opposition melted away, <strong>and</strong> resistance along the entire Neckar River<br />

collapsed, permitting the drive to continue into southern Germany<br />

unchecked.<br />

3. Sketches, showing disposition of troops cited supporting troops,<br />

enemy positions, <strong>and</strong> general terrain features are attached as Inclosure 3.<br />

4. a. Nature of terrain: <strong>The</strong> terrain, rolling <strong>and</strong> open, was ideally<br />

suited for defense. It afforded the enemy excellent observation <strong>and</strong><br />

fields of fire.<br />

b. Enemy morale: Excellent.<br />

c. Morale of our troops: Excellent.<br />

d. Weather: Clear <strong>and</strong> warm.<br />

e. Exact time <strong>and</strong> dates of action: <strong>The</strong> 1st Battalion was committed<br />

on 7 April 1945, continued the attack until 11 April 1945.<br />

5. a. Number of men assigned to 1st Battalion who took part in<br />

action: 46 officers, 854 enlisted men.<br />

b. Casualties suffered by 1st Battalion were:<br />

KIA-1 officer <strong>and</strong> 25 enlisted men.<br />

MIA-1 officer <strong>and</strong> 4 enlisted men.<br />

WIA-32 enlisted men.<br />

c. Approximate strength of supporting troops, <strong>and</strong> character of support<br />

rendered by other units was:<br />

(1) 375th Field Artillery Battalion<br />

(2) 1 Platoon, Company B, 325th Engineer Battalion<br />

(3) 1 Platoon, 781st Tank Battalion<br />

(4) 1 Platoon, '824th Tank Destroyer Battalion<br />

6. a. Approximate strength of enemy: Two battalions of the 38th<br />

SS Panzer Grenadier Division, 2d Company of the Battle Group Nord<br />

<strong>and</strong> 17th Panzer Grenadier Division (one assault company). This included<br />

the approximate total of eleven hundred soldiers.<br />

b. Character of enemy fire <strong>and</strong> observation: <strong>The</strong> enemy's fire consisted<br />

of 88mm artillery, 210mm Nebelwerfer, 50mm mortars, automatic-weapons<br />

<strong>and</strong> small-arms fire. <strong>The</strong> enemy had complete observation<br />

of the sector the 1St Battalion was to attack.<br />

c. Apparent enemy intention or objective: To hold the ground on<br />

this side of the Kocher River at all cost.<br />

d. Losses suffered by enemy: All causes, approximately 600.<br />
