Dear Friends:<br />
For over 100 years, Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services has been helping children and families improve their<br />
lives and fulfill their dreams. While we have faced numerous challenges and overcome many obstacles through the years, our<br />
commitment to providing the very best in programs and services to the children and families we serve has never wavered.<br />
In our search for excellence in service delivery, we are proud to have once again been awarded the Gold Seal <strong>of</strong> Approval from<br />
the Joint Commission. The Gold Seal marks the highest level <strong>of</strong> certification an organization can receive and measures how<br />
they administer care and continuously improve performance This past year has also presented significant economic challenges<br />
throughout our entire industry and required our team at Hathaway-Sycamores to make not only strategic, but sometimes very<br />
difficult, programmatic decisions. But through the guidance and supp<strong>ort</strong> <strong>of</strong> our board <strong>of</strong> directors, a dedicated staff <strong>of</strong> over 600<br />
employees and a donor community who strongly believes in our mission, we continue today as the largest provider <strong>of</strong> children’s<br />
mental health services in <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> <strong>County</strong>, helping over 11,000 children and families.<br />
While we have accomplished a great deal and have much to be proud <strong>of</strong> over the past year, our mission is now more critical than<br />
ever before. In turbulent economic times such as these, where individuals lose their jobs and financial resources become stressed,<br />
the need for our services will increase significantly. Our goal is now the same as it has been for the past 100 years, to always be<br />
there for those who need our help.<br />

daughter did not understand what<br />
was going on with my son and they<br />
would fight a lot. The program was a<br />
family program and helped all <strong>of</strong> us to<br />
better understand what he was going<br />
through and how we could help.”<br />
“He has changed, he thinks about the<br />
consequences <strong>of</strong> his actions, whether<br />
they be positive or negative.”<br />
Jennifer: Prior to coming to Hathaway-Sycamores Family<br />
Resource Center in 2004, 14 year-old Jennifer witnessed the domestic abuse<br />
that occurred between her mother and her mother’s boyfriend. Because <strong>of</strong><br />
these experiences, Jennifer had severe behavioral problems at home and at<br />
school. Due to her lack <strong>of</strong> trust in people she rarely spoke. Initially, when she<br />
needed to respond to Hathaway-Sycamores staff, her r<strong>ep</strong>lies were limited to<br />
“yes” or “no” answers. With the help <strong>of</strong> her case manager, both Jennifer and<br />
her mom decided they needed individual and mother/daughter counseling<br />
in addition to activities that <strong>of</strong>fered Jennifer both adult and peer supp<strong>ort</strong>.<br />
She immediately enrolled in the Mentoring Program and joined the Youth<br />
Leadership Council. She served as president <strong>of</strong> the group, the first girl to be<br />
elected to that position. In 2008, Jennifer was selected to attend Girls State, a<br />
youth leadership conference held annually in Sacramento, and in June <strong>of</strong> 2009,<br />
she graduated from high school with honors.<br />
