THINGS TO REMEMBER Congratulations Seniors You are almost there! Keep an eye out for important postings Stay on top of deadlines and requirements Make sure to keep your grades up and finish out your senior year in good standing Be responsible for YOUR future - YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR USING THE INFORMATION PROVIDED TO YOU AND MEETING DEADLINES If your are going to college next fall Have an idea where you want to go –plan visits and/or interviews Find out the requirements of the college Know when the college admission deadlines are and have everything required completed on time Start early on essays for admission to allow time for revisions Type applications or print neatly using black or blue-black ink pen Recommendations/References from Counselor or Teachers Recommendations/references may be needed for colleges or scholarships Make sure to request a recommendation/reference at least 3 weeks before you need it Give counselor or teacher a resume about you and your experience Provide an addressed and stamped envelope along with the appropriate forms Scholarship information can be found Flyers though the school School TV announcements D-B website on the Counseling page Go For It newsletter-may be picked up in the Counseling Office or Library Smoke Signals school newsletter Scholarship box in the Counseling Office FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Critical to do for financial aid and for lottery scholarships Forms are not available until after January 1 st Parents need to provide financial/tax information Try to submit by February 14, 2009 Get your FAFSA pin number this fall at www.pin.ed.gov After January 1 st , apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov HOPE Lottery Scholarship $4,000 for 4 year accredited Tennessee college/university $2,000 for 2 year accredited Tennessee college (ex. Northeast State or Walters State) 3.0 GPA or 21 ACT or 980 (math and verbal) SAT The GPA used for the HOPE is your unweighted GPA
Things to remember about ACT/SAT test scores Make sure to take the ACT or SAT this year if you haven’t already taken it-plan to take it 6 to 8 weeks before you must submit the scores Packets for the ACT/SAT tests are available in the Counseling Office or register online at ACT(www.act.org) or SAT(www.collegeboard.com) Seniors who have not already taken the ACT may get a voucher for the ACT If your are qualified for financial assistance then you may be able to receive a fee waiver for the Act and SAT Make sure to take what YOUR college wants Don’t keep repeating tests over and over – take what you need TN/VA Scholars 4 English courses 4 Math courses (with at least 1 math higher than Algebra II) 3 Sciences courses (Biology I, Chemistry I, + 1 higher science) 3 Social Studies (same social studies required for graduation on any path at D-B) 1 Wellness course 1 Fine Arts 2 Foreign Language courses in the same language 2 Career Technical Education courses (one of which must be computer-related) OR 2 AP courses (these can’t be from your core required courses) OR 2 Dual Enrollment courses (JumpStart English does not count) 20 hours of community service (forms due in Counseling Office December 12) Grade of “C” or higher in all TN/VA Scholars courses 95% attendance (over the course of 4 years) NO out of school suspensions Successful passing of all Gateway Exams or state graduation criteria NCAA Eligibility Starting August 1, 2008, 16 core courses will be required for NCAA Division I schools. Division II schools have a 14 core course rule. High school athletes should register with the NCAA Clearinghouse by the end of their junior year or beginning of their senior year. Apply online at www.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/common – print the transcript release form, sign and bring to the Counseling Office – your transcript must be attached to release form before mailing to NCAA Eligibility Center. All SAT and ACT scores must be reported directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center by the testing agency. Test scores that appear on transcripts will not be used. When registering for the SAT or ACT, use the Eligibility Center code 9999 to make sure the score is reported. Make sure to plan this with your parents, coach and counselor. Check your transcript to make sure you have the correct number of core classes that count. Northeast State Technical Community College (NESTCC) – Educate and Grow Scholarship 2 year scholarship at NESTCC Variable award, pays majority of tuition Must have a 19 or higher on all subscores of the ACT Priority deadline date is March 1 st Four step process – application for admissions, general foundation scholarship form, FAFSA, and “Educate and Grow” scholarship form. Failure to complete all 4 steps will result in being declined for the scholarship.
