and Maggie’s children and they had one child (Helen
Elizabeth Muckleroy Smith, b. 25 June 1919; d.
25 August 2001 112 ) of their own, but the marriage
eventually was dissolved in later life. Bob died at age
sixty-eight on 26 January 1958 in Alice, Jim Wells
County, Texas. 113 Bessie died at age eighty-five on 29
March 1970 in Houston, Harris County, Texas. 114

6. Susan “Susie” Kate Baugh was born on 1 January
1874 in Logan County, Kentucky. 122 Susie married
Martin Samuel Hines on 24 May 1899 in Cleburne,
Johnson County, Texas. 123 Figure 12 shows their
wedding photo, which was also taken at Bennett’s
Studio. This photo, owned by Robert Myrle Hines,
was passed down from his father, John Samuel Hines,
and his grandmother, Susie (Baugh) Hines. Martin
Samuel was born on 25 March 1863 in Boone
County, Missouri. 124 Rochelle Hines recalled the
following family history, as told to her by her father,
Merritt Hines:
In 1880, when Martin Hines lived with
his parents in Johnson County, Texas, his
father’s occupation was stock farmer/
nurseryman. Martin’s son, Merritt,
remembered that his Dad also bought and
sold trees just like his grandfather had done.
Merritt stated, ‘My Dad once said that he
had sold most of the Chinese Elm trees
in Midland County, Texas, to the farmers
and ranchers who lived there.’ In 1903,
Martin Samuel Hines moved the family
from Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas, to
Snyder, Scurry County, Texas in a covered
wagon. Merritt, who was about 1 ½ years
old, traveled in a basket. While going through
Palo Pinto County, Susie later told her family,
the wagon ruts were so deep from recent rains
that she was afraid the wagon would turn
over, and she said that even if she could go
back home, she would be too afraid of the
trip to go back. In 1905, they moved from
Snyder to northwest Andrews County, Texas.
In 1907, they moved to Midland County,
Texas, so, as Martin said, ‘the boys could go
to school.’
Susie’s oldest grandson, Robert Myrle Hines,
shared the following memories of his Grandmother
Hines: “I remember Grandma Hines always loved to
