Power User of the Month
Kathy Blackley
Garff Enterprises
Our Power User for this month is
Kathy Blackley, MIS Director for
Garff Enterprises which consists
of 34 franchises at 18 locations in Utah. In
the last 4 years of her 16 years with Garff
Enterprises, she has been the software
specialist for Advent HPSS support.
(Her teammate, Mike Poulson, the
Network/System Administrator, is quite
helpful, too – but that’s another story.)
Kathy is so good at what she does that
we’ve nominated her a second time as
Power User! Lately she’s been learning
how to be even more self-sufficient by
taking on some of her more complex
accounting distributions. Our hats are off to
you, Kathy!
Advice for June Grads
In a speech to a crop of recent high
school graduates, some real world
advice was offered to a generation
raised on a feel-good, politically correct
curriculum:
Rule 1. Life is not fair – get used to it.
Rule 2. The world won’t care about your
self-esteem. The world will expect you to
accomplish something BEFORE you feel
good about yourself.
Rule 3. You will NOT make $40,000 a
year right out of high school, and you won’t
be a vice-president with a car phone until
you earn both.
Rule 4. If you think your teacher is
tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5. Flipping burgers is not beneath
your dignity. Your grandparents had a
different word for burger flipping – they
called it opportunity.
Rule 6. If you mess up, it’s not your
parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your
mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7. Before you were born, your
parents weren’t as boring as they are now.
They got that way from paying your bills,
cleaning your clothes and listening to you
talk about how cool you are. So before you
save the rainforest from the parasites of
your parents’ generation, try delousing the
closet in your own room.
Rule 8. Your school may have done
away with winners and losers, but life has
not. In some schools, they have abolished
failing grades and they’ll give you the test
as many times as you want to get the right
answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest
resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9. Life is not divided into
semesters. You don’t get summers off and
very few employers are interested in
helping you find yourself. Do that on your
own time.
Rule 10. Television is NOT real life. In
real life people actually have to leave the
coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11. Be nice to nerds. Chances are
you’ll end up working for one.
Not Adding Up?
When Weight Fees Don’t
Calculate Properly
If you ever find that your DMV
weight fees don’t calculate properly,
use the following checklist to
troubleshoot the problem:
1) In the manufacturer model screen,
for all models, “Type” should be set
properly for inventory types 2-5
(everything but cars).
2) The “Weight” field must have the
weight entered.
3) The “Wt fee” must = “Y”.
Finally, there’s one more thing to
look for and it applies mostly to used
vehicles:
4) Press ‘Additional Functions,’
then choose “4 Miscellaneous Info”
and be sure “Eligible for weight
fees” = “Y”. This last item will only
affect new vehicles if “Wt fee” is set
incorrectly (to “N”) for new vehicle
models.
Keep Traffic Moving
Don’t Stop those Reports!
Whenever a report is scheduled
to print using Advent’s Time
Scheduler, it is very important
that the printer on which the report is
scheduled to print be left on. In addition,
if this is not a stand-alone printer, the
computer that the printer is connected to
must be left on as well. The Advent
system will only spool the report for
printing when the computer/printer is
turned on.
So, if you are having trouble getting
your scheduled reports to print, first
check to see if the appropriate computer
and printer were left powered up at the
time the report was scheduled to print.
Who Done It?
Well of Course
T
hree engineering
students were
gathered together
discussing the possible
designers of the human body. One said,
“It was a mechanical engineer. Just look
at all the joints.”
Another said, “No, it was an
electrical engineer. The nervous system
has many thousands of electrical
connections.”
The last said, “Actually, it was a
civil engineer. Who else would run a
toxic waste pipeline through a
recreational area?”
