Course Description: Limits, continuity, differentiation and its applications, and the<br />
beginnings of integration.<br />
Prerequisites: Math 1 AND Math D, or Math 2 (or qualifying score on the placement test<br />
& proof of pre-calculus algebra and trigonometry)<br />
Textbook: "Single Variable <strong>Calculus</strong>-Early Transcendentals", Jon Rogawski, 1st Edition.<br />
Calculator: A graphing calculator is required for this class. I recommend the TI-84 Plus.<br />
Office Hours: I am available at these times to help you with your coursework, so please<br />
drop by or call whenever you have questions or want to talk to me about the class. No<br />
appointment is needed for these times; other times to meet can also be arranged.<br />

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADES<br />
1. There will be 3 exams, all on Thursdays, Feb. 17, Mar. 24 & May 5. If you miss an<br />
exam you must have a note (from a doctor, judge or employer) explaining your absence<br />
or you will receive 0% on that exam. Your makeup grade will be the average of your 2<br />
other exam scores.<br />
2. Homework will be collected and graded. The lowest two homework scores will be<br />
dropped. Late homework will be accepted with a 10% penalty each class day that it is<br />
late. HW can be redone to make up points you miss (see HW directions sheet for details).<br />
3. The cumulative final exam will be Monday, May 23, 11:50 am<strong>–</strong>1:50 pm.<br />
4. You will receive a free 6-week software license to use the online system ALEKS to<br />
review the pre-calculus algebra and trig that is required to do well in calculus. Your<br />
ALEKS assessment score will count toward your final course grade.<br />
5. Your course grade will be a weighted average of these components:<br />
GRADE SCALE:<br />
ALEKS: 5% A 90-100%<br />
Exams: 60% B 80-89%<br />
Homework: 15% C 70-79%<br />
Final Exam: 20% D 60-69%, F for less than 60%

Be sure to log into Angel early in the semester and regularly to check on your progress<br />
and to see course announcements, exam review problems, and handouts you might find<br />
helpful. You can also communicate with me through Angel email, if you wish.<br />
IF YOU NEED HELP: If you are having trouble with the course material, please come<br />
see me right away. I want all of my students to succeed and I will help in answering your<br />
questions on homework or exams. I can also direct you to study<strong>–</strong>skills professionals on<br />
campus for help with test preparation and math/testing anxiety and refer you to tutoring.<br />
The Math Resource Center (Room SM 5) and the Tutorial Center (beside the library) are<br />
staffed by a combination of faculty and student tutors, for free drop-in help. Free one-onone<br />
tutors are available with a referral. Listen in class for announcements of group<br />
tutoring sessions directly related to our course material.<br />
DROPPING THE COURSE: It is your responsibility to withdraw by notifying the<br />
Office of Admissions and Records. If you do not drop by the deadline, you may receive a<br />
failing grade in the course, even if you have stopped attending.<br />
Feb. 17 - Last day to drop with no grade Apr. 29 - Last day to drop with a W grade<br />
ATTENDANCE & BEHAVIOR: I expect you to come to class regularly, to arrive on<br />
time and to stay until class is dismissed. I expect you to behave like college students,<br />
which means you remain focused on coursework, participate actively in course-related<br />
discussions and group work, and show respect for others in your words and actions.<br />
CELL PHONES: Communication devices must be set to a silent mode during class. Do<br />
NOT use cell phones while you are in class, even as a calculator.<br />
CHEATING POLICY: Any student who is caught cheating will receive a 0% for that<br />
exam or assignment. Cheating includes, but is not limited to: using unauthorized notes,<br />
books or formulas during an exam, sharing calculators or otherwise sharing information,<br />
looking at another student’s exam or allowing another student to look at your exam, or<br />
copying homework solutions. Any student who is caught cheating repeatedly will receive<br />

SAFETY PROCEDURES: In the event of a safety emergency or drill, such as a fire<br />
alarm or earthquake, please listen for instructions from your instructor. Do not leave the<br />
campus until your attendance has been checked by your instructor. Do not return to the<br />
classroom until it is declared safe by authorized personnel.<br />
