<strong>The</strong> papers were donated to the University of Missouri by V. James Rhodes on 10<br />
March <strong>1966</strong> (Accession No. 3655).<br />
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH<br />
Oliver Ray <strong>Johnson</strong>, son of Oliver Henry and Sarah Matilda Minor <strong>Johnson</strong>, was<br />
born November 15, <strong>1887</strong>, in Rice County, Kansas. <strong>The</strong> family moved to Holt County,<br />
Missouri, where <strong>Johnson</strong> spent his youth. He attended the University of Missouri,<br />
receiving his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in <strong>1910</strong> and his Master of Arts in 1912;<br />
in 1925-1926, he did graduate work at Cornell under G.F. Warren.<br />
<strong>Johnson</strong> joined the University of Missouri faculty in <strong>1910</strong>; in 1914, he became<br />
chairman of the Department of Farm Management (named changed to Department of<br />
Rural Life in 1920). In 1926, he became a professor of agricultural economics. He did<br />
the first farm management studies ever made in Missouri in 1912-1913. He was the<br />
author and co-author of numerous agricultural bulletins, usually dealing with farm<br />
management and farm tenancy.<br />
In 1911, <strong>Johnson</strong> married Ruth Phillips of Kansas City, Missouri. He enlisted in<br />
the U.S. Army in August 1917, and received an honorable discharge in May 1919, after<br />
which re resumed his position at the University of Missouri. He retired from the<br />
University of Missouri faculty in 1958, at which time he received the title professor<br />
emeritus.<br />
<strong>Johnson</strong> was a member of Sigma Xi, American Economic Association, American<br />
Farm Economic Association, American Academy of Political and Social Science,<br />
Gamma Sigma Delta, and Alpha Zeta Phi. He was involved in both civic and municipal<br />
organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America of the Central Missouri area, the First<br />
Presbyterian Church Sunday School, the Columbia City Council, and the Columbia<br />
Board of Adjustment.<br />
