This variation is not often used <strong>in</strong> the actual competition. In answer<strong>in</strong>g to Red<br />
play of edge Elephant, Black is try<strong>in</strong>g to "make a breakthrough on the edged file".<br />
Black can also play R4+5 for tak<strong>in</strong>g a counter attack, or R1=3 for mak<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
breakthrough on the 3rd file. As there are too many examples <strong>in</strong> the actual<br />
competition, most of the players have already mastered the laws of offense and<br />
defense of this variation. So, it is quite natural for Mr.Xu not to use it.<br />
8. R2+5 ….<br />
The play of Chariot to the riverbank is typical method for extend<strong>in</strong>g the battle<br />
<strong>format</strong>ion of "double-head snake".<br />
8. … P1+1 9. P9+1 R1+4 10. H3+4 …<br />
Red drives Horse out, attempt<strong>in</strong>g for an attack. Another variation for Red which<br />
happened <strong>in</strong> the same round of the competition is A6=5, then C2=1; C8-1, R4=1;<br />
R9=6, C1+5; C8=9, C1=5; E3+5, RR=6; C9=7, Red forces an exchange of pieces by<br />
sacrific<strong>in</strong>g his Elephant. Despite that Red has lost one Elephant, he still has the<br />
<strong>in</strong>itiative as his two Chariots are occupy<strong>in</strong>g a better position and two Horses can<br />
move flexibly. If Red plays hastily with C8-1, then R4+6; R9=7, R1+2; H7+8, R4=5!<br />
E3+5, R1=5; A6+5, R5=2! Black would be <strong>in</strong> superior position after us<strong>in</strong>g one<br />
Chariot <strong>in</strong> exchang<strong>in</strong>g of two pieces and Red double Elephants.<br />
10. … C2=1 11. R2=6 R4=2<br />
Black plays Chariot sideward for p<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g down Red Cannon and other pieces on<br />
Red left flank. If he changes to R4=6, Red will play H4+3 (If he erred <strong>in</strong> play<strong>in</strong>g<br />
R6-1?, Black would play P3+1, Black would be <strong>in</strong> a superior position), Red is happy<br />
that Black has no follow-up measures.<br />
12. R6+1 R1-2<br />
Black retreats his Chariot for protect<strong>in</strong>g Pawn. With this move, Black can also<br />
launch an attack.<br />
13. R6-2 …<br />
Red vigilantly retreats his Chariot. If he changes to H4+6 or A6+5, Black can<br />
launch a counterattack with P3+1.<br />
13. … R1+1<br />
Black forces Red Chariot move to the riverbank. By play<strong>in</strong>g edged Chariot,<br />
Black can curb the attack of R4+6.<br />
