In my view, then, the nature of the technology and its foreseeable appli­<br />

cations should be a key consideration in determining whether to pursue the<br />

startup route. This is not so much a consideration of the risk of a startup,<br />

but of whether a startup makes sense at all. In view of the enthusiasm for<br />

startups expressed by university administrators, political leaders, and the<br />

business press, it is important to keep in mind that they are simply not<br />

always appropriate commercialization vehicles.<br />
