Harvesting clean, renewable, low-cost electricity
from gravity-fed water pipes
LucidPipe TM
Driven by the demand for reliable, cost-competitive electricity, local municipalities
and industrial water users deploy our in-conduit hydropower system, LucidPipe
Power System, to generate renewable electricity from water already flowing in
their pipes.
Depending on head pressure, flow and pipe diameter, each LucidPipe produces up
to 100 kW of renewable electricity by extracting excess head pressure from large
diameter (24”-96”), gravity-fed water pipes. Users can maximize their electricity
generation by installing multiple LucidPipe systems in a single pipeline.
With LucidPipe, large water users get more out of what they are already doing by
easily capturing the wasted energy in their current operation.
Generates Megawatts of Electricity
Lucid Energy installed its first commercial system in a municipal water supply
pipeline at Riverside Public Utilities (RPU) in Riverside, California in January
2012. The system is performing consistently, quietly and demonstrating an 80%
improvement in performance over the company’s 2011 pilot. Lucid’s pilot fed
more than 23 megawatt hours of renewable electricity to the grid, during 3500
hours of continuous operation at RPU.
Multiple LucidPipe projects are being firmed up in key target markets for
deployment beginning in late summer 2012. Lucid expects to produce and deploy
over 50 megawatts of electrical capacity, resulting in annual revenues of over $100
million by 2016.
Reduces Operating Costs
Water and energy are closely linked. LucidPipe turns a waste-stream into revenue
by harvesting otherwise wasted energy (in the form of excess head pressure in
moving water) and converts that energy into electricity. This electricity can be
returned to the user, or fed back to the grid to lower operating costs.
Lucid Energy is engaging with leading strategic corporate partners from the
energy and water infrastructure markets to accelerate market penetration. To see
Helps Offset Water Costs
Enormous amounts of energy are expended every day to treat and distribute
water. The use of LucidPipe helps to offset operating costs associated with water
by converting unused energy into electricity:
• Power represents 40%-50% of a water agency’s annual operating budget;
• 6% of U.S. energy consumption and 20% in California
goes to move water;
Power is purchased at great expense from a fossil-fuel dependent grid.
Value proposition
LucidPipe harvests clean, reliable
energy by extracting excess head
pressure in pipelines. It provides
baseload energy without the
intermittency of wind and solar,
virtually no impact on water flow,
and no environmental impact.
Navigant Consulting estimates
a U.S. market of $5-6 B, and
international market 3-4X the
U.S. Market. By 2016, expect to
produce and deploy turbines to
generate over 50 million MWH,
for annual revenues in excess of
$100 M by 2016.
Patented Technology
Lucid’s first LucidPipe patent was developed with Northwest
Pipe Company, the largest manufacturer of steel water
transmission pipe in the U.S. The patent was issued by the
USPTO in May 2011 and was also filed internationally to
ensure protection in target markets. Lucid is applying for
new patents for recent innovations.
Immediate LucidPipe Prospects
in the U.S. and Worldwide
Lucid Energy is targeting in-conduit hydropower projects
in the most densely populated areas of the U.S. where the
market is estimated to be thousands of turbines, or billions
of dollars. Worldwide, the market is estimated to be 3-4
times larger than the U.S.
LucidPipes Needed In Miles of Pipelines
The EPA states that $650 billion in water infrastructure
upgrades are needed to replace aging pipelines and to
satisfy new demand over the next 20 years. Incorporating
LucidPipe systems into the miles of pipeline slated for
rehabilitation or new construction will create the capacity
for hundreds of megawatts of renewable electricity from
otherwise wasted water.
Entrepreneurial and Engineering Team
