STROKE COUNT SURVEY
A survey presented to 20 students and 30 native Japanese showed that of the 13
"Kyouiku" kanji presented, students managed to give the correct stroke count 5% of the
time, while native Japanese gave the correct stroke count 70% of the time. The mean
error rate for Japanese was found to be + 1. 7 strokes, whereas students' mean error rate
was 1 5.3 strokes. These results indicate that the concept of "stroke count" is a very
dubious key for locating kanji or radicals.
