Lake Hawdon’s Stud Aims and Achievements
The history of Shorthorn cattle at “Lake Hawdon” goes back to 1951, but it was not until 1974 when the growth of the current stud
herd began. There have been many sires bought in, notably Killiney Juggernaut and Marrington Quarterback, plus many of Lake
Hawdon’s own bulls used within the stud. Some of the more recent sires used have included The Grove Kookaburra, Bayview Geoff
V35, Royalla Exterminator, Broughton Park Victory B50, Yamburgan Coolabah and our newest and most exciting sire is Lake Hawdon
Don Bradman D11. All have been used with the intention of increasing the do-ability and thickness of our cattle, whilst maintaining good
length and frame size.
Lake Hawdon has shown Shorthorn cattle in Adelaide and Melbourne and on many occasions in the past has had many triumphs,
including Junior and Senior Champions. One particular cow that won Champion at multiple Royal Shows, as well as interbreed Champion,
and Junior Champion heifer was Lake Hawdon Approval M51, sired by Killiney Juggernaut.
Our bulls have also had successes over the years including three Grand Champions at Naracoorte with Manly in 1994, Zaccharias in
2006 and Esquire E60 in 2011. At Dubbo National Show and sale, Lake Hawdon bulls have been class winners, division champions
and broad ribbon place getters, plus several bulls at both sales have been sold for over $10,000. Bulls have been sold to every state
and territory in Australia ranging from areas such as Coober Pedy with a six inch rainfall to Victoria’s thirty inch rainfall, and Cooma in the
Snowy Mountains!
Females have been a big focus at Lake Hawdon, managing up to 700 stud and commercial females at one time in the past. We have
sold cattle to every eastern state, including Tasmania. Our commercial heifers have been highly sought after over the years and have been
offered at many sale venues, such as Hamilton and Naracoorte, as well as privately and in conjunction with other Shorthorn breeders.
These have travelled both interstate and locally and have been used with Shorthorns and in crossbreeding programs for vealer production.
Steers have been marketed to feedlots or slaughtered as MSA quality carcases, with our steers and clients achieving the MSA grid
specifications almost without fail, including some full semi loads grading 100%. They have also been entered into the Southern Grassfed
Carcase Classic competition for the last two years achieving two thirds last year and second in the pen of three in 2010. One of the
steers had an EMA of 115 cm2 and was top of his class and more than 30 cm2 above the average of the class. Many steers have also
been donated over the years to schools in the district to educate the children plus enable them to show in Adelaide or Mount Gambier.
Regular successes have been achieved, most recently the 2012 RAHS steer competition where the steer was given fourth in his class on
hoof, won best presented Shorthorn steer, was given third on hook out of all the Shorthorns, and was selected for the O’Connor team.
Breedplan has been used as one of our selection tools since the early
1990’s and we have submitted all measurable data possible including
birth weighing for over 10 years where close to 1000 calves have been
weighed!!!!!! We feel this is something to be proud of. Considerable gain
has been achieved in the past ten years with the herd EBV’s increasing
for 200 day weight by 8 kg, 400 day weight by 17 kg, 600 day weight by
15kg, milk up by 3kg, EMA up 2.3 cm2, cwt up by 18kg, yet birth weight
only increasing by .5 kg. These have resulted in a dollar figure for domestic
increase by $18, whilst the breed average has only increased by $10, and
the export index has exceeded the breed average by $5/head.
With this insight into Lake Hawdon Shorthorns with stud cattle that have
been selectively bred for almost forty years, we give you this opportunity
to include these productive and profitable genetics (which include some
new and exciting semen this year) into your herds.
Kind Regards,
Andy Kellock, Stud Manager
