FINANCIAL AID FOR COLLEGE
Most student aid is awarded on the basis of financial need. Need is the difference
between your cost of education (educational expenses such as tuition, fees, room, board,
books, supplies and other) and the amount you and your family are expected to contribute to
your education. A standard formula used for all applicants determines this amount. The
formula is called the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). If there is any remaining balance
after subtracting the EFC from your cost of education, you are considered to have financial
need. The information you submit on the FAFSA application is used to determine the Expected
family Contribution. This process is called need analysis.
You may apply for financial aid as soon as your annual income tax information is
available. This should be done as early in January as possible. To apply for financial aid you
must complete the FAFSA. For 2009-2010 there will be no paper copies in the Counseling
Office – only the worksheets. Students will be able to obtain a paper FAFSA by calling the
Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 or by visiting www.edpubs.org .
Students may request up to three copies of the paper application and should receive their
FAFSA’s in 3 – 7 business days.
We continue to encourage student to use the online method for filing the application.
The FAFSA on the Web Worksheet , the most effective tool students can use to facilitate the
online application process, will be in the Counseling Office by December 1. In addition, Federal
Student Aid has several promotional publications that list application resources, explain how
students can file the FAFSA, and provide tips for completing the application.
APPLY ONLINE AT: www.fafsa.ed.gov . Remember that you cannot apply before
January 1, 2010.
TENNESSEE STUDENT ASSISTANCE CORPORATION
The priority application deadline for completing the FAFSA for consideration for the Tennessee
Student Assistance Award has been changed for the 2010-2011 academic year from March 1 to
FEBRUARY 15.
The financial assistance applications for Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, Ned McWherter Scholars,
and Minority Teaching Fellows no longer require the high school counselor’s signature and can
be completed online. The student is still required to forward the required attachments and now
