalism 

teacher brought in four speakers 

and spread them around the room. 

We, the students, then sat in the middle 

of the room and he played a song 

by the Flaming Lips that would start 

at one speaker, go to the next and the 

next, etc., changing the listening experience. 

Later, he gave us a colorblind 

test, as we found out he was 

color blind. He showed us how he 

saw certain colors like red and blue 

in black and white, but others colors 

like green the same way we do. 

Of course another day in the 

class, we tried to all come up with 

our 2 cents worth. Our teacher had 

brought in the Des Moines Register, 

and to my surprise, showed us the 

2 Cents Worth column. Though my 

parents subscribed to the Register, I 

had no idea what it was. However, 

he explained to us that the Register 

column was just people calling in 

and giving their opinions on a certain 

subject for the paper to publish. 

Eventually we were challenged 

to think of our 2 cents worth, and I 

found it more challenging I thought 

it would be. I thought and thought, 

and eventually I came up with some-

without writing a letter to the editor, 

and without even leaving your name. 

You could put whereabouts your located, 

your nickname, a greeting, 

a word that describes what your 2 

cents is, etc., to end it.

Derdzinski and Brace perform 

at Christmas at Luther 

Anna Derdzinski (NBHS 2010; 

Luther College 2014) and McKenzie 

Brace (NBHS 2012; Luther College 

2016) were part of Christmas at Luther 

2012: Tidings of Comfort and 

Joy. This Annual Tradition is in its 

32nd year and features six choirs, 

the Symphony Orchestra, organ, 

Luther Ringers, narration, the opportunity 

for audience participation, 

and Luther’s signature lighting of 

candles. There were 5 sell out performances 

from November 29th to 

December 2nd. Anna and McKenzie 

are both in Cantorei Choir, which includes 

women from all classes and is 

under the direction of Linda Martin. 

North Central Veterinary Clinic hosted a Christmas open house Saturday morning. Both Linda Elliot and 

Dr. Chelsea Peelen are pictured at the clinic, with Elliot trying out a few items from the spread in the front 

that included meatballs, crackers and cheese, apple cider, coffee and more. 

Braley offers

Registration for online-only lottery 

ends on Dec. 14 

Washington, D. C. – Rep. Bruce 

Braley (IA-01) announced that his 

office is offering tickets to the public 

for President Obama’s second inauguration 

on Jan. 21. 

Due to the limited number of available 

tickets, tickets cannot be guaranteed 

for all that apply. Therefore, 

Braley’s office will hold an online 

lottery to determine distribution. 

To request tickets, constituents 

must enter the lottery at the following 

Web site: http://braley.house. 

gov/inauguration-tickets. Applicants 

are limited to four tickets per 

request, and the deadline to apply is 

Dec. 14. 

The lottery is open to the public, 

but preference will be given to 

residents of the First Congressional 

District. There is no fee or charge to 

enter the lottery or for tickets. 

Each party who receives tickets 

from Braley’s office will be responsible 

for making their own travel 

arrangements. Winners will be notified 

in late December, and will be 

given information on how to pick up 

their tickets at that time. 

There will be a number of inauguration-related 

events that do not require 

tickets. For more information

The other choirs are Aurora (firstyear 

women), Norsemen (first-year 

men), Cathedral Choir (sophomore 

mixed), Collegiate Chorale (junior/

year, a small children’s choir with 

7 members from the local schools. 

The concert is always recorded and 

streamed live on Luther Radio. This 

year it was also video recorded for 

PBS and will be broadcast all over 

the country (check local listings) 

and will be available on DVD. Iowa 

Public TV will broadcast the concert 

on Sunday, December 23, 2012 at 

7:00 p.m.

Butler County Farm Bureau AITC Coordinator Ruth Seehusen visited the Allison and Greene Elementary classrooms during the month of 

November and talked to them about turkeys. Ruth showed the classes the DVD “Turkey Production in Iowa” from the Iowa Turkey Federation 

in Ames. The DVD kept the interest of everyone by showing the baby poults, hens and toms, and when they hatch. 

Afterward the students worked on the “Turkey Tracks” worksheets that Ruth had for them. They counted 

turkeys, learned how many days it takes to hatch a turkey egg, practiced writing the word turkey, and lastly 

talked about food items that can be made from turkey. 

Mrs. Hagen’s second graders at the Allison Elementary are pictured above working on their “Turkey 

Tracks” pages that tell turkey facts and about turkey production.
