Dr. Carilli previously served as the<br />

dean of students at the <strong>University</strong> of<br />

Tennessee, responsible for the management<br />

of 11 departments concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

many facets of student life. He began his<br />

service at the <strong>University</strong> of Tennessee <strong>in</strong><br />

1998 as the associate dean of students.<br />

He became the dean of students <strong>in</strong> 2000.<br />

Among the <strong>University</strong>’s <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

graduate students is Leila Nabiyeva,<br />

Azerbaijan. She is the 11th student from<br />

four former Soviet Union republics to<br />

study bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s MBA<br />

program, supported through the Edmund<br />

S. Muskie/Freedom Support Graduate<br />

Fellowship Program, which was established<br />

10 years ago to encourage economic<br />

growth <strong>in</strong> 15 republics that formerly<br />

made up the Soviet Union.<br />

Just over 500 Muskie Fe l l ows will study<br />

<strong>in</strong> the United States this ye a r, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

t h ree at the Un i ve r s i t y.<br />

In order for an <strong>in</strong>stitution to be able to<br />

e n roll Muskie Fe l l ows, the academic programs<br />

<strong>in</strong> the students’ areas of specialization<br />

must have the highest accre d i t a t i o n .<br />

The MBA program at the Un i ve r s i t y’s<br />

Kania School of Management is accre d i t e d<br />

by the rigorous standards of AAC S B -<br />

International, the Association to Ad va n c e<br />

Muskie Fe l l owships are based on academic<br />

Upon completion of the fellow s h i p,<br />

students will return to their home countries<br />

for at least two years to apply what they<br />

h a ve learned.<br />

From 1995 to 1998, Dr. Carilli served<br />

as the assistant director of student development<br />

at Southern Ill<strong>in</strong>ois <strong>University</strong> at<br />

Carbondale.<br />

He was awarded the Adm<strong>in</strong>istrator of<br />

the Year Award at the <strong>University</strong> of<br />

Tennessee this year and the Outstand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Student Affairs Staff Member Award at<br />

Southern Ill<strong>in</strong>ois <strong>University</strong> at<br />

Carbondale <strong>in</strong> 1997.<br />

A native of New York City, Dr. Carilli<br />

earned his bachelor’s degree <strong>in</strong> secondary<br />

education from East Stroudsburg<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1988. He earned a master’s<br />

degree <strong>in</strong> student affairs <strong>in</strong> higher education<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istration from Kutztown State<br />

<strong>University</strong> and a doctorate <strong>in</strong> higher education<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istration from Southern<br />

Ill<strong>in</strong>ois <strong>University</strong> at Carbondale.<br />

He is a member of the American College<br />

Personnel Association, the National Association<br />

of Student Personnel Ad m i n i s t r a t o r s<br />

and the National Education Association.<br />

Renowned Economist to Speak at Scranton<br />

One of the lead<strong>in</strong>g economists <strong>in</strong> the<br />

United States, Robert J. Shiller, Ph.D.,<br />

will present the <strong>University</strong>’s 16th annual<br />

Henry George Lecture. He will discuss<br />

“Progress, Poverty and the Digital Age” on<br />

13 September at 7:30 p.m. <strong>in</strong> Eagen<br />

Auditorium of the Gunster Memorial<br />

Student Center.<br />

Dr. Shiller will also speak to area bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

leaders at the Un i ve r s i t y’s Pre s i d e n t’s<br />

Breakfast at 8 a.m. <strong>in</strong> the Exe c u t i ve Center,<br />

fifth floor, Brennan Hall. He will pre s e n t<br />

Liturgical Musicians’ Reunion to<br />

be held 29 - 30 September<br />

A major event is be<strong>in</strong>g planned for alumni who have participated as liturgical musicians<br />

at the <strong>University</strong>. A reunion will be held 29 - 30 September to mark the 25th<br />

anniversary of the <strong>University</strong>’s Campus Music M<strong>in</strong>istry.<br />

Over 200 Music M<strong>in</strong>istry alumni are expected to gather for the event, which will<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude a barbecue, a brunch, and, of course, a liturgy. The liturgical celebration will be<br />

held <strong>in</strong> the Houlihan-McLean Center, the music for which will be conducted by present<br />

and past directors of liturgical music: William Mulligan, Richard Shaw, Kathy<br />

Kanavy and Sister Joan Roccasalvo.<br />

Dr. Shiller thoroughly exam<strong>in</strong>es the enthusiasm<br />

driv<strong>in</strong>g the stock market highs,<br />

endors<strong>in</strong>g what Alan Greenspan termed as<br />

the mark e t’s “irrational exuberance.” Dr.<br />

Shiller believes the mark e t’s high is more<br />

re p re s e n t a t i ve of the optimism of millions<br />

encouraged by Wall St reet analysts rather<br />

than the realistic judgements of rational<br />

e x p e rts. His book became a New Yo rk Ti m e s<br />

non-fiction best seller, forewarn<strong>in</strong>g of the<br />

potential for poorer market perf o r m a n c e<br />

and offer<strong>in</strong>g alternative <strong>in</strong>vestment options.<br />

“A superb macroeconomist, Dr. Shiller<br />

has done pioneer<strong>in</strong>g work <strong>in</strong> the areas of<br />

stock market volatility and market psychology,<br />

An expert <strong>in</strong> market fluctuations, Dr.<br />

Shiller is the Stanley B. Resor Professor of<br />

Economics and a faculty re s e a rcher for the<br />

C owles Foundation for Re s e a rch <strong>in</strong><br />

Economics at Yale Un i ve r s i t y.<br />

Dr. Shiller has written extensively on<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial markets, behavioral economics,<br />

macroeconomics, real estate and statistical<br />

methods, as well as on public attitudes,<br />

op<strong>in</strong>ions and moral judgements regard<strong>in</strong>g<br />

markets. He is a research associate of the<br />

National Bureau of Economic Research, a<br />

fellow of the American Academy of Arts<br />

and Sciences and a member of the<br />

Academic Advisory Panel for the Federal<br />

Reserve Bank of New York.<br />

The He n ry George Lecture Series is the<br />

p re-em<strong>in</strong>ent public lecture series <strong>in</strong> economics<br />
