Jenkins Peacock
(1798-1868).
Shag Rock.
Named Shag Rock as
early as 1854.
The Māori name for it
is Rapanui. The
meaning of this is
discussed in the Star in
In 1940 members of
the Sumner Beach
Improvement and
Beautifying
Association arranged
for the planting of 150
native shrubs
purchased from J. N.
Baxter of Mount
Pleasant.
Peacock was a
merchant and trader
who owned numerous
small vessels. He rode
to Christchurch via
Sumner and, according
to family legend, he
was afraid of rocks
falling from the cliffs
between Sumner and
