patients in 2005. Yet Vermont patients were young when compared to treatment admissions<br />

nationwide. For 2003 (the latest year for which data are available), 69 percent <strong>of</strong> the TEDS<br />

heroin patients across the U.S. <strong>and</strong> 58 percent <strong>of</strong> the other opiate patients were over age 30.<br />

Although the Vermont patients were much younger than their counterparts elsewhere in the<br />

country, the patients in the other opiate category in Vermont were older than the patients being<br />

treated for heroin at the time they began using their primary drug <strong>of</strong> abuse (Exhibit 23). They<br />

also were older at the time <strong>of</strong> admission to treatment, were more likely to be employed full-time,<br />
