It Came Upon a Midnight Clear<br />
Hymns <strong>in</strong> the Circle<br />
1. It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old,<br />
from angels bend<strong>in</strong>g near the earth, to touch their harps of<br />
gold: “Peace on the earth, good <strong>will</strong> to men, from heaven’s all<br />
gracious K<strong>in</strong>g.” The world <strong>in</strong> solemn stillness lay to hear the<br />
angels s<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
2. Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful w<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
unfurled, and still their heavenly music floats o’er all the<br />
weary world; above its sad and lowly pla<strong>in</strong>s, they bend on<br />
hover<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>g, and ever o’er its Babel sounds the blessed<br />
angels s<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
What Child Is This?<br />
1. What child is this <strong>who</strong>, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleep<strong>in</strong>g?<br />
Whom angels greet with anthems <strong>sw</strong>eet, while <strong>shep</strong>herds<br />
watch are keep<strong>in</strong>g? This, this is Christ the K<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>who</strong>m<br />
<strong>shep</strong>herds guard and angels s<strong>in</strong>g; haste, haste to br<strong>in</strong>g him<br />
laud, the babe, the Son of Mary.<br />
3. So br<strong>in</strong>g him <strong>in</strong>cense, gold, and myrrh, come, peasant, k<strong>in</strong>g, to<br />
own him; the K<strong>in</strong>g of k<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
salvation br<strong>in</strong>gs, let lov<strong>in</strong>g hearts enthrone him. This, this is<br />
Christ the K<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>who</strong>m <strong>shep</strong>herds guard and angels s<strong>in</strong>g; haste,<br />

The First Noel<br />
1. The first Noel the angel did say was to certa<strong>in</strong> poor<br />
<strong>shep</strong>herds <strong>in</strong> fields as they lay; <strong>in</strong> fields where they lay<br />
keep<strong>in</strong>g their sheep, on a cold w<strong>in</strong>ter’s night that was so<br />

peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and s<strong>in</strong>ners reconciled!”<br />
Joyful, all ye nations rise, jo<strong>in</strong> the triumph of the skies; with<br />
th’angelic host proclaim, “Christ is <strong>born</strong> <strong>in</strong> Bethlehem!” Hark!<br />
