Notes for WILLIAMINA GALLAGHER:
Williamina, nicknamed "Mina," was baptized in St. Lawrence RC Church, Greenock, Scotland, on 31 July 1910.
Her paternal grandparents were from Glenties, Co. Donegal, and her maternal grandfather, John Keenan, was
from Bangor, Co. Down. Her maternal grandmother, Annie Burns, was born in Co. Armagh, Ireland, but the
exact location has not yet been found.
She lived in Moffat Street and Hill Street in Greenock, and attended St. Lawrence School.
Mina arrived in lower Manhattan on board the "Cameronia" on May 7, 1929, with her sister Annie and friends
Mary Rooney and Margaret Reed Gillespie. She had to wait on the ship all day until a priest "claimed" her and
Annie. Her mother, Sarah Jane Keenan Gallagher, thought all the Scots met every ship that came in and did not
tell Mary, who had emigrated a year earlier, what day they would arrive. The helpful priest called Mary, who
recruited a boyfriend with a car to pick them up. Mina wanted to stay on the ship and go back to Scotland. She
said she needed a "good cup of tea."
Mina was 5 ft, 3 inches tall and weighed 115 pounds. She had black hair.
She became a citizen of the U.S. on 18 December 1939.
Her pregnancy with her son Thomas (born 25 February 1944) was a surprise because a doctor had told her she
could not have children.
She worked as a domestic, cleaned airplanes for American Airlines at LaGuardia Airport, and worked in a school
cafeteria. For many years she worked at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in NYC as a payroll clerk,
retiring in 1975 at the age of 65.
After her death from cancer of the liver, Mina was buried 24 February 1978 in Gate of Heaven Cemetery,
Hawthorne, NY, Section 38, Plot 408, Grave 7, under the name "Mina Maloney Layburn". In the same plot are
her sister, Mary Shearer Reed, and Mary's first husband, William Shearer. (Mina married Harold Layburn in
1975)
