The Stanford
Fund for
Undergraduate
Education
The Stanford Fund is the university’s annual
giving program that supports financial aid,
academic innovation, and student life initiatives
for undergraduates. This unrestricted, discretionary
fund enables the president to respond
to immediate needs, new opportunities, and
fresh ideas. Since annual gifts to The Stanford
Fund can be put to use as they come in, they are
an essential complement to gifts of endowment.
Gifts of all sizes add up to a substantial sum.
In fiscal year 2011–12, more than 33,000 donors
collectively gave over $22 million to The Stanford
Fund. It would take approximately $400 million in
endowment to generate that same level of funding
for undergraduate programs in a single year.
Participation in The Stanford Fund is also an
important indicator of alumni engagement—
a message to university leaders that they can
count on the alumni, just as the students and
faculty are counting on them. A commitment
to annual giving is an ongoing “vote of support”
for Stanford.

EACH YEAR, GIFTS TO THE STANFORD FUND ARE ALLOCATED TO TOP PRIORITIES IN UNDERgraduate
education. The fund’s flexibility enables the president to respond to changing
needs and new opportunities. In 2011–12, gifts were used to support undergraduate
financial aid, the academic experience, and student life groups.
Undergraduate Financial Aid ensures that students of the highest caliber are able to
attend the university, regardless of their financial circumstances. The Stanford Fund
plays a key role in filling the gap between scholarship endowment and the growing
need for financial aid.
The need for scholarship support has never been greater. Stanford’s financial aid
budget has more than doubled since 2005–06. More than 3,400 students—roughly
half of the undergraduate population—received need-based scholarships from
Stanford last year. More than a third of them received financial aid directly from
The Stanford Fund.
The Academic Experience is supported by The Stanford Fund’s direct investments in
the Schools of Humanities and Sciences, Engineering, and Earth Sciences. In 2011–12,
support from The Stanford Fund helped increase funding for academic directors—
full-time, professional advisors available to freshmen and sophomores in their
residence halls.
Stanford also welcomed a group of 35 students as the first participants in the new
Leland Scholars Program, a pre-orientation workshop for freshmen pursuing academic
paths in science, technology, engineering, math, or pre-medicine. Gifts to The
Stanford Fund provided seed funding for this pilot initiative of the Office of the Vice
Provost for Undergraduate Education.
Student Life has something for everyone, including the more than 140 student
groups, club sports teams, and public service programs that received funding from
The Stanford Fund last year. A core part of Stanford’s vibrant campus community,
student-run organizations provide valuable opportunities in leadership, team building,
and other skills that prove useful long after graduation.
FINANCIAL AID: DID YOU KNOW?
• Nearly half the undergraduate population receives need-
based aid directly from Stanford.
• More than 1,300 students received support from The
Stanford Fund last year.
• About 30% of undergraduates benefit from the zero-
tuition or zero-parent-contribution policies for families
with annual incomes under $100,000.
• 70% of Stanford’s financial aid budget is devoted to
scholarships for these students.
• All students are expected to help finance their education
by contributing at least $5,000 annually from earnings and
savings, or from outside scholarships, if available.
