Here’s a sample career path from entry through senior<br />
level for an <strong>of</strong>ficer seeking to achieve advanced pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />
(level 4) in a very hard language such as Arabic:<br />
• Up to 44 weeks <strong>of</strong> basic Arabic at FSI/Washington (or<br />
FSI/Tunis for those who already have 2-level Arabic) after<br />
completing A-100 orientation and tradecraft training.<br />
• Consular or rotational assignment at an Arabic-speaking<br />
post.<br />
• Posting elsewhere in the world (or occasionally in<br />
Washington) to provide broader geographic and/or<br />
functional experience.<br />
• Ongoing language study via distance learning, post language<br />
programs or language immersion <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />
• Bid on an Arabic 3/3 assignment leading to 44 weeks <strong>of</strong><br />
training at the FSI field school in Tunis or another<br />
regional education institution.<br />
• More advanced language immersion training to the<br />
“Beyond 3” level may be considered for up to a year at<br />
appropriate institutions in the region, tied to an assignment<br />
to a language-designated position.<br />
